Elias Sports Bureau Stat Change- Worilds Loses Sack [Gif]

The Elias Sports Bureau has released official scoring changes for the Steelers vs. Dolphins game today. One of those changes results in the loss of a sack for OLB Jason Worilds. Even after the stat change, Worilds still leads the Steelers defense in sacks with 7. Cam Heyward and LaMarr Woodley are tied behind him with 5.

Elias changed the play in question to an “aborted play”. Here it is:

Ben Roethlisberger was also credited with 5 receiving yards for the lateral during the last play of the game.

Wednesday Practice Participation For Steelers And Bengals

Today’s practice report for the Steelers has a large number of DNP’s. OT Kelvin Beachum was a full participant today, which is great news. David DeCastro and Jerricho Cotchery also participated fully.

Ziggy Hood (ankle), Brett Keisel (foot), Marcus Gilbert (ankle), Steve McLendon (ankle) and Troy Polamalu (shoulder) all did not practice today.

For the Bengals:

RB Green-Ellis, CB Newman did not practice. LB Burfict, DE Gilberry, S Iloka, and WR Jones were all limited.

Steelers Injury News Is Pretty Good This Week

Coach Tomlin gave his weekly injury updates today, and the news was positive. Kelvin Beachum has an opportunity to get back this week, though he’ll probably be limited during the early portion of the week. Brett Keisel, who is working his way back from a foot injury, also has a chance to get back this week, and will also likely be limited early in the week. He had an extended workout yesterday. The team will watch him closely and monitor his progress throughout the week according to Tomlin.

Tomlin said that the players who worked their way back last week- David DeCastroSteve McLendon, and LaMarr Woodley-  may be limited in practice, but aren’t expected to take steps backward this week. Ziggy Hood suffered an ankle injury in the game but was able to return. He may be limited early in the week. The same can be said for Jerricho Cotchery, who sustained a shoulder contusion during the loss to the Dolphins.

Steelers Practice Squad- DE Davis Signed, RB Graham Released

The Steelers have signed DE Hall Davis to the practice squad. RB Ray Graham was released to make room for the signing.

Davis is listed at 6’6″, and 285 lbs. The 27 year old end has been with several teams over the past few seasons. Most recently, he was released from the Cowboys practice squad a couple weeks ago, and saw playing time with the Browns during the last two games of the 2012 season.

Mike Adams Deserves Credit For His Performance Vs Miami

Mike Adams started at left tackle in place of the injured Kelvin Beachum on Sunday, and did a good job of keeping Ben’s jersey clean. Adams started off slowly, but progressed as the game unfolded. Maybe it was the snow, as it was falling at it’s heaviest early in the game, or maybe it was nerves getting shaken off.

You could see his progression throughout the game. He displayed more confidence and quickness in his punch, and kept his assignments from laying a hand on Ben. His blocking in the run game was what you’d hope for, too, though he did far less of it. 45 of the plays he saw were in pass protection, where as 24 carried run blocking duties.

It should also be mentioned that schematically, he (and his counterpart on the right) did not have an extra lineman serving as a blocking tight end on the line. Coach Tomlin was asked about his performance in his weekly press conference and acknowledged his play.

‘I thought he represented himself well, and it was a great opportunity to get back to the tackle position, and show his capabilities in that area, but also I think that he’s been a positive contributor to our efforts with the things we’ve asked him to do at the extra tight end spot…it probably helped him get back on the field at the left tackle position.’, said Tomlin.

Adams showed that he remains a contender for the left tackle position, though he does need improvement, and will need to have more opportunities to remain in that conversation.

Mike Tomlin Post Game Press Conference

Here’s the transcript from Coach Tomlin’s post game presser. Enjoy.

Tomlin:

“Not enough playmaking for us in any of the three phases to secure victory. Obviously, there was enough playmaking by them. I want to congratulate them on their efforts. I thought we could have tackled better. That contributed to some of the splash plays, the big run late. Obviously, we didn’t do enough in that area. We dropped a couple balls, those types of things. But just in general, enough playmaking by them in a close football game. Not enough by us, whether it’s at the end of the game or whether if you look at it throughout. We accept responsibility for that. No major injuries. Just minor bumps and bruises associated with playing.”

You had some big penalties, especially when you were trying to kill the clock late. Was there miscommunication there with Ramon Foster going down field?

“It didn’t look like he was too far down field. Obviously, I’ve got to respect the call made by the officials, but I’ll review the tape before I pass judgment on the quality of that call. Obviously, we run a bunch of those plays and have, not only in recent weeks but over the course of the season. That hadn’t been an issue for us, but I’ll respect his call.”

Regarding the decision to go for it on fourth-and-10:

“Obviously, if we were successful then we could continue on. We hadn’t done a great job of stopping him in the second half, so we weren’t ensured of getting the ball back. If you punt there, they have an opportunity to convert third downs and kill the clock and the game. I thought if we went for it we had an opportunity to continue on. If we didn’t, then whatever was going to happen was going to happen quickly, and we had an opportunity to have the ball at the end, which is what we did.”

Regarding the decision to use the timeout on that play when the clock was already stopped:

“Which one?”

Before the fourth down play.

“We didn’t have enough communication to get the type of call that we were comfortable with right there. We decided to do it in an effort to get a good call and win that down. None of the other things that transpired after that were going to matter unless we got a good call and made every effort to win that down. So, that’s what I did.”

Le’Veon Bell was running the ball well in the first half. Why did his production decrease in the second half?

“They did a nice job. It was the flow of the game or what have you. I’m not going to make an excuse for a lack of productivity in that area. It was what it was.”

Regarding the emotions after a loss when you had the lead late and what it does for the season now:

“I really hadn’t taken the time, obviously, to process it. We understood what was at stake in terms of us and this football game, specifically. We’ll take responsibility for whatever transpires. We understand the gravity of these moments.”

Was Troy Polamalu told to run that missed field goal back or did he do that on his own?

“Absolutely.”

He was told?

“Absolutely. I waived him back there.”

What was Miami doing schematically running the ball because they seemed to be running it pretty well?

“Like I said earlier, I don’t know if it was schematics. Particularly on the big play late, I just thought we didn’t do a good job of tackling. I thought we could’ve done a better job in that area. But you’ve got to give them credit. They blocked hard and they ran hard.”

As that play was unfolding, did you think that Antonio Brown was in?

“I thought he was in, but obviously I didn’t have the perspective of whether or not he stepped out of bounds. I knew he went into the end zone standing up. That I could see. Obviously, his perspective on whether or not he was in bounds or out of bounds over there was much better than mine.”

Emotionally, did you let yourself think you guys had the game won?

“No. I saw his motion before (AB) even went into the end zone. That’s just regular mechanics. You watch the officials that are watching the sideline, particularly in moments like that. He was very definitive and very clear about what he saw over there, so there was no emotional roller coaster ride of any kind whatsoever.”

[Gif] Steelers Lose 34 to 28

The Steelers proved the old ‘game of inches’ adage today with a miracle finish that almost was. The Steelers took the lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a 17 yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery, making the score 28-24. The next few possessions were scoreless, until the Dolphins had an explosive play that set up a short touchdown pass from to Clay from Tannehill, putting the Dolphins up 31-28. That explosive play was a 55 yard run by Daniel Thomas.

The Steelers got the ball back on their own 10 yard line, with just under 3 minutes left. After 3 unsuccessful passes, the Steelers used a timeout on 4th and 10 and decided to go for it. Ben scrambled for 8 yards and the Dolphins took over on downs. The defense held the Dolphins offense to a field goal, making the score 34-28. On the next drive, with a minute left, the Steelers had three unsuccessful downs and found themselves with three seconds left on their own 26. After several pitches and laterals, Antonio Brown took the ball to the house up the sideline. Unfortunately, he stepped out of bounds at the 12 yard line.

Steelers Down 24-21 To Close The 3rd Quarter

The Dolphins opened the quarter with a long drive that resulted in a goal line touchdown run by Daniel Thomas. The Steelers answered back on the next drive, with a couple of explosive plays, the second being a 43 yard touchdown by Antonio Brown making it 17-14.

The Steelers defense came up huge on the next drive when Troy Polamalu intercepted Ryan Tannehill and returned for a 19 yard touchdown taking the lead. The Dolphins answered back shortly after they drove down the field and gained a touchdown. Steelers have the ball to close the 3rd.

End Of 1st Quarter, Steelers Lead 7-3

In what has been a snowy, messy first quarter, the Steelers are on top 7-3. The Steelers chewed up the clock with successful running by Le’Veon Bell, who’s playing well coming back from his concussion. He had 36 rushing yards on 9 carries and 14 yards on 2 receptions.

The Steelers scored on a short pass to Emmanuel Sanders. Ben Roethlisberger surpassed Terry Bradshaw on that play, giving him 213 regular season touchdown passes, the most in Steelers history. Ziggy Hood left the game with an ankle injury on the following drive. His return is questionable.
