No Reason For Steelers to Panic

http://gty.im/461058280

The Pittsburgh Steelers got awful news when they learned that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tore his meniscus. He underwent surgery on Monday to repair the damage to his knee, and the timetable for his return is not yet clear. He may miss four to six weeks, but he could heal quickly and be back in a couple of weeks. The only game that he has been ruled out for so far is the game this Sunday against New England. If the Steelers can take things in stride, they should have no reason to panic while they wait for Big Ben to come back.

The Next Few Weeks Are Favorable
Even if Roethlisberger was healthy, the odds would likely be against the Steelers being able to win this Sunday against New England. The Patriots look like a team on a mission since Brady came back from his Deflategate suspension, and so losing this Sunday doesn’t really hurt them. They also get a bye next week, which is perfect timing with this injury to their starting quarterback. The bye means that Roethlisberger has until November 6 to heal up, which is when Pittsburgh travels to play Baltimore.

If Big Ben can somehow come back in time for the Baltimore game, then it will be as if the injury didn’t really affect the team at all. On the other hand, the team has no reason to panic even if Roethlisberger misses additional time. It is not as if the team is not capable of winning without Big Ben.

Lots of Talent on Offense
Roethlisberger is not the only reason that the Steelers record is 4-2. They have plenty of other offensive weapons to lean on. Le’Veon Bell is one of the best running backs in the league, and the Steelers offensive line does an excellent job of opening big holes for him. As long as they can continue to do that, the Pittsburgh offense should be able to keep the team in games even if Roethlisberger remains sidelined for an extended period of time.

The other big weapon on offense is wide receiver Antonio Brown. He will now be catching passes from Landry Jones rather than Roethlisberger, but a change in quarterback won’t slow him down. Brown can gain separation from almost any corner unfortunate enough to draw the assignment of covering him.

While Jones may not be a stellar replacement at quarterback, he is a serviceable one. If he can manage the offense and avoid mistakes, he should be able to lead the Steelers to some victories. He has already shown great leadership by urging his teammates not to panic. If he can show the same poise on the field, the Steelers will handle Big Ben’s absence well.

After all, the Steelers went 2-2 in the four games that Roethlisberger missed with injuries last season. If they can stay around .500 again without Big Ben, they should be in fine shape to make a run at the playoffs when his knee heals up.

Strike Three Your Out: The 3rd Down Saga

landryjonesart1110

Many of us football fans know what it takes to sustain drives and score points: move the chains. For the 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers, this has been seldom an issue. Currently…Pittsburgh ranks fifth in the league in 3rd down efficiency. As a result…it is no surprise that Pittsburgh has been able to not only score a point average over 30 in their 4 wins, but have a 51.92% rating on third down efficiency; easily among the best in the league.

Such an ability to sustain drives is why Pittsburgh has the offense of world champions. Not only does this allow Todd Haley to become more flexible in his playcalling, it forces opposing defenses to be honest. Most importantly though, it wears the defense down, which in turn, allows the offense to control the game.

Against the New England Patriots, one would think that the Belichek led squad is nigh omnipotent given their fundamental, precise approach with an emphasis to execute. However… one anomaly does stand out; 3rd down defense. This is where we can find kinks in Matt Patrica’s seemingly impervious armor.

For a team that has been widely reputed as the NFL standard of executing assignments and playing fundamental, one would think that such an area is where a coaching candidate like Matt Patricia would be effective. However, this is not the case as they are not even in the top 10; 15 not even. Coming into Sunday’s matchup, New England is ranked 27th. Yes, you are reading that right.

New England is ranked 27th.

For Mike Tomlin and Todd Haley, of all their chances to win, this one sticks out like a sore thumb. Despite this, there is the issue with Big Ben Roethlisberger not playing; Landry Jones being the frontrunner at quarterback. As horrific as this sounds, Landry is not alone. He does still have Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown to assist him. Add the fact that he has been in the system and did enough to win Pittsburgh a game against an evenly talented Arizona squad from a year ago and the prospects of Jones starting in absence of Ben is not as dreadful as some of SteelersNation makes it out to be.

Now, Do not get me wrong, this is easily the Steelers toughest test of the year; no Ben making it even more so. However, if Landry was as bad as people say he was, why is he on the roster? There is no one else out there in free agency that neither Tomlin nor Colbert trust to bring in. Better yet, if Jones was that terrible, he would have been let go after the 2013 preseason.

Either way, while Jones’ track record in starts has been spotty, he is good enough to be Ben’s backup. However, it is not Landry SteelersNation should really be focusing on.. , but rather the Steelers third down defense.

If we are going by face value, Pittsburgh ranks 10th in the league for said statistic. However, much like we have seen from Pittsburgh’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” season, there is more to this defense than the stats are letting on. When factoring all four Pittsburgh wins, their 3rd down defense is preventing teams from converting 19.29%. However, when Pittsburgh loses, the percentage skyrockets to 45.83%. Much like before, this is as “Jekyll and Hyde” as you are going to get.

As for the Patriots, their offense is also much of the same like Pittsburgh minus the sneaky loss stat. For their third down percentage when factoring in all of them, the amount equates to 55.73%; a higher value then even when Pittsburgh wins. However, in the lone New England loss…, their total is 8.33%. Clearly, this number is abysmal. There is one catch however. A hobbled quarterback usually equates into a downgrade in performance, a third string doubly so. Jacoby Brissett’s injury clearly limited his abilities; the first ever shutout at the hands of their rival in the Buffalo Bills as a result. So really.. remove that statistic and New England’s percentage is great; not a good sign for the Steelers who do not have Cameron Heyward and may not have Ryan Shazier either. As such, Pittsburgh’s third down efficiency is the X Factor for this week.

tomlin-no-dancing

If there was ever a time to ramp up the fundamentals and execute assignments, then this is the time that Pittsburgh needs to do it. Given their sloppy performances against the likes of Eagles and the Dolphins, Pittsburgh has truly been the “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” of the NFL’s top tier teams and it is not even close. For Pittsburgh to beat Tom Brady’s “Revenge Tour Express”, Landry Jones and the defense has to play mistake free football to win it while sustaining drives. This means racking up consistent third down conversions. The more Tom Brady stands on the sidelines, the more of a percentage the Steelers will win. Otherwise, this game can get out of hand very quickly given the bevy of weapons Brady has not named Rob Gronkowski.

Either way, I do expect the Steelers to come out more focused and play more fundamentally and execute effectively.

[Video] Pacman Jones Issues Apology To Antonio Brown

Not that it matters. Not that anyone should care what Jones thinks or says…but, the Bengals cornerback stayed true to his word today and issued an apology to Antonio Brown regarding his “injury faking” remarks. Jones swore that Brown was faking and that he’d be playing Sunday.

Antonio Brown Has Been Ruled Out For The Broncos Game

The Steelers have announced that Antonio Brown has been ruled out for the divisional playoff game in Denver this Sunday.

https://twitter.com/steelers/status/688003827312779265

This doesn’t come as a big surprise. Brown didn’t participate in practice yesterday, and as I mentioned, he would need to show the team physician and a neurological consultant that he can participate in “football activity” without a setback. These tests are typically a day or two apart.

With Brown ruled out, the important question now becomes- will Pacman Jones issue that apology he promised? Just kidding. Of course he won’t. He’ll likely say that the conspiracy is so deep that the Steelers held Brown out to cover up his fake injury.

The important question becomes how will the Steelers find a way to replace AB’s production? Heath Miller, Markus Wheaton, Martavis Bryant, Darrius Heyward-Bey, the TnT backfield and perhaps even Jesse James and Sammie Coates will all need to be sharp when they face the league’s number 1 passing defense.

Antonio Brown And DeAngelo Williams Miss Practice Again

While the wide receiver hinted at returning to practice last night on Snapchat, it appears to have just been wishful thinking.

Martavis Bryant told media members this afternoon that AB has been going to team meetings. While the door isn’t closed for Brown to play on Sunday, it’s creaking slowly that way. Brown will still has to show the team physician and a neurological consultant that he can participate in “football activity” without a setback.

DeAngelo Williams did not practice again today. He was in a walking boot yesterday and visited a foot specialist earlier in the week. He is reportedly out of the walking boot today for what it’s worth.

Here’s the rest of today’s injury report:

Ben Roethlisberger, Robert Golden, Vince Williams, and Will Johnson were limited. Cam Heyward and Ryan Shazier were full participants.

Steelers Do Some Restructuring; Brown Gets More Cash In 2015

The Steelers have restructured some contracts today. According to Adam Schefter, the team has restructured the contracts of Heath Miller, Antonio Brown, and Shaun Suisham.

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/638769139998457856

The moves clear roughly $6 Mil in 2015 cap space. Schefter reports that the team made the moves to provide an offset for the number of injured players consuming cap space, and, while that may be partially true, it’s quite probable that the front office is trying to get their ducks in a row before locking up OT Kelvin Beachum prior to the season getting underway.

It appears that the Steelers did some type of traditional restructuring of Brown’s contract, while also moving forward $2 Mil of money that he was due in 2016, to give him a “raise” now. I speculated the team may make a similar move like this to “appease” Brown’s camp, who have been very much in the news regarding their hopes in getting more money for AB. I imagine they’ll be having more conversations when the season is over…

I’ll give a more detailed breakdown of these restructures when I get a little more information about the financials. About the “raise”, Antonio Brown said, “I’m extremely grateful and humbled.”

Antonio Brown’s Agent Meeting With Steelers, Hopes For New Deal

Multiple news outlets are reporting that super-agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Antonio Brown, will be meeting with team officials Friday in Jacksonville. The agent just finished arranging a $65Mil extension with $39Mil in guarantees for TY Hilton in Indianapolis this morning. Rosenhaus hopes tomorrow’s meeting will result in a reworking of Antonio Brown’s contract.

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/631807273426415616

The Steelers are arriving in Florida tonight as they prepare to face the Jaguars for Friday night’s preseason matchup.

Antonio Brown is one of the best receivers in the NFL. In 2012, the Steelers signed him to a 6 year, $41.7 Mil contract extension.  Since then, he’s grown into one of the most productive receivers in the league. Brown was the league leader last year with 29 receptions and totaled 1,698 yards- both of which were team records.

Compared to his counterparts in the league, AB is relatively low paid, especially for his production. He averages just under $8.4 Mil/year- the 12th highest among NFL receivers in terms of APY. The Steelers have restructured Brown’s contract twice already. His remaining cap hits are $9,787,500, $12,037,500, and $10,797,500 respectively.

Should the Steelers give Brown more money right now? The answer is going to vary depending on who you ask, but if you’re asking me, the answer is ‘nah’, and the Steelers aren’t going to.  Why would they? There’s really no incentive for the team to do so. At this juncture, they are just being polite and are keeping the conversation lines open with Brown’s camp. ‘We know you want more money’, ‘We know you’re playing above your contract’s value’, ‘Be patient and keep up the good work’.

There’s no reason to think Brown won’t have another very productive season, and after the season is over, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers are ready to entertain more serious negotiations which result in netting Brown more guaranteed money.

Antonio Brown Suggests He Will Rejoin Team Soon

Antonio Brown made his first real comments on Twitter today since reports came out suggesting that he was considering holding out for a new contract. Brown took to Twitter today to tell his fans that he’s spending time with his newborn baby. Brown says he’s a dad first, and that he can’t wait to reunite with his teammates.

https://twitter.com/AntonioBrown84/status/590914953403572227

If you were to look at his Twitter mentions over the past couple of days, you’d probably be surprised at how many people took the rumors of his contract woes personally. Brown doesn’t owe anyone an explanation, but this should help tamper some of the anger many Steelers fans seem to be feeling. Spending time with your newborn baby is a pretty good reason to miss voluntary workouts.

Many players don’t attend voluntary workouts anyway, so there really isn’t anything to even talk about at this point. The team can’t act until a player misses mandatory mini-camp, and I’d imagine Brown will be in attendance. With 3 years left on his contract, he surely must know that the odds of the team doing anything with his contract this year aren’t in his favor.

Will Antonio Brown “Be There” For Mini-Camp?

Antonio Brown posted a very short, but seemingly purposeful message on his Twitter account tonight.

https://twitter.com/AntonioBrown84/status/590654674245672960

A couple weeks ago this tweet would have been practically meaningless. Since it’s the first we’ve heard from AB since rumors started circulating that he was considering holding out to get more money, it’s hard to ignore the obvious.

Brown has 3 years remaining on his contract. He has certainly performed like a top wide receiver, but he isn’t really getting paid like it. Right now his absence from voluntary workouts means nothing. He, like many other NFL players, is off training on his own.

While recent reports have indicated that he’s considering holding out through mini-camp and into training camp, I have little doubt that he’ll be at training camp this summer. The team, if they so choose, can fine Brown $70,000 if he does decide not to attend mini-camp.

Report: Antonio Brown Considering Holding Out For New Deal

According to multiple media outlets, Antonio Brown wants a new deal, and is considering holding out from mini-camp and training camp if he doesn’t get one.

https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/590164352621092864

Antonio Brown is one of the best, if not the best wide receiver in the NFL. He signed a 6 year, $41.7 Mil contract extension in 2012 when Mike Wallace played the hold out game. Since then, he’s grown into one of the most productive receivers in the league. AB was the league leader last year with 29 receptions and amassed 1,698 yards- both of which were team records.

As productive as Brown is, his APY is pretty low compared to his peers. He averages roughly $8.3 Mil/year- the 14th highest among NFL receivers. The Steelers have restructured Brown’s contract twice already. His remaining cap hits are $9,787,500, $12,037,500, and $10,797,500 respectively.

Production aside, Brown’s camp is probably going to be in for disappointment if he were to hold out this summer. With 3 years left on his contract, the chances of him benefiting from holding out are slim. Personally, I’m skeptical of the validity of these reports.

Brown is not participating in the voluntary workouts that began today.
