Maurkice Pouncey Reportedly Needs Another Ankle Surgery

Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey reportedly has had a setback on his road to recovery and will require another ankle surgery. Due to complications from an earlier surgery, the veteran center will apparently require follow-up surgery.

Pouncey had surgery in August to repair a broken fibula, which he sustained after getting hit by Packers safety Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix. The Steelers placed Pouncey on IR with the designation to return, which would have kept him out until week 9 at the earliest.

We’ll have to wait and see how this revelation impacts Pouncey’s return date. For now, Cody Wallace remains the man in the middle.

Steelers Re-Sign Doug Legursky, Place Pouncey On Short Term IR

As expected, the Steelers placed center Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve/with the designation to return, and signed veteran center Doug Legursky this afternoon.

Pouncey broke his left fibula last month and the team brought in Legursky a few days later. With the short term IR, Pouncey can return as early as November 8th when the Steelers play the Oakland Raiders.

The Steelers now have Legursky and Chris Hubbard as backups behind Cody Wallace until Pouncey possibly returns. The team cut Legursky a couple days ago so they could use his roster spot until Pouncey was placed on short term IR. He will wear number 64.

Steelers Sign C/G Doug Legursky, Waive WR David Nelson

The Steelers have signed former Steelers C/G Doug Legursky this morning. To make room for the signing, the team has placed WR David Nelson on the waived/injured list.

The signing comes just the morning after Maurkice Pouncey had surgery to repair his broken ankle. Legursky started his career in 2008 as a UDFA and spent time on the Steelers practice squad. The following year he got a handful of reps across the line as a backup. He continued as a swing man across the middle until eventually replacing Maurkice Pouncey in the 2010 AFCCG and SuperBowl.

He was a free agent in 2013 and the Steelers didn’t re-sign him. He was signed by Buffalo, and was their starting left guard. Last year he was signed by the Chargers after their starting center fell to injury early in the season. Legursky only played a couple games before tearing his ACL which sidelined him for the year.

Legursky has battled with knee injuries the past couple seasons, and it wouldn’t be inaccurate to say he hasn’t exactly gotten better with age. As I said the other day, I expect the Steelers to roll with Cody Wallace at center, and if he goes down, then Legursky will be the next man up.

Pouncey Reportedly Had Surgery This Afternoon

The Steelers wasted no time getting injured center Maurkice Pouncey into surgery. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortenson, Pouncey had surgery to repair his broken ankle bone this afternoon.

While the specific details of his injury haven’t been disclosed, I postulated last night that his injury is a broken fibula. These are the most common ankle breaks due to the size and weakness of the bone. Coach Tomlin will undoubtedly update Pouncey’s status later in the week. As I said last night, I imagine the team will start the injured center on IR with the return designation. That would keep Pouncey out for at least 8 weeks.

I expect the team will roll with Cody Wallace, and will want to bring in another center who can step up in case Wallace goes down.

Maurkice Pouncey Needs Surgery, Has Broken Ankle

Maurkice Pouncey was injured during today’s win over the Green Bay Packers. He hurt his left ankle late in the first quarter, and ultimately was carted to the lockers after being checked by trainers on the sideline.

Coach Tomlin gave an update on his condition in his press conference after the game, referring to his ankle as “surgical”, and saying that he didn’t have an idea of how long it will sideline him.

Tomlin said Tuitt’s ankle is much less severe. He sprained his ankle today, and Tomlin said he will likely be down for a couple of weeks.

Without knowing exactly what the actual injury is and what surgery he’ll have, it’s hard to say exactly how long he might be out. I’d expect the team will use the IR/return designation on Pouncey. I imagine Cody Wallace will fill his shoes until he is able to return.

Update- According to Ed Bouchette, Pouncey has a broken ankle bone. This could mean different things and have different implications depending the nature and location of the break. We’ll have to wait for more info before we can play doctor. Well, you know what I mean.

Maurkice Pouncey Leaves On Cart After Apparent Ankle Injury

Maurkice Pouncey left the game late in the 1st quarter after suffering what appeared to be an injury to his left ankle. He was able to get to the sideline, but was later carted to the lockers. The team has ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

Pouncey was blocking ahead of Le’Veon Bell and had his ankle rolled up on. Hopefully Coach Tomlin will have some more info about his injury after the game. Cody Wallace has taken Pouncey’s place in the game.

Steelers Make Some Contract Moves To Clear Cap Space

The Steelers have restructured some contracts today to free up some salary cap room for the 2015 season.

According to Jason LaCanfora, the team restructured the contracts of Marcus Gilbert, Mike Mitchell, and Maurkice Pouncey. The total of the three transactions saves approximately $9.5 Mil in cap space, putting them approximately $10 Mil under the cap.

Gilbert’s restructure cleared apx. $3.76 Mil in 2015 cap space. His upcoming roster bonus and most of his base salary were rolled into a signing bonus.

According to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, Pouncey’s restructure isn’t official yet, and won’t be finalized until next week. Mitchell had a $2 Mil roster bonus coming up. Adding that to the maximum base salary available for restructuring would clear $2,441,250.

Going by LaCanfora’s numbers, we’re left with roughly $3.3 Mil with Pouncey’s contract. Pouncey also has a roster bonus due soon for the amount of $3.75 Mil. The maximum the team could clear by restructuring his contract is $3.804 Mil.

[Video] James Harrison Does “Center” Push Ups

James Harrison’s workout videos seldom fail to impress and entertain. His latest, posted by Marcus Gilbert on Instagram, has him taking his push up routine to a new level. Watch as Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey helps Harrison get the most out of his set. The music in the background is NSFW, so you may want to turn the volume down. Not bad for an “old” guy.

Report: Maurkice Pouncey Won’t Be Charged For Alleged Assault

According to the attorney representing Maurkice Pouncey, Pouncey will not be charged for the alleged assault that occurred in a Miami nightclub a few months ago.

Jeff Ostrow issued the following statement (via the Miami Herald), “As expected, the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney has determined that the Pouncey brothers should not be charged in connection with an altercation that occurred at the Cameo Nightclub on July 12, 2014,” said Ostrow.

“This further confirms that the previous claim that the brothers were involved was false and fabricated by individuals seeking notoriety and monetary gain.”

Here is a statement released by the State Attorney’s Office regarding their decision:

“Victims and witnesses advised that the music was very loud and the club was very crowded with a lot of pushing and shoving by many people. The Cameo Club did provide our office with a video, but it was of no probative value, because the room was so crowded that we could not distinguish anyone including the alleged victims or subjects in the video.

In addition, we were provided with many different versions of the incident that raised serious and unresolved proof and crdibility issues. Consequently, we cannot determine whether the injuries sustained by the alleged victims resulted from an intentional and unwanted touching or an unintentional touching resulting from the shoving and pushing of the crowd of people who were in a space too small to accommodate so many.

Consequently, there is insufficient credible evidence to charge Maurkice Pouncey or anyone else with battery.”

While this is good news for Pouncey, there is still a pending civil lawsuit against the Steelers center.

Several Sitting Out For Last Practice At Latrobe

The Steelers are holding their second joint practice with the Buffalo Bills tonight at St. Vincent, and the final practice of training camp. Several players are sitting out the joint practice tonight.

Will Allen, Will Johnson, Matt Spaeth, Jarvis Jones, Jordan Zumwalt, Maurkice Pouncey and Ramon Foster are all sidelined this evening. The two Wills are nursing hamstring strains they suffered in practice yesterday. Spaeth has missed the last couple practices for undisclosed reasons. Jarvis Jones and Jordan Zumwalt have been battling with groin injuries, and Ramon Foster has been out with knee swelling. There’s no information available about why Pouncey is sitting out tonight.

Ryan Shazier is nursing a bruised knee according to Coach Tomlin. He is practicing today, but probably only in a limited capacity as has been the case for the past couple days.

Earlier today, Mike Tomlin characterized Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier as questionable for Saturday night’s game against the Bills. Vince Williams, who has been sidelined with concussion symptoms, is suited up and will participate in some fashion tonight.
