Heinz Field Really Unlikely For Bills Vs. Jets Alternate Site

Heinz field is reportedly being considered as a possible alternate site for the Bills Jets game that was scheduled for Sunday in Buffalo. Due to the snowpocalypse, playing the game in Buffalo doesn’t seem like a reasonable possibility.

The only reason to even mention Pittsburgh is the fact that the Steelers have this week off. After four high school games and the Pitt football game Saturday, the plan is to re-sod the field, which needs a week to set. I would say that Pittsburgh would be an absolute last resort, with Detroit being the most logical alternative.

Patriots Sign LeGarrette Blount To Two Year Deal

The Patriots have signed RB LeGarrette Blount to a two year deal. Blount was released by the Steelers on Tuesday after leaving the Titans game early. Boston Globe reporter Ben Volin confirmed the news on Twitter this morning.

https://twitter.com/BenVolin/status/535423342678134784

Blount was with the Patriots during the 2013 season, and they were reportedly interested in the free agent running back during the off season, but with the depth on their roster, they weren’t interested enough to get into a bidding war with other teams.

The contract terms aren’t immediately available, but it’s a 2 year deal with a 2014 base salary for the veteran minimum. So, the Pats will essentially be getting him for $257,647 to play out the rest of the year. The deal will be incentive laden according to a league source.

Steelers Sign RB LaDarius Perkins To Practice Squad

As I prognosticated yesterday, the Steelers have added a running back to the practice squad to fill the void left by Josh Harris. Harris was promoted to the active roster yesterday. The team announced this morning that they have added LaDarius Perkins to the practice squad.

https://twitter.com/SteelersPRBurt/status/535105360965947392

Perkins is a 5’10, 195 lb back that went undrafted out of Mississippi State. He was signed by the Packers this spring, but ultimately released. He has been playing in the experimental FXFL this fall for the Omaha Mammoths.

Perkins amassed 2554 rushing yards throughout his 4 year college career. Here’s a look at his highlight reel.

Classless Fans Rewarded Or: Steelers Wish They Could Ban Mike Mitchell From Twitter

It’s being reported by 93.7 The Fan, and multiple media outlets, that the Steelers have banned Safety Mike Mitchell from social media. The reported banning centers around a heated Twitter exchange after last night’s victory over the Titans.

First, some immature fan tells Mitchell what he thinks of him via Twitter during last night’s game.

https://twitter.com/Tomkatf14/status/534547850026573824

He allegedly gets a direct message (private message for you non-tweeters) reply from Mitchell. The Twitter user,  @Tomkatf14 tweeted a screenshot of the DM to different crew members of the 93.7 The Fan.

Embedded image permalink

This wasn’t the only alleged fan who received a mean reply from Mitchell. Another user posted this DM, but after perusing their timeline, it’s pretty evident that they deleted their initial tweets to the Steelers Safety.

A couple things here. There’s a bit of bad journalism that deserves some finger pointing. Using the headline ‘Mike Mitchell tweets go kill yourself to fan’ is misleading, and probably purposely so. He didn’t “tweet” that to anyone, he private messaged it (allegedly). There’s a huge difference, and I’m sure the author, though unnamed in the article (oddly enough), is well aware of that. Furthermore, posting these screenshots of Mitchell’s DM’s without posting screenshots to show the context is a little bush league. (See what I did there?)

Look, I’m not condoning Mitchell’s actions. Any professional athlete should know that Twitter and Facebook are riddled with trollish fans, and if they can’t refrain from sinking down to their level, then they should stay away from social media altogether. Having said that, this guy (kid?) Tomkat is an ass. An ass who went whining to media members hoping to get attention- and he got it.

While the author might think Mitchell’s comments were “disturbing”, it may help he/she/robot to know that “kill yourself” is an extremely popular thing to say on social media. Not something a Pittsburgh Steeler should be messaging to a “fan”, but highly doubtful he meant it in the literal sense. From UrbanDictionary:

2014-11-18_2136 2014-11-18_2136_001

Lastly, the Steelers can’t “ban” Mitchell from using social media. They can ask him nicely to not use it or behave a certain way, but they don’t have the power to outright ban a player from using social media. The only authority the league has against social media usage prevents players from posting on social media 90 minutes before a game until following the conclusion of media interviews after a game. In theory, a team could use the personal conduct policy to discipline a player if they deemed their actions to be unbecoming.

RB Josh Harris Promoted From Practice Squad

As expected, the team has signed Josh Harris to the 53 man roster. Harris has been on the practice squad since the start of the season. The 6’0″, 206 lb running back saw 32 snaps over the 3 games he was dressed for during preseason. Look for the Steelers to at least add another running back to the practice squad, likely one they’re familiar with, over the coming days.

LeGarrette Blount

Steelers Release RB LeGarrette Blount

In what you might call a surprise move, the Steelers have released RB LeGarrette Blount. Blount reportedly left the field last night before the game was over due to being unhappy with his lack of playing time. According to reports, Joey Porter saw Blount leaving the locker room early and called him back in. Blount did come back in briefly, but ultimately left before some teammates finished post game interviews. Here you can see Blount fully dressed before teammates are out of their uniforms.

Leaving your teammates before the game is finished is pretty unacceptable at any level of sports. As inconvenient as this is in terms of running back depth, you have to applaud Coach Tomlin for making such a swift and decisive move on this. To quote Ike Taylor from his radio show this morning: “Aint nobody bigger than the Steelers emblem.”

Mike Tomlin released the following statement about the cutting of Blount: “We believe the decision to release LeGarrette is in the best interest of the organization and wish him the best of luck.”

The release of Blount will clear the team $317,647 in 2014 salary cap space. The move also brings $475,000 in dead money from the remainder of his prorated signing bonus on the books.

The Browns waived Ben Tate today, but I would imagine the odds of him coming to Pittsburgh are very slim to none. One league reporter said that she was told that a Steelers employee called a Browns employee this morning inquiring about Tate’s release, but I’d take that kind of talk with a grain of salt.

Behind Le’Veon Bell, you’ve got Dri Archer, FB Will Johnson, and RB Josh Harris on the practice squad. I’d expect a move to be made soon.

Coach Tomlin On The Win Over The Titans

Here is a transcript from Coach Tomlin’s post game press conference after last night’s victory over the Titans.

Tomlin:

Not perfect, but really just a great night for us in that we were down by 11 and we had a great opportunity to bounce back. Any time you can do that and gain victory you grow from it and you grow from it in a right way. A lot of positive contributions. A lot of guys not blinking down the stretch. We also did some things to put ourselves in that situation.

In the first half of the game we stalled in the red area on offense. We gave up a big play on defense in situational football. You can’t do that. You’ve got to be able to anticipate those things. We had a couple of penalties in the return game that negated a couple of nice returns. We had a punt return to midfield; we had a block in the back on that. We had a decent kickoff return that made us start on the minus 10.

We have some things that we need to work on during the bye week. We can potentially get some guys back from a health standpoint. We’re not going to speculate about that right now. We’ll assess that when we get back in Pittsburgh. But right now we don’t take things for granted. Monday night, AFC road wins, big ball for us, big night for us.

On the play of Le’Veon Bell:

I am not going to say anything about Le’Veon that I hadn’t said before. He is a good, young player. He wants to be a central reason why we are successful. He can do it in the running game. He can do it in the passing game. Tonight it was more of the running game.

Our guys up front did a heck of a job of getting hats on hats and blocking the looks. Those weren’t easy looks. They got aggressive down the stretch and it was a bunch of people in the box and he was still having an opportunity to get on a safety. He is going to get a lot of recognition, and I think a lot of recognition is deserved for everyone.

What prompted the decision to go to Le’Veon so much tonight and not all season long?

He has to be closing in on 1,000 yards. He has run this ball some. Some games we feature Ben (Roethlisberger) and what we are capable of doing outside. Some games we feature him. Some games we try to feature both and be balanced. It’s really about how the game unfolds inside the stadium. We saw some looks tonight that we felt comfortable we could get hats on hats because their defense structurally is built like our defense. I am sure they felt the same way about some of the looks we provided them. I’m sure they’ve seen some of those looks in practice and so forth. The stage was set for him to have a good night and they did the job.

On increasing the pressure on Zach Mettenberger in the second half:

I don’t know if we did. I think we spent so much time watching the game because our offense possessed the ball and that creates a certain amount of urgency or frenzy when a team is possessing the ball the way we were possessing the ball. I think that created that sense if you will.

What does it say about this football team that you can have a 500-yard passer one week and a 200-yard rusher another?

We’ve been very upfront that we want to be a very balanced group. We want to be a group that’s capable of stepping in the stadium and throwing with anybody in the NFL. We want to be a group that is capable of stepping in and running with anybody in the NFL. I think we are rounding into form in that regard. And then we can just do what the game presents to us. I think that is a recipe for real long-term success. We still have to get better in the red area. We kicked two field goals and threw an interception in the first half. That put us in the situation that we were in.

On the long touchdown pass to Nate Washington:

They dialed up a double move and got us. They protected it, they ran a good route and he executed a throw. At the same time we are talking about 80 yards away from pay dirt. It’s situational football. There’s 40 seconds left to go in the half. That’s unacceptable. We have to be better than that. I tip my cap to those guys. It was a nice call. It was great execution. But we have to be better than that.

Was there supposed to be safety help on that play?

I am not getting into all of that. I said we accept responsibility for it. I tip my cap to those guys for execution.

It seemed like you went with three receivers instead of interchanging them. Was there a reason?

We interchanged. We used 85, 16, 10 , 11. We played in a very similar manner that we’ve been playing for a number of weeks.

Steelers Lose Josh Mauro To Arizona, Re-Sign Ethan Hemer

It’s almost like the Cardinals are trolling Steelers fans for Pittsburgh West jokes. According to reports, Arizona has “poached” DE Josh Mauro from the Steelers practice squad. The Steelers PR department has confirmed the acquisition.

https://twitter.com/SteelersPRBurt/status/533266912575115264

Any team can sign a player from another team’s practice squad. The player must be signed to their 53 man roster however, and must be paid for at least 3 weeks minimum salary, even if he’s released beforehand. If Mauro is released by the Cardinals, the Steelers can re-sign him to their practice squad. Mauro was featured in all of the Steelers preseason games, and, while raw, showed flashes of talent.

To fill the vacancy on the scout team, the Steelers have re-signed DL Ethan Hemer. Hemer was released last weekk when the team added Jordan Dangerfield to the practice squad.
