Steelers Make Some Contract Moves To Clear Cap Space

The Steelers have restructured some contracts today to free up some salary cap room for the 2015 season.

According to Jason LaCanfora, the team restructured the contracts of Marcus Gilbert, Mike Mitchell, and Maurkice Pouncey. The total of the three transactions saves approximately $9.5 Mil in cap space, putting them approximately $10 Mil under the cap.

Gilbert’s restructure cleared apx. $3.76 Mil in 2015 cap space. His upcoming roster bonus and most of his base salary were rolled into a signing bonus.

According to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, Pouncey’s restructure isn’t official yet, and won’t be finalized until next week. Mitchell had a $2 Mil roster bonus coming up. Adding that to the maximum base salary available for restructuring would clear $2,441,250.

Going by LaCanfora’s numbers, we’re left with roughly $3.3 Mil with Pouncey’s contract. Pouncey also has a roster bonus due soon for the amount of $3.75 Mil. The maximum the team could clear by restructuring his contract is $3.804 Mil.

Steelers Preseason

Shamarko Thomas Ruled Out, Ryan Shazier Likely To Return Sunday

Not much in the way of surprises for the Steelers injury report today. NT Steve McLendon (shoulder), CB Ike Taylor (forearm) and S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring) have all been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Heinz Field.

OT Marcus Gilbert (concussion) is listed as doubtful. Mike Adams will get the start at RT with Gilbert being out. There is no backup OT currently on the 53 man roster, so the coaching staff will have to get creative on the line should one of the two tackles go down. The team used Ramon Foster as an emergency tackle in the past, and I would expect them to slide him over if the need arose.

DE Brett Keisel, S Mike Mitchell, S Troy Polamalu and LB Ryan Shazier (knee) are all listed as probable. This will be the rookie linebacker’s 1st game since spraining his knee 4 weeks ago.

Shazier And Ike Limited, McLendon And Gilbert Did Not Practice Today

The Steelers resumed practice activities today as they prepare to host the Indianapolis Colts on a short week. Here’s a look at the injury/participation report:

Did Not Practice:

NT Steve McLendon (shoulder), OT Marcus Gilbert (concussion), DE Brett Keisel (not injury related), S Michael Mitchell (not injury related), S Troy Polamalu (not injury related).

Limited:

LB Ryan Shazier (knee), CB Ivan Taylor (forearm), S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring)

Earlier in the day, media members and Steelers staffers were erroneously reporting that Shazier had missed practice, but he was actually limited according to the official NFL injury report.

Another noteworthy item on the injury report is Ike Taylor’s return to practice. This is his first time back to practice (albeit in a limited capacity) since suffering that grotesque forearm break a month ago.

Taylor said he did individual drills and cardio today, and that he doesn’t have a timetable for his return. He went on to say, “I feel like I’m a mutant. I got two Wolverine plates in my arm. Just need a little Wolverine blood, I’ll be straight”

Steelers Extend RT Marcus Gilbert

The Steelers have extending right tackle Marcus Gilbert. The financial specifics are not immediately available of course, but the new deal is for 6 years. Sources indicate that the 6 year deal is for $30 Mil. I wrote recently that his deal should be in the $5 Mil per year range. We’ll have to wait to see what the guarantees are, which is all that’s truly important. This extension makes Pouncey and Gilbert both under contract through 2019.

Gilbert has had his struggles, but he’s definitely shown improvement since Mike Munchak was brought on board. About the extension Gilbert said via the Steelers website, “It means I am locked in hopefully as a Steeler for the rest of my career. It’s a blessing to work for a great organization, the Rooney family, Kevin Colbert and Coach Tomlin. Just to be around in Pittsburgh, where they show you so much love, I couldn’t be happier and in a better place.”

Gilbert is the only lineman who started every game in 2013.

Contract Extension For Marcus Gilbert Could Get Done This Week

If reports are to be believed, the next player to have their contract extended by the Steelers will be Marcus Gilbert. According to Ed Bouchette of the Post Gazette, the Steelers are trying to extend Gilbert, and the deal could get done this week.

There have been reports throughout the summer that Gilbert was seeking an extension, and the team had been negotiating with his agent. As recently as a couple weeks ago, Gilbert said that the Steelers were working on a new deal with his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

From the Trib:

Tackle Marcus Gilbert, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, said his agent Drew Rosenhaus has been talking to the Steelers about a contract extension. “We will know in a few weeks,” Gilbert said. “I am either going to get it now or wait it out. For me, it is all about getting better with my guys.”

Gilbert has shown improvement and looked solid in the preseason opener. A few weeks ago, Craig Wolfey and Tunch Ilkin both agreed that Gilbert looks better, and that his base and stance have improved thanks to Mike Munchak.

When looking at contract values, you should avoid focusing on APY (average per year), but I’d expect his extension to be in the $5 Mil APY range.

Ben Roethlisberger Blows Off Steam In Georgia With His Line

Ben Roethlisberger is working on some male bonding with his starting offensive linemen in Georgia this week. Ben, Maurkice Pouncey, Marcus Gilbert, Kelvin Beachum, Mike Adams, Ramon Foster, and David DeCastro flew down in a private jet yesterday. While the exact location wasn’t disclosed, I can only presume that they are visiting Lake Oconee, GA, where the quarterback owns a lake home.

Thanks to Ramon Foster via Twitter, we get to have a personal look at their excursion.

The team will reconvene on Tuesday, May 27th for OTA’s, so this week is the last hurrah to get some R&R and bonding in before workouts get more serious.

Most Of O-Line Back To Full Practice And Other Injury News

Most of the offensive line returned to full participation today during practice. Mike Adams (ribs), Kelvin Beachum (hip), David DeCastro (ankle), Marcus Gilbert (ankle) and Fernando Velasco (knee) were all full participants today. Ramon Foster however, did not participate again today. Guy Whimper told media that he has been practicing at left guard, and is preparing to start against the Lions. He did add however that, “ I prepare to start every week because you never know. It’s the NFL. Guys get banged up.”

Brett Keisel (foot) and  LaMarr Woodley (calf) also did not participate in practice for the second day in a row.

4 Steelers To Start Training Camp On PUP List

Coach Tomlin addressed the media in Latrobe today, and announced that the following players would start training camp on the PUP list: Heath Miller, Sean Spence, David Johnson, and Alameda Ta’amu. Heath Miller and Sean Spence come as no surprise obviously, but David Johnson and Alameda Ta’amu Continue reading
