Chiefs Execs Call Shenanigans Over Sanders Deal

So, I reported earlier that Emmanuel Sanders was expected to sign with the Denver Broncos. You could say this came out of left field. As it turns out, Ian Rapoport is reporting that some team officials are crying foul over the way negotiations were handled by Sanders’ camp.

According to Rapoport, one unnamed team official claimed that Sanders’ agent Steve Wienberg “broke every rule in negotiations”. A team source says that Wienberg accepted a deal “in principle” with the Chiefs, but then went on to use that deal to negotiate with Tampa Bay. All the while, never telling Tampa Bay that they agreed to terms with KC.

An executive involved in the dealings was quoted to have said, “This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiation. Adding, “[It’s] totally wrong. This needs to be stopped.”

Adding perhaps a little more drama to this situation is the fact that Sanders recently changed representation. As it turns out, the agent he switched to is his former agent’s old partner at Woy, Weinberg, & Woy. Weinberg was recently reinstated by the NFLPA after being de-certified in 2003.

While it doesn’t sound like Wienberg did anything illicit here, it’s certainly going to hurt his credibility in future dealings.

Report: Denver Is Expected To Sign Emmanuel Sanders

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Broncos are expected to sign Emmanuel Sanders. This move comes as a bit of a surprise. Denver hasn’t been reported as one of Sanders suitors.

Alex Marvez of FoxSports is confirming Schefter’s report as well.

Sanders posted a good-bye video of sorts earlier, so it seemed the news of a new contract was coming very soon. Here’s the video:

Report: Medical Likely Why Sanders Hasn’t Been Signed Yet

So far, Emmanuel Sanders has had visits with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He is reported to have a visit scheduled with the 49ers tomorrow. With this flurry of visits, one has to wonder- why doesn’t he have a contract yet?

The answer, according to Scott Brown of ESPN, is due to his medical history. Sanders missed very minimal time last season due to knee and foot injuries. The main injury concerns according to Brown, are due to the surgeries he’s had on his feet over two years ago. Durability was once a concern for the Steelers, though it hasn’t been an issue recently. The Patriots made an offer on Sanders last season, but teams often prioritize injury histories differently for one year rentals.

I have to think the bigger issue for Sanders is the money he’s reportedly seeking. According to Brown, Sanders is believed to be seeking Golden Tate money. Tate just signed a 5 year, $31.5 Mil deal, which included $13.25 in guaranteed money. If that’s true, Sanders is going to be disappointed.

The Steelers are reportedly open to having Sanders back, but there is no way they’ll offer him a contract anywhere in that ballpark. Sanders is coming off of his best season, but as we enter the 2nd wave of free agency, he’ll most likely need to consider lowering his expectations.

Sanders Leaves Tampa Bay Without Contract, Visits Chiefs Friday

Free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is scheduled to visit the Kansas City Chiefs tomorrow according to Ian Rapoport. Sanders has already had a visit with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and visited with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today. It’s unclear whether or not either team offered Sanders a contract, but he definitely has not signed one as of the time of this writing.

While Sanders may not be one of the top few remaining wide receivers on the free agent market,  I would be surprised if he remained unsigned much longer.

Emmanuel Sanders To Meet With Bucs After Jaguars Visit

After free agent WR Emmanuel Sanders is done with his visit in Jacksonville, he’s slated for a meeting with Tampa Bay, according to Jason La Canfora.

Sanders should have no trouble finding a decent sized contract with a new team. A few other teams have been rumored to be interested in Sanders, so if he doesn’t walk away with a deal from today’s meetings, you can expect to hear about more meetings scheduled in the coming days.

Report: Ziggy Hood And Emmanuel Sanders Visiting Jaguars Today

Adding to the list of Steelers free agents who are drawing attention from other teams, WR Emmanuel Sanders and DE Ziggy Hood are reportedly in Jacksonville meeting with the Jaguars.

According to Adam Schefter, Sanders’ visit is going very well.

Sanders not returning to the Steelers shouldn’t come as a surprise. Though, I’ve long suspected that Ziggy Hood may not return. That’s just speculation on my part of course, but 1st round picks seem to have a tendency to demand 1st round pick money, and Hood hasn’t earned that type of contract here. Obviously defensive line depth is a concern this year. We’ll learn more in the near future.

Emmanuel Sanders Parts Ways With Agent

Emmanuel Sanders has parted ways with his agent, Jordan Woy, according to Liz Mullen of the SportsBusinessJournal. Willis and Woy Sports Group has represented some familiar names including Flozell Adams, Donald Driver, and former Steelers WR Yancy Thigpen.

No details were given about why Sanders left his agent, but you’re imagination is as good as mine. This isn’t huge news, and players change agents regularly, but it’s the off-season and Sanders will be a FA so I thought I’d pass it along.

Report: Jets Interested In Emmanuel Sanders

The New York Daily News reports that they’ve learned that the NY Jets are “coveting” soon to be Steelers free agent WR Emmanuel Sanders. The Jets are in bad need of an upgrade to their receiving corps, who were ranked 31st last year. Also, Santonio Holmes is reportedly not part of their plan moving forward.

This makes at least the third team that is rumored or reportedly interested in Sanders. I’ve felt for some time that Sanders wouldn’t be a Steeler next year, and that Jericho Cotchery would. Cotchery is definitely going to be the easier FA WR to keep, and his recent on field production has earned him the nickname of “Jericho Clutchery”. OK, I made that up, but it could work.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Sanders landed a contract that averaged in the $4 million per year range. That’s on the high end, but with buzz he’s garnering before free agency begins, it’s realistic.

Emmanuel Sanders Optimistic After MRI On Knee

Emmanuel Sanders told the local media today that he had a MRI on his injured knee, and that the news was good. Coach Tomlin reported yesterday that Sanders had a lateral meniscus sprain. Sanders said he didn’t do much at practice today, but he’s hopeful he can play on Sunday. The biggest obstacle will be regaining the strength in his knee to make necessary cuts. If Sanders isn’t available on Sunday, then I expect Derek Moye to get a helmet, which should make many a Steelers fan happy

Ian Rapoport’s Source: Sanders Injury Nothing Major

According to Ian Rapoport, Emmanuel Sanders’ foot injury is nothing major.

Sanders left the Lions game in the first half and did not return for the remainder of the game. While the details are not know, the injury is to the same foot that Sanders had surgeries on in 2011. Hopefully, Ian’s source is correct. Mr. Rapoport has drawn heavy criticism for information he received from “sources” recently.
