DeAngelo Williams And Vontaze Burfict Got Into A Twitter Fight

DeAngelo Williams was on ESPN today. He made the rounds…SportsCenter, First Take, etc…

He even did some dancing.

At some point during his interviews, the veteran running back said that the Bengals were going to be his rival this year.

“For me, my rival throughout my year will be the Cincinnati Bengals,” Williams told ESPN. “I don’t think there was any doubt in my mind if AB was not interfered on or hit the way he was hit, however you want to label it – there’s no doubt we go on and give the Broncos hell.”

Essentially, it seems, Williams is saying that Burfict’s hit on AB kept them from the Super Bowl.

Word got out to Burfict at some point today and he took to Twitter to put Williams in his place.

I’ll give Burfict credit…he spells way better than I would have guessed. After the brief exchange, his mentions skyrocketed, most of which were from Steelers fans.

[Video] Pacman Jones Issues Apology To Antonio Brown

Not that it matters. Not that anyone should care what Jones thinks or says…but, the Bengals cornerback stayed true to his word today and issued an apology to Antonio Brown regarding his “injury faking” remarks. Jones swore that Brown was faking and that he’d be playing Sunday.

Fernando Velasco Signs With The Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers have signed former Steelers center Fernando Velasco, the team announced this evening.

https://twitter.com/Panthers/status/492062842602807297

The free agent center was signed by the Steelers last September after Maurkice Pouncey suffered a season ending injury during week one against Tennessee. The former Titans starter stepped in and exceeded the expectations of many fans and members of the media. He was placed on Injured Reserve after suffering an achilles injury in November.

Last year when Velasco didn’t make the Titans final roster, then Head Coach Mike Munchak said, “Fernando’s a guy who grew up with me as a line coach, so you know how I felt about him.” He went on to say that money wasn’t part of the reason he was released. With Munchak leading the Steelers offensive line this year, it’s not hard to imagine that his influence was a big factor in Velasco not being re-signed.

Jermichael-Finley

Jermichael Finley: ‘Steelers Made Me A Couple Offers’

Free agent tight end Jermichael Finley is playing the waiting game right now. The former Packers tight end had two vertebrae fused last fall after suffering a spinal contusion in a game against the Browns. Having been cleared to play by his doctor, he’s now waiting for training camp injuries to make his stock go up.

A couple months ago, the Steelers were rumored to be interested in Finley. The Steelers team neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Maroon performed Finley’s neck surgery, and gave him the all clear to play back in May. In an interview with USA Today, Finley revealed that the Steelers went as far as to make him a couple offers. “Pittsburgh have showed me a couple deals, but we all know the money ain’t what it’s supposed to be,” said Finley.

What Finley thinks the money is supposed to be is anyone’s guess. The Steelers certainly weren’t going to make a large offer to a player whose medical carries such a risk. The Seahawks and Patriots had Finley in for visits, and the Packers remain interested in the veteran tight end. In a follow up interview, Finley elaborated somewhat on his contractual expectations. When asked if he had a number in mind, he said: “Without a doubt. It’s going to be tough. I ain’t going to go back for mediocre (money). I ain’t going back for nothing less. I can get a ton of money tax-free with nobody taking nothing off the top, Uncle Sam. It’s going to be a tough situation. I’ve still got to work out, I’ve still got to prepare and I’ve still got to be ready to go. But at the end of the day, when a team calls, it’s going to be strictly business.”

The tax free money he’s referring to is an insurance payout that he could potentially receive if he doesn’t return to football. Here’s what Finley told Sports Illustrated about the policy shortly after his injury.

“My agent and financial advisers have always preached the importance of disability insurance to me. As athletes, we often feel invincible, which is why it is so important to have advisers who you can trust and who can also take the emotion out of any situation. I don’t feel the pressure that I see many athletes do because I’ve taken their advice. I currently have a $10 million insurance policy in place. If this injury prevents me from ever playing football again, I will be able to collect on $10 million tax-free. For me, this is the equivalent of making another $16 million or $17 million in pre-tax salary. While money has absolutely nothing to do with my decision to play, I can sleep at night knowing that regardless of what happens, my family is financially secure forever—maybe the biggest odds I’ll ever overcome. Disability insurance is never a fun conversation, and writing those annual checks to protect myself is tough. But now, more than ever, I understand the importance of protecting yourself, protecting your family, and protecting your future earnings.”

If he isn’t able to play in four games before October 20th of this year, Finley can file a claim to collect on the disability policy. Without seeing the policy it’s impossible to know, but having been cleared by his neurosurgeon and turning down contract offers would seem to complicate matters.

Mike-Webster

Sony To Film Mike Webster Movie In Pittsburgh Starring Will Smith

Sony Pictures plans to use the city of Pittsburgh as the backdrop for their upcoming big budget film. The movie is titled “Game Brain”, and is a drama focusing on the NFL concussion controversy. Hall of Fame center “Iron” Mike Webster, who died at the age of 50 in 2002, is reportedly the primary focus of the movie.

Webster earned 4 super bowl rings, 9 Pro Bowl nominations, and 9 All Pro selections during his 15 years with the Steelers. While the Steelers don’t officially retire jersey numbers, Webster’s #52 has not been reissued since his retirement. Resisting the urge to go off on a tangent here, but Mike Webster deserves more notoriety for his accolades and his tenure as the anchor of the Steelers offensive line. He had the longest career as a Pittsburgh Steeler, with Hines Ward’s 14 years coming in at a close second.

The story of Webster’s final years is a sad one. The retired center suffered from amnesia, dementia, and depression, as well as several other physical impairments from the abuse his body endured over his long NFL career. Aside from the physical and mental issues the hall of famer battled, he was also reportedly homeless and living in his pick up truck.

Mike Webster bought himself a Taser gun, used that on himself to treat his back pain, would zap himself into unconsciousness just to get some sleep. Mike Webster lost all his money, or maybe gave it away. He forgot. A lot of lawsuits. Mike Webster forgot how to eat, too. Soon Mike Webster was homeless, living in a truck, one of its windows replaced with a garbage bag and tape.

Webster’s story was thrust back into the national spotlight last fall when it was featured in the Frontline special “League Of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis”. You can watch the full video here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/league-of-denial/

Mike Webster is featured mainly towards the beginning.

Back to the Game Brain movie…Will Smith is slated to star in the film. He will play Dr. Bennet Omalu, the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Webster and the man who coined the acronym CTE. Omalu also performed tests on the brains of former Steelers linemen Terry Long and Justin Strzelczyk during his CTE research. About being portrayed by Will Smith in the movie, Omalu issued a statment saying that I’m “humbled that my hard work and contribution to the advancement of science is being recognized.”

The state of Pennsylvania awarded “Game Brain” $14.4 million in film tax credits, according to the Pennsylvania Film Office via the Trib. A portion of that money was originally awarded to Legendary Pictures, but filming had to be postponed. Steelers minority owner Thomas Tull is the founder and CEO of Legendary Pictures.

Terry-Bradshaw

Too Many Are Quick To Judge Terry Bradshaw

Terry Bradshaw has been taking a lot of heat this week. It seems that a large portion of the Steelers fanbase, and some in the media, are upset that the Blonde Bomber didn’t attend Chuck Noll’s funeral. According to Starkey and Mueller of 93.7 The Fan, Terry Bradshaw “in no way showed up to the viewing or the funeral to pay his respects”. To further add fuel to the fire, Starkey shared a quote from former Steelers public relations man Joe Gordon about Terry Bradshaw. The message he shared about Bradshaw from Gordon read, “He’s the most insincere person I’ve ever known.” Why Gordon would offer that…I have no idea.

There’s another part to the story. Steelers legend Jack Lambert, who is notoriously private, didn’t attend the funeral. Lambert did reportedly make private arrangements to meet with Chuck Noll’s wife. Here’s the skinny on that:

“He [Jack] called Joe Gordon over the weekend and said he wanted to sit down and talk with Marianne Noll, Chuck’s wife. So Sunday, it was arranged that Jack Lambert would talk with Marianne Noll at 1:30, and sure enough, Joe Gordon showed up at the funeral home, and at 1 o’clock, Jack Lambert was sitting outside in his truck, presumably having driven in from Kittanning, which I think is where he lives up there, sitting in his truck waiting. And he had a chance to have an audience, have a nice talk with Marianne Noll for about 15 to 20 minutes and then left and drove back home before anybody else came.”

That’s such a Jack Lambert move. Rogue yet classy. Honestly, it’s so Jack Lambert it’s exactly how you might imagine the hall of famer paying his respects if you hadn’t heard the story. While the two have nothing to do with each other, sharing what Lambert did feeds some of the negativity for Terry’s lack of attendance.

People grieve in different ways, and however Terry Bradshaw chose to pay his respects/send his condolences, is really no one’s business. This and other stories circulating about the former quarterback paint a picture of indifference about Chuck Noll’s passing, and that’s just not the case.

After his one man show “Americas Favorite Dumb Blonde” in Pittsburgh last weekend, the former quarterback said some words of condolence about his former coach, and sang a tearful song of tribute to him. You can watch part of that in the video below (the song’s not included in the video).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d7i7hixl0Q

Ultimately, I think many people expected to see all the Steelers greats from the ’70s dynasty serving as pallbearers at Coach Noll’s funeral, with Terry Bradshaw standing across from Mean Joe (who was a pallbearer). It may be easy for us to pass judgement on Bradshaw for being absent, but as spectators, we should all try to reserve judgement on those who have suffered a personal loss.

Ben Roethlisberger Pirates

[Video] Ben Roethlisberger At Pirates Batting Practice

The Pirates game was rain delayed tonight, but earlier in the day, Ben Roethlisberger was at PNC Park working on his swing.

Abbey Way of 93.7 The Fan shared this brief video of the Steelers quarterback swinging for the fences this afternoon.

While the video is very short, it’s always fun to get random peaks at what players are doing when they’re not wearing a Steelers helmet. It’s also refreshing to see Ben wearing the gloves, and not having it turn into the topic of controversy.

Defense Rests In Mike Adams Stabbing Trial

According to multiple media outlets, the defense has rested their case in the stabbing trial of Mike Adams. Kevin Colbert, who was subpoenaed by defense attorneys, did not have to testify in the courtroom. Instead, according to the Tribune, part of Mike Adams’ contract was introduced as evidence.

While Colbert did not testify, the Steelers head of security Jack Kearney did. Kearney, who is also an Allegheny County sheriff’s lieutenant, testified earlier in the trial that he retrieved Mike Adams’ truck the morning after the stabbing, and brought it to the Steelers facilities. Inside, Kearney said there was a soda and half of a sandwich, which would seem to corroborate part of Mike Adams’ story.

Attorneys for the defendants Dquay Means, Michael Paranay and Jerrell Whitlock were said to be mulling the decision to summon an employee from the restaurant next to the crime scene, to testify about their surveillance cameras. Yesterday, Homicide Detective Robert Shaw testified that there was no usable footage from the restaurant’s surveillance system.

Ryan Clark

Antonio Brown And Ryan Clark: An Off-Season Drama

Antonio Brown didn’t like what Ryan Clark has said about the team in recent months, and Ryan Clark didn’t like that Antonio Brown didn’t like it. In an interview with Tribune reporter Alan Robinson, the Steelers wide receiver shared some of his thoughts on Clark’s recent musings in the media.

“When you see things like that, it shows you how guys feel when they’re not part of the team anymore,” Brown said regarding some of Clark’s comments. “It’s a form of bitterness or taking a shot at the team because you’re not there anymore.” Brown went on to say that comments like Clark’s show a lack of recent camaraderie that the team needs to improve on. Mainly, Brown is referring to Clark’s openness about his teammates using marijuana.

“When you see people taking shots who were on the same team and wearing the same jerseys, that’s a sign of not having that team camaraderie. That’s something we need to get back, something we haven’t had for the past two years.” Brown went on to say that Clark’s behavior likely stems from his affiliation with ESPN. “He’s getting into his career as a reporter and trying to get those things in the works,” Brown told the Trib. “I don’t think he meant any harm taking those shots to players as individuals, I just think he was trying to make pointers and make himself sound smart on ESPN.”

Well, it didn’t take long for Ryan Clark to respond to Brown’s statements. Shortly after the article was published, and the somewhat sensational headline grew legs on social media channels, Clark took to Twitter to share his opinion.

At first, Clark doesn’t seem bothered by Brown’s feelings, but in the span of a few minutes, his tone changes rather drastically. Clark isn’t new to sharing his candid feelings on Twitter. The former Steelers safety recently returned to Twitter after deleting his account last year, due to his sometimes blunt opinions not sitting well with certain fans.

After spending a couple months on the free agent market, Clark signed a one year deal with the Washington Redskins last month. Before signing with the Redskins, many people speculated that he was not going to return to playing football, but rather take on a full time analyst gig.

What do you think? Is Antonio Brown right? Are Clark’s opinions due to bitterness, or are they just said in effort to get attention on ESPN?
