Coach Tomlin’s Post-Game Interview Transcript

Here is the transcript from Mike Tomlin’s post game press conference yesterday.

“Necessary win for us. We’re cognizant of what is going on in other stadiums but that bed has been made weeks ago. I do appreciate the efforts today in terms of doing what we needed to do in our stadium. We’ll wait like everyone else to see what happens. But obviously, I’m proud of the group, their ability to stay singularly focused, to fight the fight that’s in front of them, to put some of our past transgressions behind us, largely speaking. Not only today, but over the second half of the season. It’s been a trying journey, but it’s been a rewarding one in a lot of ways from a growth standpoint. Hopefully we get an opportunity to continue forward. On the injury front, a few minor ones. Jerricho Cotchery hurt his ribs. I don’t know the status of him in regards to potentially next week. Steve McLendon re-aggravated his ankle. We’ll evaluate both guys. But largely a good effort, a necessary win and we’ll move forward hopefully.”

Through the course of this did you ever allow yourself to consider possible playoff scenarios or was it kind of tunnel vision?

We had to do what we needed to do in our stadium and that’s where we tried to remain focused. We saw the highlights and scoreboard and everything like everyone else, but that’s irrelevant. We needed to be concerned with what was going on in our stadium and largely I thought the group collectively was able to do that.

Being that you guys faced adversity in the beginning of the season, do you consider the second half of this season one of your better coaching efforts?

I’m not into evaluating my performance. I’m into winning games with this group and we were able to do enough over the second half to put ourselves in position to be where we are, and for that I’m thankful.

Antonio Brown set a record to be the first player to have over five catches and 50 yards in every game in a season. Can you speak about him?

He’s a hard worker. He’s our team MVP. He’s highly productive. He wants to be one of the key reasons why we’re successful. He’s just got all the makings of a guy on the upswing in his career and it’s good to see production to go along with those types of efforts.

NFL Issues Statement On Chargers Illegal Formation

The NFL has issued a statement regarding the illegal formation that was not penalized during the field goal in the final seconds of regulation yesterday. Had the play been called correctly, it is very likely that the Steelers would be in the playoffs instead of the Chargers.

Here is the statement:

With 0:08 remaining in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers, Kansas City faced a fourth-and-12 from the San Diego 23.  The Chiefs attempted a 41-yard field that was no good.

On the play, San Diego lined up with seven men on one side of the snapper.  This should have been penalized as an illegal formation by the defense.

Rule 9, Section 1, Article 3 (b) (1) of the NFL Rule Book (page 51) states that “No more than six Team B players may be on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper at the snap.”

The penalty for illegal formation by the defense is a loss of five yards.  This is not subject to instant replay review.  Had the penalty been assessed, it would have resulted in a fourth-and-seven from the San Diego 18 with 0:04 remaining, enabling the Chiefs to attempt a 36-yard field goal.

Steelers 2014 Draft Position Is Set

The 2014 NFL Draft order for the non-playoff teams is locked in. The Pittsburgh Steelers will select with the 15th pick in the first round. The last time the Steelers had a pick as low as 15 was in 2007, when they selected ILB Lawrence Timmons. Here is the 2014 draft order for the teams who did not make the playoffs:

1.  Houston Texans – 2-14
2.  St. Louis Rams (via Washington Redskins) – 3-13
3.  Jacksonville Jaguars – 4-12
4.  Cleveland Browns – 4-12
5.  Oakland Raiders – 4-12
6.  Atlanta Falcons – 4-12
7.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 4-12
8.  Minnesota Vikings – 5-10-1
9.  Buffalo Bills – 6-10
10. Detroit Lions – 7-9
11.  Tennessee Titans – 7-9
12.  New York Giants – 7-9
13.  St. Louis Rams – 7-9
14.  Chicago Bears – 8-8
15.  Pittsburgh Steelers – 8-8
16 or 17. Baltimore Ravens – 8-8
16 or 17. Dallas Cowboys – 8-8
18.  New York Jets – 8-8
19.  Miami Dolphins – 8-8
20.  Arizona Cardinals – 10-5

As you can see, even though there are 6 teams who finished 8-8, the Steelers pick 15th due to tie breaking procedures. The tie breakers are as follows:

1. Strength of schedule, which is the combined win-loss record for all 16 of the team’s opponents in the previous season. The team with the lower strength of schedule (i.e. their opponents compiled fewer wins) is granted the earlier pick in round one.

2. Division tiebreakers (if the teams are in the same division).

3. Conference tiebreakers (if the teams are in the same conference).

4. Coin toss which occurs at the NFL Combine. The Ravens and Cowboys will flip to decide who will pick 16th or 17th.

I’ll be posting pretty regularly about the Steelers 2014 draft prospects and draft related news during the off-season, so stayed tuned.

San Diego Was Lined Up Illegally During Missed Field Goal

To add insult to injury to Steelers fans, the refs missed an easy call during the missed KC field goal that would have won the game at the end of the 4th quarter, sending the Steelers to the playoffs. As you can see in the picture below, the Chargers have 7 linemen lined up to the right of the Chiefs center, which is illegal. You are not permitted to have more than 6 men lined up on either side of the center at the line of scrimmage.

Chiefs Chargers Field Goal

The Chargers should have been flagged for illegal formation, and the Chiefs should have had another attempt at the field goal from a closer distance. Before you say it- illegal formation is not reviewable.

After Exciting End, Steelers Eliminated From Playoffs

Despite taking care of business at home against the Browns, and having both the Ravens and Dolphins lose, the Steelers playoff hopes were dashed in overtime when the Chargers beat the Chiefs 27-24 as their starters looked on from the sideline. Who would have thought during week 4 that the Steelers would still be in playoff contention during the final seconds of another team’s game in week 17. It was really the cherry on top of a season that was full of “almosts”.

Browns Inactives For Today’s Game

The Browns have 3 starters out today. Here is their complete list:

QB Alex Tanney, CB Joe Haden (hip pointer), LG Jason Pinkston (concussion), RG Shawn Lauvao (thigh contusion), TE Andre Smith (strained calf), DE John Hughes (sprained knee) and NT Phil Taylor (concussion).

The Steelers offense will want to capitalize on the absences of Haden, Hughes and Taylor. I expect another big game for Le’Veon Bell.

Steelers Inactives Vs Browns Week 17

The following Steelers are inactive for today’s game:

QB Landry Jones, CB Isaiah Green, ILB Terence Garvin, DE Brian Arnfelt, NT Hebron Fangupo, OLB Jason Worilds, and C/G Chris Snow. Worilds was listed as questionable on the injury report, due to his abdominal injury. Expect to see Carter to start, and Sylvester to sub in.

Emmanuel Sanders is active today, as is Derek Moye.

Antonio Brown And Troy Polamalu Selected To 2014 Pro Bowl

The NFL announced the rosters for the 2014 pro bowl today, and both Antonio Brown and Troy Polamalu were selected. Brown was selected both as a wide receiver, and as a punt returner. This is the 2nd pro bowl nomination for Brown, and the 8th for Polamalu. This year, the pro bowl is unconferenced, and the selections are made based on votes from fans, players, and coaches.

Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will serve as team captains to the two pro bowl teams, and players will be drafted to each team during  a live draft, that will be televised on the NFL network on January 22, 2014. The 2014 Pro Bowl will broadcast live on NBC at 7 p.m on January 26, 2014 from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Notable snubs: Ben Roethlisberger, David DeCastro. The Steelers had two players selected and the 4-11 Browns get five players selected. Go figure. Maybe there’s a pro bowl version of ‘vote for the worst’.

Matt Spaeth Fined $7,875 For Unnecessary Roughness

The NFL has fined TE Matt Spaeth $7,875.00 for unnecessary roughness. Spaeth was penalized after the play in question against Green Bay, which happened in the last minute of the 3rd quarter. After AJ Hawk intercepted a pass from Ben Roethlisberger, Spaeth blocked Jamari Lattimore, which drew the flag. You can see a gif of the block below.

Steelers And Browns Week 17 Injury Reports

The Steelers injury report is out for the Browns game, and it looks pretty good. Terence Garvin (knee) is the only player who is ruled out for the Steelers. Both Emmanuel Sanders (knee) and Jason Worilds (abdomen) are labeled as questionable. David DeCastro (back), Jarvis Jones (illness), Brett Keisel (foot) , Heath Miller (non-injury), Troy Polamalu (non-injury), and Markus Wheaton (finger).

Sanders spoke with media today regarding his status and said, “Right now I’m 50-50. We’re going to call it a game-time decision.” He went on to say that he’ll try to play through the pain if it won’t make the injury any worse.

When asked about his back, David DeCastro said, “I’m good to go. My back’s fine.”

For the Browns:

OG Jason Pinkston (concussion), TE Andre Smith (strained calf) and NT Phil Taylor (concussion) are all Out.

DE John Hughes (knee, elbow) is Doubtful

TE Jordan Cameron (concussion), cornerback Joe Haden (hip pointer), guard John Greco (sprained knee) and guard Shawn Lauvao (thigh contusion) are listed as Questionable.

LB Paul Kruger (illness), S Jordan Poyer (toe), OT Joe Thomas (back), LB Tank Carder (shoulder), P Spencer Lanning (left knee), RB Willis McGahee (knee), OT Mitchell Schwartz (toe) and S T.J. Ward (shoulder, illness) are all listed as Probable.
