Steelers Snap Counts Versus San Francisco

Here is the Steelers player participation data from yesterday’s stomping of the 49ers at Heinz Field. As you can see in the table below, the starting o-line played as an intact unit throughout the game (until the victory formation where Villanueva came in for Gilbert). QB Michael Vick put his helmet on for the first time this season.

On defense, S Will Allen was in for a whopping 90 plays. He hasn’t seen that many plays in a very long time. The OLB’s were pretty evenly rotated again this week. CB Ross Cockrell saw significant playing time and CB Brandon Boykin was eased in later in the game. Most likely due to being hampered by injury earlier in the week.

Steelers Snap Counts Versus New England

Here is the player participation data for the Steelers offense and defense from last night’s game in Foxborough. As you can see from the table below, the offensive line remained intact for the entire game. Villanueva was used mainly as a blocking TE (eligible receiver) in goal line situations.

Darrius Heyward-Bey was in for a whopping 43 plays. More action than he’s seen since week 13 of the 2013 season. Tyler Murphy was in for a handful of plays, and recorded his first career reception.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Steelers mixed things up quite a bit. The division of labor was spread across the outside linebackers, but James Harrison saw the most playing time among them. All of the safeties played, though Shamarko Thomas saw very little time on defense. For whatever reason, CB Brandon Boykin did not play last night.

Steelers Vs. Packers Snap Counts

Here is the player participation data from yesterday’s game at Heinz field. As you can see from the charts below, most of the offensive starters were in for 23 plays. Chris Hubbard replaced the injured Maurkice Pouncey at center, where he played for the remainder of the game. Bruce Gradkowski returned to game action after sitting out the first two preseason games due to a shoulder injury, but left the game after suffering an injury to his left hand. Landry Jones took his place and remained for the rest of the game.

On the defensive side of the ball, the division of labor was well spread, and the unit registered 6 sacks on the day. Dan McCullers made his return to preseason action. Holliman and Hemer saw significant drops in their participation from the previous week. Recently signed LB L.J. Fort was in for 7 defensive plays. One of which he sacked the QB.

Steelers Snap Counts Vs Panthers

Here are the player snap counts from last night’s preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. As you can see, Wesley Johnson received the most offensive playing time, as he subbed for Maurkice Pouncey.

Martavis Bryant was in for just a few plays before leaving with a shoulder injury. Landry Jones was the starting quarterback, and had the majority of the snaps under center, before being relieved by Brendon Kay. The results below are from the official gamebook, but if they prove to be inaccurate, I’ll post an update in a day or two.
