Martavis Bryant’s 4 Game Suspension Will Stand

The NFL will not be reducing Martavis Bryant’s 4 game suspension. The league announced today that his appeal has been denied.

News broke of Bryant’s 4 game suspension last week. The 2nd year receiver was suspended after reportedly testing positive for marijuana multiple times. Kevin Colbert made a statement regarding his suspension today.

“We are disappointed in Martavis’ actions that has led to his four game suspension. It is a disappointment to our entire organization as well as our fans, but we will continue to support Martavis during his suspension.

“It is very unfortunate his actions have put our team in this situation to begin the year, but we are confident he will learn from his mistake and return in excellent shape in week 5.”

Report: Steelers Trading With Jaguars For K Josh Scobee

The Steelers are finalizing a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for veteran kicker Josh Scobee according to multiple media outlets.

https://twitter.com/rayfitt1/status/638359917821337600

Scobee has been with the Jaguars since 2004. He’s a very solid veteran kicker. After losing Shaun Suisham to a season ending knee injury, and Garrett Hartley to what was likely a season ending hamstring injury, the team is in need of a healthy, reliable veteran at the position. There is no word yet on what the trade compensation will be from the Steelers, but I can’t imagine it will be much more than a 7th next year. The team already gave their (conditional) 5th (so probably a 4th) to Philadelphia for Boykin.

Scobee is no stranger to Heinz field. He is 5 of 6 at Heinz including the game winner in the 2007 playoff game. He had a bit of a down year last year, and was 3 for 6 on field goals from 50+, 17 for 20 from inside 49, and 20 for 26 overall (76.9 pct.). Josh Scobee is 61.9% from 50 + for his career. Shaun Suisham- 31.3%.

Unless his deal is being reworked, which it may likely be, Scobee currently carries a $3.425 Mil cap hit that the Steelers will be responsible for.

‘Walking Dead’ Steelers Defense Stuggles In 43-19 Loss To Buffalo

The Steelers lost to the Bills 43-19. The team has lost by such a margin in a preseason game since 1992. For much of the game, the defense was hard to watch. Granted, the Bills had their first teamers in at times when the Steelers had 3rd string guys in. Aside from that though, it was just pretty darn ugly.

When it was all said and done, Buffalo’s QB’s were a combined 30 for 33, totaling 395 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions.. It wasn’t just pass coverage that struggled. On the Bills opening play, the Steelers defense allowed 34 year old Fred Jackson to break free for a 41 yard run. He’d run it again on the next two downs to score. QB Tyrod Taylor also scored one with his legs.

After the game, Coach Tomlin said some of the young players looked like they were “walking dead”.

“Some of our young guys who pushed through this game- who are quite frankly fighting for jobs, did not execute with enough detail to be in consideration,” said Coach Tomlin. “That’s disappointing. As we push towards the end of this thing, I’d like to see guys with their arrows pointed up, fighting for jobs. Some of those guys looked like they were just walking dead. We’ve got to analyze that, and keep those committed to fighting. Some of that stuff was quite disturbing; not the type of performance we’re looking for.”

It wasn’t all bad, though. WR Martavis Bryant looked like a stud. It made the news of his suspension that much harder to stomach. RB DeAngelo Williams looked sharp yesterday. Newly signed QB Michael Vick looked pretty impressive in his debut as a Steeler.

His first play under center, Vick threw a deep pass to Martavis Bryant that resulted in a 63 yard gain. The pass was over 45 yards in the air and Vick looked like he was hardly trying. Obviously he’s still got the arm strength. Other times Vick struggled with communication, and looked frustrated as he had to burn 2 timeouts in 4 plays. That’s par for the course for a newly signed QB.

Jordan Berry most likely sealed a spot on the roster last night. He showed off his leg strength, finishing the night with a booming 78 yard punt.

The deadline for trimming the 90 man roster down to 75 is Tuesday at 4:00 pm. It’s likely the team will start making cuts before then.

Michael Vick Will Get Some Playing Time Today

Earlier in the week, Coach Tomlin said that the team hadn’t made a determination as to whether or not newly signed QB Mike Vick would play in Buffalo. According to Bob Labriola, the team has decided to give Vick some reps today at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Ben Roethlisberger is expected to play the entire first half today, so it will be interesting to see how much playing time Vick gets. Will we see the final two quarters evenly split between Vick and Landry Jones? The team takes the field at 4:00.

[Audio] Tomlin Press Conference Talking Bills Game

Coach Tomlin spoke for almost 20 minutes today during his press conference talking about the upcoming preseason game in Buffalo. Tomlin said that the starters will play in a similar fashion to last week’s participation, and added that all healthy veterans might play.

DE Stephon Tuitt was the only player Tomlin specifically ruled out, and said that they’d leave the light on for CB Cortez Allen, LB Lawrence Timmons, and S Mike Mitchell. (Mitchell hurt his ankle in practice yesterday.)

Regarding quarterback play, coach said that there wasn’t a determination on whether or not Vick would play Saturday, and that they’d decide over the next couple days. Tyler Murphy won’t likely get any snaps at QB this weekend, but probably will next week. You can listen to the full press conference below.

Report: Martavis Bryant Facing 4 Game Suspension

According to Adam Schefter, Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is facing a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He will appeal the suspension.

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/636971474423689216

https://twitter.com/BCTBradford/status/636979102524833792

In 10 games last season Bryant caught 26 passes gaining 549 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2014, he averaged 21.1 yards per catch. The Steelers planned to utilize the ’14 4th round pick a lot more this season. The team is already starting the season without Le’Veon Bell and Maurkice Pouncey. Bell and Bryant accounted for 19 of the team’s touchdowns last season.

To draw a four game suspension, a player would have to fail 3 drug tests, or, have failed two tests and been deemed to not be following the corrective measures set forth by the league under the substance abuse policy.

[Video] Michael Vick Speaks To Local Media

Newly signed quarterback Michael Vick has undoubtedly taken over your timeline, message board discussion, Twitter feed and whatever else over the past 24 hours. It was no different for the Steelers locker room today when reporters swarmed to get a chance to speak with Vick.

The veteran quarterback spoke with the gaggle of media for about 13 minutes this afternoon answering questions about becoming a Steeler, how he sleeps at night, his thoughts on the offense, and answered several questions on a variety of topics.

Some quick hitters from the interview-

He said Tomlin and he go way back. Called coach Tomlin a phenomenal man and said he always went to his football camps.

Called it an honor to sit back and watch future hall of famer Ben Roethlisberger work.

Vick said Landry Jones has been helping him all morning with the playbook. Jones is his neighbor in the locker room. The other side is Ramon Foster.

Vick says everybody’s different when they’re 20 compared to 35, and he wants people to look at the right he’s trying to do. He also said he realizes that some people still feel a certain way about what happened, but he just tries to stay positive and keep building on what he’s built for the past five years. You can watch most of the interview below in 2 segments.

Michael Vick Will Wear Number 2

Unless you’ve been on a wilderness retreat, you probably heard that the Steelers signed Michael Vick yesterday. Vick has worn #7 throughout his career, but obviously that number is taken in Pittsburgh. The Steelers announced this morning that the veteran quarterback will wear #2.

Steelers Sign Michael Vick

The Steelers have signed Michael Vick. Vick was in for a visit that lasted a few hours today, and ultimately, signed to a 1 year contract.

https://twitter.com/dlolleyor/status/636319925112557568

Vick is coming off one of his worst years statistically with the NY Jets. There were reports last summer that indicated Jets ownership wasn’t happy with Vick’s effort to compete for the starting job. Vick is 35, and hasn’t played like the Michael Vick of old in a few years. His former coach Rex Ryan was tempted to bring him in recently as their QB situation isn’t very good, but said he thought better of it.

“Our conditions are a little different than most teams,” said Ryan. “And Mike will tell you, he’s not built really for a bad weather quarterback. He doesn’t have great big hands, and the weather affects him some. And he’d be the first one to tell you.”

Fact of the matter is that there really aren’t a lot of options right now in free agency, and the Steelers aren’t comfortable enough with Landry Jones to ride with him and hope for a backup to become available down the road.
