Steelers Do Some Restructuring; Brown Gets More Cash In 2015

The Steelers have restructured some contracts today. According to Adam Schefter, the team has restructured the contracts of Heath Miller, Antonio Brown, and Shaun Suisham.

The moves clear roughly $6 Mil in 2015 cap space. Schefter reports that the team made the moves to provide an offset for the number of injured players consuming cap space, and, while that may be partially true, it’s quite probable that the front office is trying to get their ducks in a row before locking up OT Kelvin Beachum prior to the season getting underway.

It appears that the Steelers did some type of traditional restructuring of Brown’s contract, while also moving forward $2 Mil of money that he was due in 2016, to give him a “raise” now. I speculated the team may make a similar move like this to “appease” Brown’s camp, who have been very much in the news regarding their hopes in getting more money for AB. I imagine they’ll be having more conversations when the season is over…

I’ll give a more detailed breakdown of these restructures when I get a little more information about the financials. About the “raise”, Antonio Brown said, “I’m extremely grateful and humbled.”

Suisham To IR, Stingily Waived/Injured, 2 Signed

As expected, the Steelers have placed K Shaun Suisham on Injured Reserve, officially ending his season before it began. RB Cam Stingily, who also had knee surgery yesterday, has been waived/injured. He’ll go to IR, too, after clearing waivers.

With the two available roster spots, the Steelers signed RB Braylon Heard and WR David Nelson.

Heard, 5′, 9″, 198 lbs, was with the Kentucky Wildcats last year after transferring from Nebraska. A situational back at UK, Heard is quick footed, but is often taken down easily. The UDFA RB rushed for 366 yds with 4 TD’s and had 108 yds on 21 receptions.

David Nelson is a veteran wide receiver who spent his first 3 years in Buffalo, and his last 2 in NY with the Jets. The Jets released him last year after they traded for Percy Harvin. Predominately used as a role player throughout his career, the 6’5, 215 lb receiver had his best season statistically in 2011, where he had 5 TD’s and 658 total receiving yards.

Taking A Look At The Steelers Replacement Kicking Candidates

The injury bug bit the Steelers Sunday night as steady kicker Shaun Suisham tore his ACL at the HOF game while trying to make a second-half tackle.

Suisham will be hard to replace. His specialized directional kicking and experience at the often tricky Heinz field has been an ace in the whole since 2010, making him the most accurate field-goal kicker in Steeler history. The 33 year old converted 59 of 64 field-goal tries over the past two years and just signed a new four year contract last August.

The Steelers are holding kicker workouts Tuesday in an effort to find a stop-gap replacement for Suisham. Among the invited are Garrett Hartley, Alex Henery, and Jay Feely. Veteran kickers Billy Cundiff and Shayne Graham should also be up for consideration.

Graham, 37, has been around the league. He’s been with a total of 14 teams, including the Steelers for one game in 2013 after a hamstring injury for Suisham.

Feely, 39, has is also a well traveled player, being with seven teams.

Henery seems to be a gamble. He was drafted in the 2011 NFL draft in the fourth round by the Eagles, but they cut him last August. The Lions picked him up in September, but cut him after he missed three field goals in an October loss to Buffalo.

Hartley and Cundiff both played with the Browns in the 2014 season.

One silver lining is the timing of the injury. Although the Steelers broke the norm and didn’t have any additional kickers in camp, they have a month before the regular season starts on September 10th to find a replacement for the season. Even then, the team can pick up a veteran after the season starts. Whomever wins the spot will need to also have the ability to kick off. Punters Brad Wing and Jordan Berry have no experience in that area.

Steelers To Host A Few Kickers Tomorrow

As you’d expect, the Steelers aren’t wasting any time trying to find a kicker to fill Shaun Suisham’s cleats. After learning the bad news from earlier today, the team has already reportedly scheduled a few workouts for tomorrow.

According to NFL Network, the Steelers will host Jay Feely, Alex Henery, and Garrett Hartley for workouts tomorrow.

Feely is 39 years old. The 14 year veteran was a free agent for much of last season before being signed by the Bears in December.

Henery is 27. He was cut by the Lions last October after missing 3 field goals in a close loss to the Bills. It wasn’t the first performance last season that had people questioning his confidence.

Hartley is 29 years old. He was signed by the Browns last year to replace Billy Cundiff. He did well there, but was released by the Browns in May.

None of these guys are really “that guy” you’re going to feel comfortable with when the game on the line from the 45 with 3 seconds left in late October, when the wind is blowing and it’s spitting freezing rain at Heinz Field.

Report: Suisham Needs Knee Surgery, Likely Out For Season

Ed Bouchette of the Post Gazette is reporting that K Shaun Suisham will be having knee surgery this week to repair his ACL and cartilage damage. If this is the case, he will most certainly be placed on Injured Reserve and be out for the entire 2015 season.

In light of this news, you can expect the Steelers to sign his replacement ASAP.

Report: Suisham Believes He Has Torn ACL

Last night K Shaun Suisham left the game early after suffering what Coach Tomlin later described as a potentially significant injury. Suisham, who was seen walking out of the locker room on crutches, is awaiting MRI results to determine the severity of his injury.

NFL’s Ian Rapoport reports this morning that the Steelers veteran is telling people he believes he has a torn ACL.

Since the team doesn’t have a backup Kicker, expect the Steelers to make some moves quickly to bring in a replacement leg.

Shaun Suisham Suffered A ‘Potentially Significant’ Knee Injury

Kicker Shaun Suisham left the game early after suffering what Coach Mike Tomlin later called a ‘potentially signifcant’ knee injury. Suisham appeared to sustain the injury while making a tackle after the kickoff to start the 2nd half. He limped to the locker room, and was later seen using crutches.

https://twitter.com/C_AdamskiTrib/status/630583404589936644

The injury is to his left (non-kicking) leg. There is no back up kicker, so if Suisham’s injury is significant, the team will need to bring someone in quickly. He will have testing done tomorrow, so we’ll have to wait and see just how serious it is.

The other two players injured tonight were OT Marcus Gilbert, and RB Cameron Stingily. Gilbert reportedly was poked in the eye, and his injury didn’t appear to be serious. Stingily injured his knee during the second half forcing him to leave the game. He is being evaluated.

Ben-Roethlisberger

Steelers Elect 2014 Team Captains

The Steelers players have selected their 2014 team captains. Ben Roethlisberger has been named the team captain on offense. This makes the 6th time the quarterback has been named captain. On defense, Troy Polamalu has been selected as team captain. Believe it or not, this is the first time Troy has been voted team captain. Last year, Brett Keisel and Ryan Clark shared the title.

For special teams, Shaun Suisham and Robert Golden have been named co-captains. The Steelers started last season without naming a special teams captain.

Breaking Down Shaun Suisham’s Contract Extension

The Steelers extended kicker Shaun Suisham last week. The contract details were not available when the extension was announced, but I can provide them for you now.

Suisham’s new deal contains $12.575 million in new money, and includes a $2.85 million guaranteed signing bonus. Suisham can also earn a $500,000 roster bonus in 2015. The deal should make Suisham the 10th highest paid kicker. Here is a breakdown of the contract by year.
Year, Base Salary, Prorated Bonus, Roster Bonus, Cap Hit, Dead Money

2014, “$855,000″,”$907,500″,”$0″,”$1,762,500”, “$3,187,500”

2015, “$2,595,000″,”$570,000″,”$500,000″,”$3.665,000”, “$2,280,000”

2016, “2,400,000”,”$570,000″,”$0″,”$2,970,000″, “$1,710,000”

2017, “$2,400,000″,”$570,000″,”$0″,”$2,970,000”, “$1,140,000”

2018, “2,400,000”,”$570,000″,”$0″,”$2,970,000″, “$570,000”
You may or may not agree, but the contract is a little on the high side. As you can see though, the team can move on from Suisham before the end of the contract without too much of a negative cap impact, should they feel the need to do so.

Steelers Sign K Shaun Suisham To 4 Year Contract Extension

The Steelers announced this morning that Kicker Shaun Suisham has been signed to a contract extension. The extension will keep Suisham under contract through the 2018 season.

Suisham was originally signed to a 4 year contract by the Steelers in 2011. Last year, the 32 year old kicker made 30 of 32 attempts, and was 8 for 8 from beyond the 40 yard mark.

Art Rooney II recently said that the team wanted to extend some players whose contracts were expiring soon, and Suisham would have been a free agent after this season. Other players who are potential extension candidates are CB Cortez Allen, RT Marcus Gilbert, LB Jason Worilds, and perhaps even Cam Heyward. Suisham’s contract details aren’t immediately available, but I’ll update when I know the specifics.
