Accuser’s Lawyer Believes Maurkice Pouncey Will Be Charged With Battery

The lawyer for the three people who filed a civil suit against Maurkice Pouncey a couple weeks ago says that police have indicated to him that charges will be pressed against Maurkice Pouncey.

Personal injury attorney Marwan Porter says that he was briefed by the Miami Police about their intentions. Their lawyer also says that Maurkice will be the only one charged, and that charges could come as soon as tomorrow. Pouncey’s attorney doesn’t believe that could happen.  Attorney Jeff Ostrow told the Miami Herald that as far as he knew, an assistant state attorney hadn’t been assigned to review the evidence yet.

“Until such time, no charges can be formally filed against either of my clients,” Ostrow added. “From what we’ve discovered, the evidence supporting the battery claims is flimsy, at best.”

According to Ostrow, the defense has “many witnesses who are prepared to testify under sworn oath that neither Maurkice nor Mike had anything to do with the incident. Consequently, after the state reviews all the evidence, I find it highly unlikely that formal charges will be filed against either of the Pouncey brothers.”

While the Miami Police department wouldn’t say if charges would indeed be filed, multiple people close to the situation believe charges will be pressed according to the Herald. If he is in fact charged with the misdemeanor, he would not have to rush down to Florida to stand for the charges, but it certainly would complicate the civil suit, regardless of the outcome of the criminal charges.

Defense attorneys often like to get their cases in the newspaper, so this might just be another grab for publicity. Time will tell if there’s any truth to this report.

Jarvis Jones Returns To Practice And Other Participation Notes

Today is the last practice before the Steelers take the field in Metlife Stadium on Saturday. Out of the men who were questionable according to coach Tomlin earlier, OLB Jarvis Jones was back at practice today. Jones has been nursing a groin injury.

LB Ryan Shazier was still sidelined today which shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s impossible to say whether his knee is truly just a “boo boo” as Mike Tomlin says, or if it’s not something more serious. NT Steve McLendon is still out with a concussion and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was out as he recovers from a concussion as well.

WR Antonio Brown and S Troy Polamalu were given the day off. DE Cameron Heyward was also out today, presumably as a maintenance day as well. Lastly, OG Ramon Foster didn’t practice again today. While no specifics have been given about his absence, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was related to his finger. The lineman had an issue with it the other day in practice.

The Steelers are off tomorrow, and as Tomlin said earlier, those who are healthy will play. The availability of the questionable players will be an 11th hour decision according to Tomlin.

Mike Tomlin

Shazier, Zumwalt, Jarvis Jones And Others Unlikely To Play Saturday

The Steelers have a number of players who are nursing some type of minor injury or another. During coach Tomlin’s press conference this afternoon, he somewhat cryptically addressed the injuries and who would play.

“Everyone who’s healthy will participate in the football game. We have a number of guys who aren’t healthy right now, but we’re going to leave the light on for those guys. We’re going to wait until the 11th hour before making decisions whether to play some of them. But our goal is to get full participation to get those guys off to a good start and show what they’re capable of and move forward with the developmental process of our team.”

The players who are considered questionable for Saturday are:

LB Ryan Shazier (knee boo-boo)
NT Steve McLendon (concussion)
LB Jordan Zumwalt (groin)
LB Jarvis Jones (groin)
TE Rob Blanchflower (ankle)
WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion)

If history is any indicator, the first string players who are active Saturday will likely only see 10-15 snaps. With Shazier out, this will mean Vince Williams will get the start, and we’ll get an extended look at Sean Spence. The 2nd stringers are usually in for somewhere between 20-30 plays depending on the flow of the game, depth at the position, and Tomlin’s mood. LB Howard Jones and DE Josh Mauro are a couple other guys who should see additional playing time against the Giants.

Coach Tomlin added that the team will continue to monitor the players who are recovering from injury. “Some of those guys have participated (in practice) in some form or fashion, partially in some instances,” said Tomlin. “We’ll just continue to monitor some of those guys. Our intention is to play those guys if it’s at all possible, but we’ll wait until the last minute to make those judgments.”

Heyward-Bey Returns To Practice, Shazier Still Out

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has returned to practice today for the first time since sustaining a concussion on July 31st.  LB Ryan Shazier is still sidelined with his knee “boo boo” as Tomlin called it.

OG Ramon Foster and WR Lance Moore are getting maintenance days today. NT Steve McLendon is still out with his concussion and LB Jarvis Jones is out again due to his groin injury. Hopefully Coach Tomlin will shed more light on a couple absences later today.

Report: Steve McLendon Has A Concussion

Steve McLendon has missed the last three practices with no explanation given by the coaching staff. Turns out, according to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, the veteran nose tackle is recovering from a concussion.

McLendon spoke with reporters earlier today about his absence at practice. “I’m OK. It’s Coach Tomlin’s call. It’s up to him. It’s his call,” said McLendon. With McLendon out, Cam Thomas has gotten reps as the first team NT and Stephon Tuitt has gotten lots of looks at first team defensive end.

There has been a wide range of speculations regarding McLendon’s absence. Groins and hamstrings being the most obvious guesses, with “Tomlin’s doghouse” being a distant 3rd. Steve isn’t the only player missing time from a concussion. Darrius Heyward-Bey is still out from his concussion, which he suffered July 31st. According to Heyward-Bey, his symptoms are different from McLendon’s. DHB says this is the 5th concussion of his career.

Concussions effect people differently. One person might recover quickly, while another may need much more time to return to 100%. From here it’s anyone’s guess when either of the two might return.

James Shaw

Steelers Sign WR James Shaw, Waive WR Danny Coale

The Steelers have signed former Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Power wide receiver James Shaw. WR Danny Coale has been waived/injured.

Coale was Tunch Ilkin’s son in law. There is no word on the nature of his injury. According to Bob Labriola, Coale had a displaced fracture in one of his fingers which required surgery. Essentially, a displaced fracture is a fracture that changes the alignment or rotation of the bone(s). Coale was originally drafted by the Cowboys in the 5th round of the 2012 draft. He’ll most likely clear waivers and go the injured reserve list until the team reaches an injury settlement with him.

James Shaw is 5’11”, 195 lbs. He was signed by the Carolina Panthers as an UDFA last year and was with them through training camp. He played 15 snaps against the Steelers in preseason last summer, and had a few catches. He was signed to the Panthers practice squad after the season began, but was released shortly after.

Shaw played in 8 games for Pittsburgh’s AFL franchise this year. He had 21 receptions for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns. Shaw also saw time as a kick returner averaging 19.7 yards per return. Here’s a couple recent practice videos highlighting Shaw’s route running and pass catching abilities. He’s wearing #17.

Breaking Down Shaun Suisham’s Contract Extension

The Steelers extended kicker Shaun Suisham last week. The contract details were not available when the extension was announced, but I can provide them for you now.

Suisham’s new deal contains $12.575 million in new money, and includes a $2.85 million guaranteed signing bonus. Suisham can also earn a $500,000 roster bonus in 2015. The deal should make Suisham the 10th highest paid kicker. Here is a breakdown of the contract by year.
Year, Base Salary, Prorated Bonus, Roster Bonus, Cap Hit, Dead Money

2014, “$855,000″,”$907,500″,”$0″,”$1,762,500”, “$3,187,500”

2015, “$2,595,000″,”$570,000″,”$500,000″,”$3.665,000”, “$2,280,000”

2016, “2,400,000”,”$570,000″,”$0″,”$2,970,000″, “$1,710,000”

2017, “$2,400,000″,”$570,000″,”$0″,”$2,970,000”, “$1,140,000”

2018, “2,400,000”,”$570,000″,”$0″,”$2,970,000″, “$570,000”
You may or may not agree, but the contract is a little on the high side. As you can see though, the team can move on from Suisham before the end of the contract without too much of a negative cap impact, should they feel the need to do so.

Shazier Out, Zumwalt Returns, And Other Practice Participation Notes

The news on the injury front was mostly positive in Latrobe today. The Steelers got some guys back who have been out for a while. Mike Mitchell was activated from the PUP list, and LB Jordan Zumwalt returned for the first time since injuring his groin a week ago.

TE Rob Blanchflower also returned to practice today. The rookie tight end had suffered a high ankle sprain last week. I’m surprised he’s back so soon; that’s great news for him. LB Ryan Shazier was held out today for the knee injury he sustained yesterday. Hopefully that “little boo-boo”, as Tomlin put it yesterday, doesn’t keep him out for too long.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was out again today as he recovers from his concussion. C Maurkice Pouncey and CB Ike Taylor were both given maintenance days by Mike Tomlin. This is very unusual for Ike Taylor.

LB Jarvis Jones was out again today due to a groin injury. NT Steve McLendon was out for the third straight day. No specifics have been released about why McLendon has been out, but one reliable reporter said he had an illness.

Steelers Activate Mike Mitchell From PUP

Safety Mike Mitchell passed his physical and has been activated from the Active/PUP list today. Mitchell will do an AM walk through and is expected to be in full pads for practice this afternoon.

Mitchell started camp on the Active/PUP list with a groin injury he suffered while training. He had been steadily improving, and the announcement of his return was expected any day.

With Mitchell’s return, Robert Golden and Shamarko Thomas will see time on the back up squads, as Mitchell will step in on first team.

Shazier Gets A “Little Boo Boo” And Other Injury Notes

Steelers rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier got a little banged up during a red zone drill today. After a big hit on Le’Veon Bell, Shazier limped off the field where trainers attended to him, and wrapped his right knee in ice. Afterward, Shazier was standing and walking on the sideline, and didn’t go to the lockers.

After practice, Coach Tomlin told reporters that there were no significant injuries today- just bumps and bruises. When asked about Ryan Shazier, Mike Tomlin said he got “a little boo-boo”. Apparently Tomlin isn’t concerned about it.

For the defense, Troy Polamalu, Steve McLendon, Jordan Zumwalt, and Hebron Fangupo were in shorts and didn’t participate. Mike Mitchell of course is still out on the PUP list.

On offense, Ben Roethlisberger and Rob Blanchflower were out for today’s activities. According to Tomlin, there is no update on punter Adam Podlesh.
