The Steelers made their remaining necessary moves today to get their roster down to the 53 man requirement. Here is the roster as it stands right now. It is not permanent, and will likely change over the course of the next week.

Reserve/Supsended (2)

The Steelers signed former Bills CB Ross Cockerell to a one year deal today. RB Le’Veon Bell and WR Martavis Bryant are on the Reserve/Suspended list and do not count towards the 53 man roster during their suspensions.

Some noteworthy names made the squad. WR Tyler Murphy, LB Anthony Chickillo, S Ross Ventrone, and OL Alejandro Villanueva being the biggest standouts. Villanueva was a lock once Mike Adams was destined for PUP, but few would have guessed he’d make the 53 man roster.

The team has until 12:00 pm est tomorrow to make waiver claims on any players they like on the waiver wire. At 1:00 pm est all teams can assemble their 10 man practice squad. At 4:00 pm tomorrow, the team can place a player on Reserve/Injured with the designation to return.

Steelers Trim Roster Down To 75

The Steelers have made the remainder of the necessary cuts to get the roster down to 75. After waiving 9 this morning, the team needed to waive another 6 by 4:00 this afternoon to get in compliance. Here are the cuts-

OL Chris Elkins, RB Tauren Poole, LS Luke Ingram, OL Emmanuel McCray, DE Brian Arnfelt, and NT Hebron Fangupo.

Not really any huge surprises there, though I didn’t expect Tauren Poole to be cut today. The others were just a coin toss between today and Saturday. The team has until 4:00 pm on Saturday to get down to the final 53 man roster.

Steelers Waive 9 On Way To Cutting To 75

The Steelers announce the first of their roster cuts this morning as they work their way towards trimming down to 75. All teams have until 4:00 pm today to reduce their rosters to 75 players. Here is the list of the preliminary cuts.

RB Miguel Maysonet
RB Jordan Hall
WR CJ Goodwin
WR Kashif Moore
TE Eric Waters
S Jordan Dangerfield
CB Devin Smith
CB Lew Toler
LB Vic So’oto

The only real surprise here is Vic So’oto. Hopefully he’s still available when the team builds their 10 man practice squad next week. Currently the Steelers are carrying 81 men on their roster. The remaining 6 cuts will be announced later today.

Impactful Draft: True Need, Defensive Line

Heading into the draft there was high speculation, from the draft-nicks to the fanfare, the Steelers would be going in two directions; Wide Receivers or Cornerback. While both were addressed through the NFL Draft, the rounds in which the “need” positions were drafted ending up being considerably off. The apparent need for the 2014 edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers was defensive line. With all the speculation of how the picks are made, did the Steelers really go best player available (BPA) or did they address the most glaring need. In the 2014 draft certain things fell correctly, as they must, for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 2014 NFL Draft brought the Steelers two defensive linemen for the first time since Casey Hampton and Rodney Bailey in 2001. The linemen selections of Stephon Tuitt and Daniel McCullersare huge, and I am not speaking of McCullers’ stature, for a team in need of defensive line help. Both of these draft picks can be contributors, albeit possibly minimal, because of their experience using the technique employed by their previous schemes.

At Tennessee in 2012, McCullers played nose tackle in their 3-4 scheme. Coaches shifted, philosophies changed and in 2013, under Jon Jancek, the Vols played a 4-3. The change in base defense was not to McCullers benefit. While a 4-3 scheme allows defensive Tackles to shoot gaps more often; McCullers numbers took a hit. Starting two seasons and playing in two schemes, he registered more tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss in the 3-4 scheme as a junior then in the 4-3 scheme as a senior. The scheme was Jon Jancek’s little coat and this fat guy didn’t fit. There is a reason why a YouTube search shows 2012 highlights at a higher volume.

Tuitt’s accomplishments have been well documented. Looking at the good, you see a defensive end that can pursue, tackle, rush, and work at his craft. The knock on Stephon is his final year at Notre Dame. When comparing the last two seasons one can see increases in assisted tackles and total tackles. The slip to the second round may have been contributed to the drop in sack production from 12 to 7.5. The most glaring difference for the Fighting Irish between 2012 and 2013 is the final record of 12-1 and 9-4, respectively. Not the singular reason but looking to compare, 6 out the 10 top sack leaders in the NFL where on teams with 10 or more wins. When your team is winning, the opposition looks to get yards in chunks via the air. The sack drop off for Tuitt, maybe loosely, can be compared to his NFL counterparts.

Tuitt has the possibility of being the largest addition to the defensive line as of late. It is not common for the Steelers to draft a player that has already been playing the defensive end position in a 3-4 scheme for his entire college career. Tuitt’s learning curve will be far less than any other defensive end drafted by the Steelers in recent history. In grandpa Lebeau’s complex scheme, Tuitt’s confusion should be as minimal as a muddled jury at the Aaron Hernandez trail and allow stiff competition at camp.

Thomas, Tuitt, McCullers, have all played in a system similar to the one currently used in Pittsburgh. Williams, Arnfelt, and Fangupo have seen the defense. With only two returning starters on the roster, there will be many new names Steelers fans will watch. With nine current defensive lineman on the roster there will surely be the odd men out but who is the new guy in?new-steelers-jersey

Steelers Head Into Rookie Weekend With Full 90 Man Roster

The Steelers will hold rookie orientation this weekend (May 16th-18th), and after signing 9 undrafted free agents, they have filled all available roster spots. All NFL teams may carry a total of 90 players on their rosters during the off-season, and can maintain that number until mid-August when the limit drops to 75, and then ultimately to the final 53.

Below is the roster as it currently stands, minus the undrafted free agents.

[wpdatatable id=7]

Here is the list of confirmed undrafted free agents the team has signed, and will be attending rookie minicamp this weekend.

Chris Elkins, C, Youngstown State
Eric Waters, TE, Missouri
Josh Mauro, DE, Stanford
Howard Jones, OLB, Shepard
Kaycee Ike, OT, UAB
Brendan Kay, QB, Cincinnati
Ethan Hemer, DE Wisconsin
Will Simmons, OL, East Carolina
Roy Philon, DT, Louisville

Below are the reported (though unconfirmed) UDFA’s who have been invited to tryout with the team this weekend at the minicamp.

Mike Franklin, DL, Shepard
Devon Carrington, S, Stanford
Jake DeMedal, S, St. Francis
Dillon Baxter, RB, Baker
Jordan Hall, RB, Ohio State
Steve Greene, OL, UConn
Najja Johnson, CB, Buffalo
Adam Gress, OT, Penn State

That list is not all-inclusive of course. There are several other players who will be in attendance trying out for the team, who haven’t been disclosed yet. All in all, there should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 players present including the 9 men the Steelers drafted over the weekend.

Steelers Sign 7 To Reserve/Futures Contracts

The Steelers announce that they have signed seven players from their practice squad to reserve/futures contracts.

RB Alvester Alexander, WR Justin Brown, OL Bryant Browning, OL Chris Hubbard, WR Kashif Moore, DB Ross Ventrone, and LB Kion Wilson.

Reserve/Futures contracts are just that- contracts signed for the future league year. Players who are not currently on an active roster can be signed to these deals so they can be retained for next year. The 2014 league year begins at 4:00 pm March 11, 2014.

Steelers Sign C/G David Snow To Active Roster

The Steelers announce that they have signed former Bills C/G David Snow to the active roster. The team was granted a roster exemption for Rashad Butler after he was placed on the exempt list.

Snow (6’4″, 303), was a UDFA originally signed by the Bills in 2012. He played at right guard and center for the Bills during 3 games last year, and appears to be a serviceable lineman.

The Steelers also added CB Brandon Jones to the practice squad today. Jones replaces Devin Smith on the practice squad. Jones was a UDFA who signed with the Patriots this Spring and spent the summer with them before being cut. He recently was on the Giants practice squad before being released last week.

Steelers Place C. Brown On IR, Make Other Roster Moves

The team has placed CB Curtis Brown on Injured Reserve today. Brown suffered an ACL injury on Sunday, and Coach Tomlin announced yesterday that he was done for the season. To fill the available roster spot, the team has promoted CB Isaiah Green from the practice squad as I expected.

CB Devin Smith has been signed to the available practice squad opening. Smith was brought in by the team during training camp and has been on and off the practice squad this season. You can see more about his comings and goings here: http://thesteelersfans.com/?s=Devin+Smith.
