Report: Steelers To Lose Draft Pick Regardless Of Playoffs

According to media outlets this morning, the NFL plans to penalize the Steelers further by taking a late round draft pick from the team. Originally it was believed by many that the league was leaving the case open, in case of playoff tie-breaking implications from Tomlin’s sideline step. However, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports and Mike Florio of ProfootballTalk (via Peter King) report that tie-breakers are not a factor, and that the league plans to take a late round pick from the team regardless.

Personally, I have a problem with breaking NFL news that’s reported on Sunday morning. In my opinion, these types of reports are generally published in an effort to funnel web traffic to their website in hopes to keep the reader there for all the Sunday football festivities. These stories almost always have the phrase ‘according to a source’ in the first two sentences.

As much as this has made headlines, I would be surprised if the league does in fact take away a draft pick from the Steelers for this. We’ll most likely be at the mercy of rumors and speculation for the next few months unfortunately.

Steelers Activate Matt Spaeth, Release TE Gordon

The Steelers have announced that they have activated TE Matt Spaeth to the active roster. The team had until the end of next week to make a decision on Spaeth. The tight end had surgery almost 4 months ago to repair a lisfranc injury he suffered during training camp.

To clear space for the roster move, the team has released TE Richard Gordon. Gordon didn’t play a snap since being signed with the team on October 15th.

Woodley, Bell, And DeCastro All Probable For Sunday

Good news on the Steelers injury front today- LaMarr Woodley (calf), Le’Veon Bell (concussion), and David DeCastro (foot) are all listed as probable for the Dolphins game this Sunday.

Woodley spoke about starting after practice, “I’ll be starting. It will be based on how I feel. You don’t want to fatigue it and reinjure it. We’ll be smart about it.” Right guard David DeCastro also plans on starting. “Yeah, I’m gonna go.”, said DeCastro after practice.

LT Kelvin Beachum (knee) is doubtful and NT Steve McLendon (ankle) is questionable. Brett Keisel (foot) has been officially ruled out, though coach Tomlin said as much earlier in the week.

Steelers Thursday Practice Participation Report

It’s looking more and more like Mike Adams will be starting at left tackle this Sunday, as Kelvin Beachum did not practice again today. Steve McLendon also did not participate in practice today due to his ankle injury. David DeCastro was limited in practice today. According to Bob Labriola, there seems to be some hope that DeCastro will be able to play on Sunday. We’ll have a better idea tomorrow of course.

Le’Veon Bell participated fully again today in practice. In regards to Bell, the Steelers PR man Burt Lauten had this to say this afternoon:

Le’Veon Bell has been cleared for full practice, but not to play until passing tests through the weekend. The Steelers medical staff will continue to monitor Le’Veon Bell’s status through the week to make sure he continues without symptoms.”

Bell has passed concussion tests up until this point, but will need to pass medical evaluations this weekend before being cleared to play.

More good injury news: LaMarr Woodley was also a full participant today, coming back from his calf injury. Mike Adams participated fully as well today.

Bell Was A Full Participant In Practice Today And Other News

RB Le’Veon Bell was back to full participation today, just 6 days out of suffering that devastating hit on Thanksgiving night. OT (TE) Mike Adams was also a full participant today, which is good news considering the OL depth. He’s coming back from an ankle sprain.

In other injury news LT Kelvin Beachum (knee), G David DeCastro (foot), and NT Steve McLendon (ankle) did not practice today. LB LaMarr Woodley (calf) was limited today.

Mike Tomlin Fined $100,000 For Sideline Fiasco

The NFL has announced it’s punishment for Mike Tomlin’s sideline incident. They’ve fined him $100,000. The league is also keeping further punishment on the table. Here’s what the NFL said in regards to that:

“a modification or forfeiture of draft choices will be considered after the final order of the 2014 draft has been determined.”

You read that correctly, they will consider penalizing the Steelers via the draft after the 2014 draft order has been determined. While this seems highly unlikely, it’s pretty astounding that the NFL would issue such a severe, and open ended punishment.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Mike Tomlin’s $100,000 fine is 4th reported fine of $100K or larger given to an NFL coach. The only bigger fine was Belichick’s $500K fine for Spygate.

Here is Coach Tomlin’s statement regarding the punishment:

“As I stated yesterday, I take full responsibility for my actions, and I apologize for causing negative attention to the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. I accept the penalty that I received.

I will no longer address this issue as I am preparing for an important game this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.”

Keisel Ruled Out And Other Injury News

Coach Tomlin gave his weekly injury updates earlier today, and the news was mixed. Here is a rundown of what he had to say on the injury front. First, Brett Keisel can be considered out this week due to a setback with his plantar fasciitis. Kelvin Beachum won’t practice in the earlier portion of the week due to his right knee sprain. He can be characterized as questionable this week according to coach Tomlin. David DeCastro has a left foot sprain, he will be limited earlier in the week and should be characterized as questionable as well.

Mike Adams has a left ankle sprain and he will practice in some capacity. Le’Veon Bell practiced in a limited capacity yesterday, and they’ll continue to march him back to health. ‘Of course we’ll go through the necessary checkpoints in terms of his concussion’, said Tomlin. “Thus far it’s been very positive with him”.

Steve McLendon with his left ankle sprain will work in a limited capacity, and we’ll see where the week’s work takes him. The same goes for LaMarr Woodley. He worked partially yesterday and he’ll work partially again on Wednesday.

Steelers Sign C/G David Snow To Active Roster

The Steelers announce that they have signed former Bills C/G David Snow to the active roster. The team was granted a roster exemption for Rashad Butler after he was placed on the exempt list.

Snow (6’4″, 303), was a UDFA originally signed by the Bills in 2012. He played at right guard and center for the Bills during 3 games last year, and appears to be a serviceable lineman.

The Steelers also added CB Brandon Jones to the practice squad today. Jones replaces Devin Smith on the practice squad. Jones was a UDFA who signed with the Patriots this Spring and spent the summer with them before being cut. He recently was on the Giants practice squad before being released last week.
