Steelers Do Some Restructuring; Brown Gets More Cash In 2015

The Steelers have restructured some contracts today. According to Adam Schefter, the team has restructured the contracts of Heath Miller, Antonio Brown, and Shaun Suisham.

The moves clear roughly $6 Mil in 2015 cap space. Schefter reports that the team made the moves to provide an offset for the number of injured players consuming cap space, and, while that may be partially true, it’s quite probable that the front office is trying to get their ducks in a row before locking up OT Kelvin Beachum prior to the season getting underway.

It appears that the Steelers did some type of traditional restructuring of Brown’s contract, while also moving forward $2 Mil of money that he was due in 2016, to give him a “raise” now. I speculated the team may make a similar move like this to “appease” Brown’s camp, who have been very much in the news regarding their hopes in getting more money for AB. I imagine they’ll be having more conversations when the season is over…

I’ll give a more detailed breakdown of these restructures when I get a little more information about the financials. About the “raise”, Antonio Brown said, “I’m extremely grateful and humbled.”

No New Injuries At Steelers Camp Today

In a surprising turn of events, there are no new groin injuries to report today. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Seriously though, there are no new injuries, and according to Mike Tomlin, the players who have been out are getting closer to returning to action.

“No new injuries today. A lot of guys continue to work themselves back in some form or fashion,” said Tomlin. Coach T. did confirm what was speculated earlier in the week: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has a concussion. No timeline was given for his return.

Heath Miller and Steve McLendon both were given the day off today. Tomlin was forthright about the nature of their absence. “Sometimes I give guys off to see others. We’re just team building here and that’s part of the process,” Tomlin told reporters earlier. Tomlin said that Mike Mitchell had a good workout today, and they’d take a look and see what he looks like tomorrow.

A Breakdown Of Heath Miller’s Contract Extension

It was reported that the Steelers and Heath Miller agreed on contract rework earlier this week, but the details were not available. As I said previously, it was indeed an extension that lowered his 2014 cap number. He is now under contract with the Steelers through 2016. Here is a before and after of the numbers.
Player, Year, Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Salary Cap Number

“Miller, Heath”, 2014, “$6,020,000”, “$3,446,500”, “$9,466,500”
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Player, Year, Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Salary Cap Number

“Miller, Heath”, 2014, “$1,020,000”, “$5,113,166”, “$6,133,166”
“Miller, Heath”, 2015, “$4,000,000”, “$1,666,666”, “$5,666,666”
“Miller, Heath”, 2016, “$4,000,000”, “$1,666,666”, “$5,666,668”
As you can see, the extension lowers Heath’s salary cap hit for 2014, clearing $3,333,334 in cap space to be exact.

Report: Steelers Rework Heath Miller’s Contract

According to Ian Rapoport, the Steelers have reworked Heath Miller’s contract to create needed cap space for 2014.

2014 is the final year of  Heath’s contract, so a traditional restructuring isn’t an option.  I posted previously that I expect the Steelers to extend Heath’s contract. The Steelers restructured Miller’s contract  in September to make additional cap room for the 2013 season.

Traditional restructuring reduces the player’s base salary and rolls it over into a signing bonus, thus reducing the cap number for that year. Since Heath is in the final year of his contract, obviously his salary cannot be pushed forward without extending the duration of his contract.

Here are Heath’s 2014 numbers before today’s moves:

Player, Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Salary Cap Number

“Miller, Heath”, “$6,020,000”, “$3,446,500”, “$9,466,500”

I’ll post Heath’s contract details when more information becomes available.

[Gif] Heath Miller Shields Le’Veon Bell From Cameras

After Le’Veon Bell received a traumatic helmet to helmet blow that rendered him unconscious on the field, Heath Miller showed what Steelers fans already knew- that he’s a class act.

Miller went to the camera man in the endzone and covered the lens with his hand. Afterwards, Heath went right to the referee to get Bell’s helmet. As if you needed another reason to love Heath.

Steelers Vs Bears Injury Report

The injury report for the Bears game is out, and based on reports, it’s looking more and more like Heath will play on Sunday. He may even start.

Out: Cortez Allen.

Questionable: Le’Veon Bell. Bell practiced again today, and isn’t ruling out playing on Sunday. How his foot responds to today’s practice will be a big deciding factor.

Probable: Curtis Brown, Jarvis Jones, Brett Keisel, Steve McLendon, & Heath Miller.

For the Bears:

Probable: Brandon Marshall, Kyle Long, and Martellus Bennet.

Questionable: Charles Tillman.

Steelers Wednesday Practice Participation Report

First and foremost- Heath Miller participated fully for the first time since December. Heeeeeeath. OK, now that I got that out of the way, here’s the full list from today’s practice:

Did Not Participate:

Cortez Allen, Brett Keisel (calf strain).

Limited:

Le’Veon Bell (foot), Jarvis Jones (heel).

Full:

Curtis Brown, Steve McLendon, and Heath Miller.

Barring a setback, it is a very real possibility that Heath Miller is on the starting lineup against the Bears Sunday night.

Steelers Salary Cap & Steelers Contracts | Heath Gets Restructured

Update- See all of the Steelers contracts and Steelers salary cap related news here:  Steelers Salary Cap

The team restructured Heath Miller’s contract yesterday to free up cap space for recent signings. Going into Tuesday, the Steelers only had approximately $1.5 million in available cap space, so the team really had little choice but to restructure after getting hit by the injury tsunami on Sunday. None of the three players who required surgery this week had split contracts that would provide cap relief to the team in case of injury.

$3,187,500 of Heath’s $5,162,000 2013 base salary was converted into a prorated signing bonus. The move freed up just under $1.6 Mil of cap room this year. Heath’s salary cap numbers for 2013 and 2014 are as follows:
Here are the financials for the signings the team made this week:

Base Salary Cap Number
Jonathan Dwyer~  $630,000 $592,941
Fernando Velasco~ $715,000 $522,353
Shayne Graham~  $940,000 $522,353

The three signings combined cost the team $1,637,647, so before restructuring Heath Miller’s contract, the signings were not possible. As of right now, the team has $1,385,253 in salary cap space, and that includes restructuring Heath.

Steelers Vs. Titans Injury Report

The Steelers injury report for week one is out and it looks like this:

Out: Le’Veon Bell (foot)

Doubtful: Heath Miller (knee)

Probable: Jarvis Jones (chest), Will Johnson (hamstring), Brett Keisel (not injury related)

Will Johnson has been limited in practice this week due to his hamstring injury. Johnson told media today that he wants to play Sunday, but it will ultimately be Tomlin’s decision. No details were given about Keisel’s situation.

For the Titans:

Out: LB Gooden (ankle)

Doubtful: FB Quinn Johnson (quad)

Questionable: OT David Stewart (calf) and OLB Akeem Ayers (ankle)

Heath Miller Activated From PUP

The Steelers announced that they have activated Heath Miller from the Physically Unable To Preform list today. This is a great news and reinforces the fact that Heath’s rehabilitation was progressing ahead of schedule. If Heath had remained on the PUP list, he would have had to sit out the first six weeks, keeping him out of team activities until the first week of October. This way, Miller can begin practicing with team right now, and can be worked back into the line up as soon as his knee allows.
