Mike Mayock: Steelers Will Heavily Consider Ebron

NFL Draft guru Mike Mayock held his pre-draft conference call with the media this afternoon. The call lasted about an hour less than the 3 hour call he hosted in February. The Pittsburgh Tribune’s Mark Kaboly called in to ask Mayock his thoughts on how the recent youth movement on the Steelers defense would impact their first round selection.

“I think the way Pittsburgh historically approaches the draft is it’s the best player at the position of need,” said Mayock. “Defensively they were 14 in points allowed, offensively- number 16. So basically, I think as they get closer to number 15 here…they’ve got to see if a corner matches up to what they want to do on defense.” Mayock, who’s recent rankings change had Kyle Fuller moving up to the number one corner spot, thinks he’s a possible fit for the Steelers, with a caveat. ‘Whether it’s Fuller, Gilbert, Dennard or Roby depends on what Dick LeBeau wants and how Kevin Colbert lines them up’, said Mayock.

Mayock went on to say that he thinks the Steelers need to get a corner in the first, but if a certain offensive player is there, they may not. “I don’t think the tight end Eric Ebron will be there. If he was, I think he’d be a heavy consideration also,” he added.

Ebron would be an interesting pick for the Steelers for sure. While he has some improving to do at the next level, and doesn’t fit the mold of a “Steelers” tight end, Ebron would be a great, multi-dimensional TE who would fit the Joker role very well in the NFL.
