Steelers Make Some Contract Moves To Clear Cap Space

The Steelers have restructured some contracts today to free up some salary cap room for the 2015 season.

According to Jason LaCanfora, the team restructured the contracts of Marcus Gilbert, Mike Mitchell, and Maurkice Pouncey. The total of the three transactions saves approximately $9.5 Mil in cap space, putting them approximately $10 Mil under the cap.

Gilbert’s restructure cleared apx. $3.76 Mil in 2015 cap space. His upcoming roster bonus and most of his base salary were rolled into a signing bonus.

According to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, Pouncey’s restructure isn’t official yet, and won’t be finalized until next week. Mitchell had a $2 Mil roster bonus coming up. Adding that to the maximum base salary available for restructuring would clear $2,441,250.

Going by LaCanfora’s numbers, we’re left with roughly $3.3 Mil with Pouncey’s contract. Pouncey also has a roster bonus due soon for the amount of $3.75 Mil. The maximum the team could clear by restructuring his contract is $3.804 Mil.

Tomlin On Mitchell’s Groin: “I’m Not Into The Excuse Making”

After the Steelers lost the wild card game to the Baltimore Ravens, Steelers safety Mike Mitchell told reporters that he had been playing with a groin tear.

https://twitter.com/AKinkhabwala/status/551604775239024640

Mitchell started training camp on the PUP list due to a groin injury he reportedly suffered during offseason training. This might explain some of Mitchell’s shortcomings on the field this year. Not the boneheaded penalties or obvious mental errors, but perhaps he took a bad angle or two that was a direct result of being hampered by a groin injury.

Earlier this week, Mitchell said he wasn’t trying to use it as an excuse. “It would be like having the brakes on your car not be right,” Mitchell said via ESPN. “I’m not making excuses, I’m not apologizing for anything. One thing we don’t do here in Pittsburgh is we don’t seek comfort. Everyone plays hurt.” He added, “I hate that this is even a story…we all play hurt. Everyone on the team has injuries so I’m no different than any other player.”

When asked about Mitchell’s groin yesterday during his press conference, Coach Tomlin took a stern tone. “I’m not into the excuse making,” said Tomlin. Adding, “I’m not gonna speculate on how it might have effected his performance.”

Earlier in the press conference, Tomlin listed Mitchell as one of the players who are on the short list for requiring off season surgery. Mitchell played 977 snaps for the Steelers defense this year, just 20 behind Worilds and Timmons, and was 3rd in regular season tackles with 57.

Classless Fans Rewarded Or: Steelers Wish They Could Ban Mike Mitchell From Twitter

It’s being reported by 93.7 The Fan, and multiple media outlets, that the Steelers have banned Safety Mike Mitchell from social media. The reported banning centers around a heated Twitter exchange after last night’s victory over the Titans.

First, some immature fan tells Mitchell what he thinks of him via Twitter during last night’s game.

https://twitter.com/Tomkatf14/status/534547850026573824

He allegedly gets a direct message (private message for you non-tweeters) reply from Mitchell. The Twitter user,  @Tomkatf14 tweeted a screenshot of the DM to different crew members of the 93.7 The Fan.

This wasn’t the only alleged fan who received a mean reply from Mitchell. Another user posted this DM, but after perusing their timeline, it’s pretty evident that they deleted their initial tweets to the Steelers Safety.

A couple things here. There’s a bit of bad journalism that deserves some finger pointing. Using the headline ‘Mike Mitchell tweets go kill yourself to fan’ is misleading, and probably purposely so. He didn’t “tweet” that to anyone, he private messaged it (allegedly). There’s a huge difference, and I’m sure the author, though unnamed in the article (oddly enough), is well aware of that. Furthermore, posting these screenshots of Mitchell’s DM’s without posting screenshots to show the context is a little bush league. (See what I did there?)

Look, I’m not condoning Mitchell’s actions. Any professional athlete should know that Twitter and Facebook are riddled with trollish fans, and if they can’t refrain from sinking down to their level, then they should stay away from social media altogether. Having said that, this guy (kid?) Tomkat is an ass. An ass who went whining to media members hoping to get attention- and he got it.

While the author might think Mitchell’s comments were “disturbing”, it may help he/she/robot to know that “kill yourself” is an extremely popular thing to say on social media. Not something a Pittsburgh Steeler should be messaging to a “fan”, but highly doubtful he meant it in the literal sense. From UrbanDictionary:

Lastly, the Steelers can’t “ban” Mitchell from using social media. They can ask him nicely to not use it or behave a certain way, but they don’t have the power to outright ban a player from using social media. The only authority the league has against social media usage prevents players from posting on social media 90 minutes before a game until following the conclusion of media interviews after a game. In theory, a team could use the personal conduct policy to discipline a player if they deemed their actions to be unbecoming.

Steelers Post Game Injury Updates

After tonight’s shut out against the Panthers, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media and gave some injury updates. There were two injuries of note according to Tomlin. WR Martavis Bryant has an AC (shoulder) sprain. Bryant left the game during the first quarter after getting shaken up on a play.

The other injured player Tomlin spoke of is CB Brice McCain. McCain left the game early with a groin injury. Mike Mitchell left the game with an apparent injury to his right leg. His return was described as probable, but he didn’t return to action after exiting with the injury.

Shazier Out, Zumwalt Returns, And Other Practice Participation Notes

The news on the injury front was mostly positive in Latrobe today. The Steelers got some guys back who have been out for a while. Mike Mitchell was activated from the PUP list, and LB Jordan Zumwalt returned for the first time since injuring his groin a week ago.

TE Rob Blanchflower also returned to practice today. The rookie tight end had suffered a high ankle sprain last week. I’m surprised he’s back so soon; that’s great news for him. LB Ryan Shazier was held out today for the knee injury he sustained yesterday. Hopefully that “little boo-boo”, as Tomlin put it yesterday, doesn’t keep him out for too long.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was out again today as he recovers from his concussion. C Maurkice Pouncey and CB Ike Taylor were both given maintenance days by Mike Tomlin. This is very unusual for Ike Taylor.

LB Jarvis Jones was out again today due to a groin injury. NT Steve McLendon was out for the third straight day. No specifics have been released about why McLendon has been out, but one reliable reporter said he had an illness.

Steelers Activate Mike Mitchell From PUP

Safety Mike Mitchell passed his physical and has been activated from the Active/PUP list today. Mitchell will do an AM walk through and is expected to be in full pads for practice this afternoon.

Mitchell started camp on the Active/PUP list with a groin injury he suffered while training. He had been steadily improving, and the announcement of his return was expected any day.

With Mitchell’s return, Robert Golden and Shamarko Thomas will see time on the back up squads, as Mitchell will step in on first team.

No New Injuries At Steelers Camp Today

In a surprising turn of events, there are no new groin injuries to report today. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Seriously though, there are no new injuries, and according to Mike Tomlin, the players who have been out are getting closer to returning to action.

“No new injuries today. A lot of guys continue to work themselves back in some form or fashion,” said Tomlin. Coach T. did confirm what was speculated earlier in the week: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has a concussion. No timeline was given for his return.

Heath Miller and Steve McLendon both were given the day off today. Tomlin was forthright about the nature of their absence. “Sometimes I give guys off to see others. We’re just team building here and that’s part of the process,” Tomlin told reporters earlier. Tomlin said that Mike Mitchell had a good workout today, and they’d take a look and see what he looks like tomorrow.

Jordan Zuwalt Injures Groin And Other Practice Participation Notes

Jordan Zumwalt sat out for the conclusion of practice today with his upper leg wrapped. According to Mike Tomlin, he was experiencing some tightness in his groin which will be evaluated. With the heavy rains in the area today, the field conditions were more conducive to potential groin pulls.

Martavis Bryant, who was sidelined yesterday with a groin injury, returned to full participation today. Le’Veon Bell sat out today due to tightness in his hamstring. With backs on backers out of the way, it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to return soon. CJ Goodwin also missed practice today due to a shoulder injury he sustained yesterday.

Coach Tomlin said the other men who are sidelined are working to get back soon. Alvester Alexander and Mike Mitchell had a good run with trainers this morning according to Tomlin.

Ramon Foster was expected to join the team today, but he did not attend practice today.

Mike Mitchell And Alvester Alexander Start Camp On PUP List

Mike Tomlin took the podium this afternoon for his first press conference in a while. During the brief meeting, coach Tomlin revealed that safety Mike Mitchell and running back Alvester Alexander will start training camp on the PUP list. Both of the men have groin injuries, and neither of them seem to be serious.

“We’re looking at about a week or so there, but we’ll monitor him to day to day,” said Tomlin about Mitchell’s injury. Alexander’s time frame is similar according to coach Tomlin. “He’s really in a similar circumstance. We’ve been monitoring both situations, and it’s nothing new to us, but obviously it’s not the type of start those guys are looking for. When they’re healthy and ready to go obviously we’ll put them back in the mix with the rest of them.”

Mitchell injured his groin while training. There was no word on how Alexander injured his. Last year the team opened camp with 4 players on the Active/PUP list, at least two of them serious, so this is an improvement in that regard. While we definitely wish Mitchell was available to start immediately, I wouldn’t be too concerned about Mitchell’s groin just yet. Hopefully he’s ready for action soon, and the groin isn’t a lingering issue for him.

Steelers To Sign FA Safety Mike Mitchell

According to league sources, the Steelers are signing former Panthers safety Mike Mitchell. Mitchell confirms this on Twitter.

Mitchell is listed as a strong safety, but played most of 2013 at free safety after Charles Godfrey suffered an achilles injury. Mitchell was drafted by the Raiders in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft. He signed a one year deal with the Panthers last year for $1 Mil, with $250 K guaranteed.

Last year, Mitchell totaled 4 interceptions, 3 sacks, and 45 solo tackles. According to ProFootballFocus, Mitchell was tied at the top of the list of safeties with the most missed tackles at 18, though he also is considered one of the best blitzing safeties, and his coverage skills are pretty good. Last year, 1 touchdown was allowed in his coverage area.

According to Adam Schefter, Mitchell’s contract is for 5 years, and totals $25 Mil.
