Jordan Dangerfield

Safety Jordan Dangerfield Released From Practice Squad

The Steelers have released S Jordan Dangerfield from the practice squad today. Dangerfield was cut to make room for the addition of CB Kevin Fogg.

Dangerfield was with the team during preseason, and showed some potential against the NY Giants. The team brought him back a month ago to add some secondary depth to the practice squad. I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t see him again in the future.

Steelers Sign CB Kevin Fogg To Practice Squad

The Steelers have signed CB Kevin Fogg to the practice squad. I reported earlier that Fogg was in for a workout, and you can see more about him here. His agent confirmed the news on Twitter this afternoon.

The team will have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for the addition.

Earlier I mentioned that the Steelers had other unnamed players in for tryouts today, and I can provide an update on one of them. CB Anthony Gaitor was also in for a workout. Gaitor was drafted by the Bucs in 2011. His measureables are very similar to Fogg’s.

Report: Steelers Working Out CB Kevin Fogg Today

The Steelers are reportedly hosting former Liberty CB Kevin Fogg for a workout today according to NFL Draft Diamonds. Fogg was with the Miami Dolphins this summer, and the 5’10” 190 lb defensive back played for the FXFL Brooklyn Bolts this fall.  Football Gameplan gave Fogg their FXFL Special Teams MVP award.

Fogg was a return specialist in college where he averaged 10.4 yards per punt return, and 23.1 yards per kick return his senior year. He recorded a 33.5 yard/kick return average his junior year and returned 3 for touchdowns. A foot injury hampered his final season, which kept him out of 7 games.

At his Pro Day, Fogg ran a 4.49 second 40-yard dash, had a vertical jump of 33-inches, and recorded a broad jump of 10-feet, 4-inches.

Here are his highlights from college, and from his stint in the FXFL.

According to Chris Bradford of the Beaver County Times, the team is hosting other players for tryouts today, but their names are not available at the time of this writing.

Steelers Preseason

Steelers Snap Counts Vs. Bengals

Below you can see the tables for the Steelers participation data on offense and defense from yesterday’s win over the Bengals. On offense, Mike Adams played all 73 snaps at right tackle, in place of Marcus Gilbert, who was out with an ankle injury.

Matt Spaeth saw his playing time double from the previous week, as did Will Johnson. Troy Polamalu’s offfensive snap was in the victory formation. Recently activated running back Josh Harris saw five plays and touched the ball on four of them. For anyone wondering at home, Darrius Heyward-Bay did not contribute on offense in Cincinnati. His only playing time was on special teams.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jarvis Jones returned to action and was rotated in for 34 plays. Steve McLendon also returned from a long absence. The starting nose tackle saw the field for 25 snaps, which is about average for Steelers nose. Stephon Tuitt got his first start at defensive end this week, replacing Brett Keisel who suffered a season ending injury last week.

Mike Tomlin

Mike Tomlin On The Victory In Cincinnati

Here is a transcript from Mike Tomlin’s press conference after today’s 41-21 victory over the Bengals.

That was a tough AFC North December battle. Kind of what we anticipated. Give those guys credit. It seemed like every time we got control of it they got a big play and regained control of it. Also give our guys credit because they didn’t fold in the face of that, in a hostile environment today.

The guys made the necessary plays. Not perfect, still giving up big plays. That created problems for us today; it’s created problems for us. I like the resolve of the group. We played as a team and we got it done. A lot to be excited about, but just very necessary. Hopefully we learn from these lessons and move forward to our next challenge. No real major injuries. Ike (Taylor) got beat up a little today, got a knee contusion, got an AC joint. The rest appeared to be pretty clean.

His thoughts on the long touchdown pass to Martavis Bryant:

We just weren’t going to live in our fears today. We needed to be aggressive. We needed to create some splash. It seems like we seized control of the game, they regained control of the game with a splash play. Going up top to 18 (AJ Green), so we just tried to do a little bit of that on our own. It worked out for us, good protection and great throw, and 10 (Bryant) finished it.

About weighing the risk and reward for that play:

Every moment of every day but that’s life, particularly in this league.

Was there something leading up to make you think that play would work?

They are aggressive when you are backed up. They want to keep you backed up. That is football 101. I think that is any defense. Sometimes those opportunities are usually there but it’s about whether or not you are you willing to take the risk and are you capable of capitalizing on it. We were able to get it done today.

Is it hard for the defense to keep confidence when they give up big plays?

It’s less about the defense and more about the people. One of the things that’s positive about our group is we have some guys back there that have played some football like Troy (Polamalu) and Ike (Taylor), Mike Mitchell and Will Gay they’re not young people. They’re able to flush it out, move forward, and understand that the next snap is the most important one. It would be better if we minimized them.

His thoughts on Ben Roethlisberger’s play today after the past couple of weeks:

It was very necessary. It seems like he always plays good in Ohio. We knew what we needed today from everyone and he’s central to that.

How do Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown keep doing it?

I really think they get the headlines and stuff and deservedly so because they do a lot for us, but I also think that the other guys answer the bell when their numbers are called upon. Whether it’s Martavis Bryant or Markus Wheaton or Heath Miller or Lance Moore, it seems like the other guys batted a pretty good percentage when their number is called upon. I think that keeps a level playing field for those two key components to do what it is they do. Those guys answer the bell, make significant plays. They don’t have an opportunity to maybe have a volume of plays that Brown and Bell get but significant none the less because they keep the dogs off those two.

Why was it working so well on the left side running the ball?

I really wasn’t paying attention. (David) DeCastro is a pretty good puller. Other than that I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to the direction of the runs.

After the AJ Green touchdown, did you decide to stay with Ike?

I did, it’s on me.

Did the fumble recovery by Arthur Moats swing the momentum?

It was a big play in the game. It was a huge play in the game. It was what we needed. A short field. Often times a short field alone doesn’t do it. It’s working together, working in concert with one another. We didn’t do a good enough job of it a week ago working in concert. We talked about it, offense, defense, special teams. That’s an example of us doing it today and allowing us to gain victory.

How pleasing was it to close a game out?

I don’t care about the style points, we are just trying to do what is necessary and get out of these stadiums with wins and stay in the thick of things. It was a significant day today here in the North.

If Le’Veon had less success earlier on, would we have seen more of Josh Harris?

No. We’re going to give it to Le’Veon.

Was Dri Archer hurt, was that why he wasn’t active?

It was the best mix for us today. We had some defenders coming back today. We got some significant special teams contributors. We didn’t want to lessen that. They have a dangerous kicking game. The net punting, the net punt return was really a field flipper. We wanted to respect that. They have dangerous return men in Tate and Jones. We allocated the bodies in that area.

Inactives For Steelers Versus Bengals

Here are today’s inactives for the Steelers game in Cincinnati.

For the Steelers:

QB Landry Jones, RB Dri Archer, WR Justin Brown, CB B.W. Webb, DE Clifton Geathers, OT Marcus Gilbert, and LB James Harrison.

For the Bengals:

WR Sanzenbacher, LB Vontaze Burfict, OL Hawkinson, LB Chris Carter, DL Margus Hunt, WR James Wright, and DB Lewis-Harris.

jarvis jones

Steelers Activate Jarvis Jones, Place Cortez Allen On IR

The Steelers announce that they have activated outside linebacker Jarvis Jones today. In a corresponding roster move, CB Cortez Allen has been placed on season ending injured reserve. Jones was placed on the Injured Reserve list with the return designation after suffering a wrist injury during week 3. He has 2 sacks so far this season.

Jones’ activation doesn’t really come as a surprise. He has been indicating all week that the move would come, and with James Harrison’s knee injury, it seemed that much more likely.

Cortez Allen getting placed on injured reserve does come as a surprise. He was working his way back from a thumb injury that required surgery, and was listed as probable for Sunday’s game. Allen signed a 5 year, $26 Mil extension in September, and has had a pretty disappointing season.

Marcus-Gilbert

Gilbert Ruled Out; James Harrison Doubtful For Sunday

The Steelers face the Bengals this Sunday in Cincinnati, and they’ll be doing so without starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert. Gilbert has been ruled out for Sunday’s game due to the ankle injury he suffered last week. With Gilbert out, Mike Adams will be starting at RT again this week.

James Harrison, who has missed practice time this week due to a knee injury, is listed as doubtful to play this Sunday. With Harrison out, expect to see Jarvis Jones activated to the active roster. Jones was wearing a new cast today in practice, one that is suited for game play.

The team could be getting starting nose tackle Steve McLendon back on Sunday. McLendon is listed as questionable on the injury report, but did participate fully in this week’s practices. The veteran defensive lineman is coming back from a shoulder injury that has kept him out since the Tennessee Titans game.

Ben Roethlisberger (not injury related), Ike Taylor (shoulder), Cortez Allen (thumb), Brice McCain (hamstring), Troy Polamalu (illness), Ryan Shazier (ankle), and Heath Miller (not injury related) are all listed as probable for Sunday.

Baltimore Ravens Haloti Ngata

Ravens Haloti Ngata Suspended For Remainder Of Season

The NFL has announced that Ravens defensive lineman Haloti Ngata will be suspended for four games due to a violation of the PED policy. The veteran defensive lineman will be not be able to return until December 29th- the day after the regular season finale.

Ngata quickly released a statement regarding the suspension, stating that he used Adderall.

“I made a mistake, and I own this. I took Adderall and take full responsibility for doing this,” Ngata said in the statement. “I am deeply sorry and broken up over this. I let down my family, my teammates, Ravens fans and myself. My hope is that the Ravens make the playoffs, and I believe they can do this. And, then I can come back and help us win.”

If you aren’t aware, Adderall is said to be widely used as a PR excuse to soften the PED suspension news. Afterall, if a player wanted Adderall, it’d be pretty easy for him to get a prescription for it. Since the league does not disclose what substance the player tested positive for, the player can tell the media whatever he wants.

The Ravens released their own statement about the suspension this morning.

“This is disappointing news for the Ravens,” G.M. Ozzie Newsome said of the four-game suspension. “We are disappointed with Haloti, but no more than he is with himself.”

According to one Baltimore beat reporter, the team learned about the suspension yesterday. Ngata will lose $2 Mil in base salary over the course of his 4 week suspension.

Chris_Carter_(linebacker)

Bengals Sign Former Steelers LB Chris Carter

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed former Steelers linebacker Chris Carter today according to ESPN.

https://twitter.com/caplannfl/status/540221208760160256

Carter was drafted by the Steelers in the 5th round of the 2011 draft. The veteran linebacker was cut by the Steelers at the end of August, and spent time with the Colts before being released in October.

With the Steelers facing the Bengals twice in the next 4 weeks, the addition isn’t a surprise. It’s not uncommon for teams to add former players of their upcoming opponents in hopes to get an edge in preparation.

If he sees the field at all this Sunday, it will be to contribute on special teams.
