Hi guys, I'm taking my daughter from Mexico City to her first ever ballgame. Just her and me. I was wondering if you could give me some tips on what to do in Pittsburgh with my kid.

    Really appreciate your help.

    Ride the Duquesne incline.
    Ride a gateway clipper boat.
Your the strip district, buy Steeler gear, and eat at Primantis.
If you are staying for days, the Carnegie museum is good.

I agree with jeh. Our family just got back from there and we had a great time doing all those things (minus the clipper). The Strip district on Saturday morning was particularly fun, and we had a great dinner in that area on Friday night.

Phipps conservatory and carnegie museum are nice. The strip district is great. I always thought primantis is overrated(blasphemy i know). Jeromes place is nice. Next to stadium.

I always enjoy walking around and meeting tailagters. Alot of interesting people.lol

Jeh pretty much has all the areas nailed down.
Depending on when you go, and what kind of free time you have, you can always spend a day at Kennywood. Probably one of the best theme parks in the country, IMHO

If you daughter is between the ages of 5-14 take her to the Kids science museum and sports complex. Definitely go up the incline(s). Find a hole in the wall local pizza place. Do not eat chain pizza places. Don't worry, you will find hundreds of local places but hardly any chains when it come to the pizza there. Strip District, then tailgating. Bring us home a W.:)

    "The Strip District"

Shopping area along Penn Avenue and Smallman Street from 16th to about 22nd. Produce, fish, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Steeler Gear, restaurants, etc. It was where the produce yards were years ago. It's a strip of land between the river and a hill.

Fun to walk around on a Saturday. Most shops shut down mid afternoon.

Things to eat: Cheese Steak at Primanti's, fish sandwich at Wholey's, meat on a stick from Chinese street vendors, tacos at Reyna, Enrico Biscotti, clams, shrimp, oysters at Roland's.

Parking can be a challenge. Best chance is on Smallman Street and totally avoid Penn Avenue.

There are usually a couple of post requests for the same things each year. I've cut and pasted some responses here, and found a bunch of old links. Then I saved it as a document that can then be added en mass. Maybe this would be a good starter for a permanent post?

    Things to do:

    Ride the Duquesne incline.

    Ride a gateway clipper boat.

    Tour the strip district.

If you are staying for days, the Carnegie museum is good.

    Carnegie Science Center

    Highmark SportsWorks

    National Aviary

    Children's Museum

View of Pittsburgh along Mount Washington

The Great Hall at Heinz Field

    Phipps Conservatory

    Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium

    Stadium Tour

    Kennywood (In season)

Very informative folks! (special shout out to Jeh) My wife and I are planning to be in town for a game, and will be staying downtown for 2 or 3 nights. It sounds like there's plenty to do within walking distance.

I recommend the Duck Boat Tour (www.justduckytours.com) if it is running when you are there. I was looking for things for my wife (from NC) to enjoy to offset the time I wanted to spend touring the stadium and pissing on the Browns at Bettis's. She loved it and I actually learned some things about Pittsburgh. Seeing the stadiums via the river was very cool as well.

I never see anyone mention this for a visitor's to-do list.

Other than those things (which are all great) my advice is simpler: Stay at a hotel down town the night before the game. NOTHING will ever beat waking up downtown on a game day. It is almost indescribable. If you can't swing staying downtown, then at least get up and go down there game day to still experience what it is like. You and your daughter will never forget it. Just walking around and grabbing brunch or whatever is such a blast.

We've had this misunderstanding in the past as well - especially with our European brethren crossing the pond to see a game and explore Pittsburgh. The "strip districts" in Amsterdam, New Orleans and San Francisco have a much different connotation. JEH clears up all misunderstandings in his post.

Carnegie is great, and you can cross the street and eat at the Dirty O.
