Troy Polamalu Informs Steelers He’s Retiring

Troy Polamalu is announcing his retirement tonight. According to Jim Wexell, via the Herald Standard, Polamalu phoned Dan Rooney last night to inform him of his decision.

Even though this was expected, I still feel like I’m writing a eulogy. Polamalu was is a legend. In his prime, he could change the dynamic, hell, the outcome of a game at any given time. He forced opposing coaches to make their players wear wigs in practice. He could grow an extra finger momentarily to pick off a quarterback.

His resume speaks for itself, and even though so many ‘all time greats’ have donned the Steelers jersey, Troy’s name is iconic. During his illustrious 12 year career, he made it to 8 Pro Bowls, was All Pro 5 times, saw 2 Super Bowl Championships, was the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and made the 2000’s All Decade Team.

Polamalu’s retirement will save the Steelers $3.75 Mil in cap space this season. Polamalu said he didn’t seriously consider playing anywhere else. It was just a matter of deciding if he wanted to continue playing. In the end, he said it was about his family. “It’s all about family,” said Polamalu. “I live here in Pittsburgh now, and since the end of the season I’ve had a chance to enjoy my family on a level I never had before. It was awesome.”

Thanks for the memories, #43.

Steelers Offer Update On Troy Polamalu

The Steelers provided a brief update on Troy Polamalu’s contract status this morning. The update: there is no update. Here is the full release provided on the team’s website.

“At this time, we do not have an update on Troy Polamalu or his contract status. We will continue to communicate with Troy and his representatives regarding his future.”

Why release a statement with no real information? Perhaps it was strategic. If the front office hasn’t heard much from Troy’s camp, maybe they’re looking to light a subtle fire under them.

Troy is slotted to count $8.25 Mil against the cap this year if nothing changes. The odds of that happening are about as close to none as it can get. The likely scenarios are: a) the team releases Troy and designates him a June 1st cut. b) the team asks Troy to take a very significant pay cut. c) Troy retires.

The team could outright release Troy, but the difference between that and a June 1st designation is $2.25 Mil in cap savings this year. If Troy were to retire, the team could possibly recoup some of his signing bonus money, but that gets a little murky, and recent rumors have indicated Troy doesn’t plan on retiring.

Regardless of how it plays out, Troy’s future in Pittsburgh will be known very soon.

Troy Polamalu Will Start Tonight

Throughout the week, there has been much speculation regarding Troy Polamalu’s availability for the Ravens game, and whether he should start tonight even if healthy. Some of that speculation was incited by Coach Tomlin earlier this week, when he was non-committal when asked about playing a healthy Polamalu.

Tomlin put the question to rest today. “Yes he does,” said Tomlin when asked if Polamalu will start. Tomlin added that it’s not a difficult decision when Troy is the subject. He also explained why he was non-committal about Troy earlier in the week.  “I needed to see him prepare. Sometimes a guy is able to play at the 11th hour and they don’t get the in-helmet preparation over the course of the work week.

“When you get to January football and the stakes are high, detail is going to define you. Not only him but us, and you need that in-helmet preparation to do it. He was able to practice this week, and so that made the decision easier. Had he not been able to practice this week, that’s an element of the discussion that makes it more complex. That’s what I was referring to earlier in the week.”

Troy practiced last week, but was inactive on gameday. If Polamalu does indeed start tonight, it will be the 15th time he’s done so in the post-season.

Polamalu, Shazier, And Shamarko Thomas All Ruled Out For Jets Game

Coach Tomlin gave some injury updates today as he is obviously known to do on Tuesdays. S Troy Polamalu, LB Ryan Shazier, and S Shamarko Thomas have all already been ruled out for Sunday’s game at the N.Y. Jets.

Polamalu left the field hopping near the end of the first half of the Ravens game Sunday night. According to Tomlin today, it’s a knee sprain that will keep him out this week. “We’ll evaluate him at the top of next week and see where we are,” said Tomlin. This is the first game Troy will miss since week 12 of the 2012 season.

With Shamarko Thomas also being ruled out due to a hamstring injury, the depth at safety is a concern. Tomlin said that Ross Ventrone, who was out due to a hamstring injury last week, is questionable for the Jets game. “We’ll leave the light on for him particularly considering how thin we’re running in the secondary.”

Shazier missed 4 games this season due to a knee injury, and will miss this Sunday’s game after spraining his ankle Sunday night. He played 17 snaps against the Ravens offense before leaving the game in a walking boot.

Tomlin also said that CB Ike Taylor will have a CT scan on his surgically repaired arm today and will continue to practice on a limited basis.

Ben-Roethlisberger

Steelers Elect 2014 Team Captains

The Steelers players have selected their 2014 team captains. Ben Roethlisberger has been named the team captain on offense. This makes the 6th time the quarterback has been named captain. On defense, Troy Polamalu has been selected as team captain. Believe it or not, this is the first time Troy has been voted team captain. Last year, Brett Keisel and Ryan Clark shared the title.

For special teams, Shaun Suisham and Robert Golden have been named co-captains. The Steelers started last season without naming a special teams captain.

Jarvis Jones Returns To Practice And Other Participation Notes

Today is the last practice before the Steelers take the field in Metlife Stadium on Saturday. Out of the men who were questionable according to coach Tomlin earlier, OLB Jarvis Jones was back at practice today. Jones has been nursing a groin injury.

LB Ryan Shazier was still sidelined today which shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s impossible to say whether his knee is truly just a “boo boo” as Mike Tomlin says, or if it’s not something more serious. NT Steve McLendon is still out with a concussion and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was out as he recovers from a concussion as well.

WR Antonio Brown and S Troy Polamalu were given the day off. DE Cameron Heyward was also out today, presumably as a maintenance day as well. Lastly, OG Ramon Foster didn’t practice again today. While no specifics have been given about his absence, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was related to his finger. The lineman had an issue with it the other day in practice.

The Steelers are off tomorrow, and as Tomlin said earlier, those who are healthy will play. The availability of the questionable players will be an 11th hour decision according to Tomlin.

Polamalu, Taylor, And Zumwalt Present Today; One Rookie Absent

The Steelers wrapped up day 1 of mandatory mini-camp today. The men who missed all or most of voluntary OTA’s were in attendance today as expected. S Troy Polamalu, CB Ike Taylor, and LB Jordan Zumwalt were all present and accounted for. There was one rookie however who wasn’t present- Martavis Bryant.

Martavis Bryant, the Steelers 4th round selection, was reportedly home sick today after coming down with a virus yesterday. Markus Wheaton missed some of the final OTA practices, but participated fully today. Dri Archer, however, was sidelined about halfway through today’s practice with a bag of ice on his knee.

Hopefully Bryant’s illness doesn’t sideline him for the entire mini-camp. Rookies need every minute they can get, and as Coach Haley said earlier today, “he’s got a long way to go”.

“[Bryant’s] another rookie, so we’re not anointing him. He’s got a long way to go, because at the receiver position, there are a lot of subtle things that go on, but he’s big and fast and what sets him apart and should give him a chance to succeed is that he gets to top speed fast for a guy that big,” Haley said in an interview earlier today.

Mini-camp continues tomorrow and concludes on Thursday. The team then breaks until training camp begins July 25th.

[Video] Time Lapse Of Baron Batch Painting Troy Polamalu Tribute

As you probably already knew, former Steelers running back Baron Batch is a painter. A pretty awesome painter. Occasionally, he sells his art to help with a good cause. Recently Batch shared a behind the scenes look at the creation of his tribute to Troy Polamalu.

About the painting, the former 7th round pick said, “I played with Troy Polamalu in Pittsburgh, and if black and gold had a face…it would be his.” Here is the video of Batch painting Troy. Enjoy.

Breaking Down Troy Polamalu’s Contract Extension

The Steelers extended Troy Polamalu’s contract yesterday, keeping him under contract through 2016. The details of the extension weren’t immediately available, but I can break the down for you now. Steelers And Troy Polamalu Agree On Extension Through 2016

The Steelers have announced that they have extended Troy Polamalu’s contract through 2016. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. The team needs to free up cap space this year, and Troy was coming on the final year of his contract. His 2014 salary cap number was a whopping $10,887,500.

I’ll report the specific numbers when I have them over the next few days, but I expect his extension to be similar to Heath’s, in that his 2014 salary, or a big portion of it, was converted to a cash signing bonus. It’s difficult to speculate exactly how much it will free up, but I would think it has to be at least in the neighborhood of 4 to 5 million.
