Ben Roethlisberger Named AFC Offensive Player Of The Week

Ben Roethlisberger was named the AFC’s offensive player of the week after his record setting game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The quarterback’s impressive performance set a new single game franchise record in completions (40), as well as records for passing yards (522) and passing touchdowns (6). The victory also earned Roethlisberger his 100th career regular season win in his 150th start. Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady are the only other quarterbacks in NFL history to win 100 games in their first 150 starts.

Ben also became the first quarterback in league history to throw for over 500 yards in more than one game. While his performance was 32 yards shy of the all time single game passing record, it tied him for fourth with Boomer Esiason.

This is the tenth time in Ben’s career that he’s won AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Steelers Elect 2014 Team Captains

The Steelers players have selected their 2014 team captains. Ben Roethlisberger has been named the team captain on offense. This makes the 6th time the quarterback has been named captain. On defense, Troy Polamalu has been selected as team captain. Believe it or not, this is the first time Troy has been voted team captain. Last year, Brett Keisel and Ryan Clark shared the title.

For special teams, Shaun Suisham and Robert Golden have been named co-captains. The Steelers started last season without naming a special teams captain.

Shazier Gets A “Little Boo Boo” And Other Injury Notes

Steelers rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier got a little banged up during a red zone drill today. After a big hit on Le’Veon Bell, Shazier limped off the field where trainers attended to him, and wrapped his right knee in ice. Afterward, Shazier was standing and walking on the sideline, and didn’t go to the lockers.

After practice, Coach Tomlin told reporters that there were no significant injuries today- just bumps and bruises. When asked about Ryan Shazier, Mike Tomlin said he got “a little boo-boo”. Apparently Tomlin isn’t concerned about it.

For the defense, Troy Polamalu, Steve McLendon, Jordan Zumwalt, and Hebron Fangupo were in shorts and didn’t participate. Mike Mitchell of course is still out on the PUP list.

On offense, Ben Roethlisberger and Rob Blanchflower were out for today’s activities. According to Tomlin, there is no update on punter Adam Podlesh.

Steelers Will Not Be Extending Roethlisberger Until After This Season

It’s widely known that the Steelers don’t normally negotiate with players once training camp begins, and certainly not when the season starts. The team definitely could have extended Ben Roethlisberger this offseason had they chose to do so, but team president Art Rooney II says the team will address his contract after the 2014 season.

“I met with Ben shortly before we did the Maurkice Pouncey signing just to make sure Ben understood where we were with our intentions as far as a contract extension for him,” said Rooney via Steelers.com. “I just didn’t want him to feel like we were moving ahead with other players without any communication.”

So, sometime before June 12th, the Steelers reached out to Ben and his agent Ryan Tollner to let them know they wouldn’t be extending his contract this year.

“And so I talked to Ben, and then we talked with his agent Ryan Tollner about where we are and the fact we intend on addressing Ben’s contract situation after the season, so that we could address a number of players who were going into their last year in 2014. I think Ben understands that’s our intention and the way we’d like to proceed. I think we had a good conversation.”

The impact of a Roethlisberger extension on this year’s salary cap would have been minimal. The cap is projected to increase for at least the next couple years, and according to Rooney, that had an influence on the team’s decision to wait to extend him. “We believe the cap will go up again next year,” said Rooney, “and so from a cap planning standpoint, next year will be a better situation for us to address a franchise quarterback type of contract.”

Mr. Rooney added that maintaining a winning roster for their franchise quarterback was paramount.

“The other key thing is that Ben wants to be part of a winning team, to be in a position to compete for championships, and he understands that in order to do that we need to try to keep as many of the other players around as we can. So, addressing the players who are going into the final years of their contracts in 2014 makes sense. That’s what he and I talked about.

“We also talked to Ryan, just so that there was communication with him as well, so that they understood the direction in which we wanted to proceed. We wanted to make sure they were understanding that we do want to make a commitment, that we do want to address Ben’s contract next year. It’s not a situation where we’re saying we want to put it on hold. We did assure him that next year is the time frame in which we want to address it.”

One thing is very likely:  the value of Ben’s contract extension will be much higher after this season.

Ben Roethlisberger Is 31st On NFL’s Top 100 List

The NFL Network continued it’s Top 100 series this week, and for what it’s worth, Ben Roethlisberger came in at #31. The rankings are based on a poll of current players. The premise is that the player’s peers vote based on their perception of how well he played last year, and how well he’ll do in the upcoming season.

Last year, Big Ben was ranked 61st on the NFL’s Top 100 list. Perhaps they polled less Ravens players this year, or perhaps the group they polled just paid more attention to Roethlisberger’s game than the previous year’s polling sample. I’m kidding around of course. I have no idea what thought process they use to determine their rankings. Rob Gronkowski ranked 41st, and he only played in 7 games this year, some of which he was limited in.

For what it’s worth, here’s how he ranked on the Top 100 over the past few years.

2011: 41

2012:  30

2013: 61

2014: 31

Here are the other quarterbacks who have been in the Top 100 so far this year:

Matt Stafford: 100

Colin Kaepernick: 81

Tony Romo: 71

Nick Foles: 70

Joe Flacco: 58

Not that these rankings mean anything, but looking at it objectively, I think they ranked Ben pretty accurately this year. Not all agree with me, though.

What do you think? Did they get it right this year, or did they miss the mark?

Todd Haley: ‘Ben’s Running The Show’

The Steelers 3 day mandatory minicamp kicks off today. The padless sessions are referred to as “baby training camp” by cornerback Ike Taylor, and aside from the important football practices that go on, they’re the first opportunity for us to hear from assistant coaches publicly.

Todd Haley spent some time talking about quarterback Ben Roethlisberger with the media today. The two were once the focus of a media magnifying glass, and they’re supposed rocky relationship may have been the most overblown narrative in the history of Pittsburgh sports. Either way, you’d never know that was the case while listening to Todd Haley talk today.

Haley attributes Ben’s leadership and mental focus to much of the team’s turnaround last season. “In those low times the true leadership of the team shows, and some of those low Wednesdays when we came out for practice and were 2-6, it could have been easy to just go through the motions,” said Haley via the Steelers website. “But in those situations you saw Ben take charge, and a lot of those practices that were make-or-break practices from the coaches’ perspective, you could see there was no quit. We kept fighting until the end when we were watching Kansas City miss the field goal against San Diego in overtime in that last game of the season that kept us out of the playoffs. Even though it was a rough, tough year and nobody was satisfied with it, a lot of good came out of it that should help us moving forward.”

The Steelers offense looked like a well oiled machine for much of second half of the 2013 season. Haley hopes to build on that success, but with new faces at WR and RB this year, Haley knows that all starts with Ben Roethlisberger’s leadership.

“They all see him as the leader of the team. It’s very clear that when Ben speaks, or he’s on the field for his set of plays in practice, he’s running the show,” Haley continued. “Whether guys are on the field with Ben or not, they’ve all got their ears perked up and they’re listening to anything that he says. The entire group will look to the quarterback always, and we’re fortunate we have a guy who has played well in a lot of games and played well in a lot of big games. And because he’s not going to be satisfied unless we’re playing in the final game, the Super Bowl, the entire group, being a younger group, will lean on Ben all the way until we get there.”

Summer hasn’t even begun yet, but there’s plenty to be excited about come September.

The Pirates game was rain delayed tonight, but earlier in the day, Ben Roethlisberger was at PNC Park working on his swing.

Abbey Way of 93.7 The Fan shared this brief video of the Steelers quarterback swinging for the fences this afternoon.

While the video is very short, it’s always fun to get random peaks at what players are doing when they’re not wearing a Steelers helmet. It’s also refreshing to see Ben wearing the gloves, and not having it turn into the topic of controversy.

Ben Roethlisberger Blows Off Steam In Georgia With His Line

Ben Roethlisberger is working on some male bonding with his starting offensive linemen in Georgia this week. Ben, Maurkice Pouncey, Marcus Gilbert, Kelvin Beachum, Mike Adams, Ramon Foster, and David DeCastro flew down in a private jet yesterday. While the exact location wasn’t disclosed, I can only presume that they are visiting Lake Oconee, GA, where the quarterback owns a lake home.

Thanks to Ramon Foster via Twitter, we get to have a personal look at their excursion.

The team will reconvene on Tuesday, May 27th for OTA’s, so this week is the last hurrah to get some R&R and bonding in before workouts get more serious.

Phase Two Of Steelers Offseason Program Is Underway

Phase two of the Steelers off-season workout program has gotten underway this week. There are plenty of familiar faces at the “voluntary” workouts, and a few that aren’t so familiar.

https://twitter.com/PaduaFootball/status/463667222527750144

According to the collective bargaining agreement, phase two of the off-season program may last 3 weeks. The Steelers will carry out the second phase of their workouts until Memorial Day weekend.  The team will hold their rookie orientation next weekend, May 16-18th.

During this phase of the program, all members of the coaching staff are allowed to be on the field with the players. During the first phase, only strength and conditioning coaches were allowed on the field. While no “offense vs defense” type scrimmages or even 1 on 1 drills are allowed, coaches can run positional and individual drills with the players, as well as “perfect play” drills.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said it felt good to get back on the field. “Today we threw, we did some organized stuff where we could actually have coaches on the field,” he told the crew on 97.3 the fan this morning.  “We’re only allowed 45 minutes, but we did do some no huddle plays just to get the verbiage back, and get the new guys learning some stuff. It felt really good to get out there and take some snaps from Pouncey.”

Coach Tomlin told reporters yesterday that Sean Spence had a clean bill of health, and Nick Williams had positive reviews in his rehabilitation, but couldn’t comment on their progress until they “hit the grass”. They are hitting the grass now. Granted, they won’t be participating in contact with pads for several weeks, but the coaching staff will be able to begin the process of evaluating their recoveries this week.

Roethlisberger: ‘No Extension Talks Have Been Brought To My Attention’

Ben Roethlisberger was on 97.3 The Fan this morning with Cook and Poni, talking about his off-season and the NFL draft. When the conversation shifted to the status of his contract extension, Roethlisberger said that extension talks haven’t been significant enough to be brought to his attention.

“I think there’s always a chance, but I don’t know how realistic it is, because there’s so many other big needs, so I don’t know that there’s any real serious talks, if there is, I haven’t been informed of it,” said Roethlisberger. He added, “I think it’s probably just been some small talk, like, let’s talk later, let’s wait to deal, things like that. So, I’m not getting…it’s hard for me to really speculate what they’re doing kind of behind closed doors. It’s nothing that’s been significant enough to be brought to my attention.”

While this shouldn’t come as a surprise, it does add some detail to what Ben’s agent told ESPN a couple weeks ago. Like Steelers GM Kevin Colbert indicated in his press conference yesterday, the surprise gift the team received in salary cap room this off-season made their financial decisions much easier. Extending Roethlisberger would have been much higher on the Steelers agenda had the salary cap not been set so much higher than projected.

Big Ben reiterated today that he wanted to be with the Steelers for the rest of his career, and that he feels he’s got a lot left in the tank. “I feel great, I feel like I’m in great shape…I feel really good. I feel at this rate I could play for quite a few more years. I feel like I could get 5 or 6- 7 more years out of this arm and these legs.

“Ultimately it’s up to the Steelers and the good Lord whatever they want to do. I don’t want to go anywhere obviously, I love it here in Pittsburgh,  this is home for me. I want to finish my career here. So, however that gets done is all that matters to me because I bleed black and gold.”
