Steelers Sign TE Nathan Overbay, Release OT Mike Farrell

The Steelers signed Tight End Nathan Overbay today. Mike Farrell was released to make room on the roster. Overbay was an UDFA out of Eastern Washington in 2010. Originally signed by the Broncos, he’s spent most of his career on and off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Overbay is 6’5, and is reportedly 259 lbs. He is the nephew of former Pirates infielder Lyle Overbay.

One would have to assume that this signing, coupled with Coach Tomlin’s lack of an update for Spaeth this morning, indicates that Spaeth’s injury will be sidelining him for a while. That’s just speculation of course. Hopefully, we get more details on Spaeth’s injury later today.

Joey Porter Arrested

Joey Porter Turns Himself In For Warrant From 1999

Joey Porter Arrested

The Coloradoan is reporting that Joey Porter has turned himself in for an open arrest warrant dating back to 1999. The warrant stemmed from tickets dating back to May of 1999, for speeding and driving while his license was under restraint. He had 3 arraingments that summer, but failed to appear for his final court date in October of ’99- the beginning of his rookie season. Porter returned to Colorado State last week to finish his degree, and join the football staff as an assistant coach. CSU football coach Jim McElwain said he’ll use Porter’s experience as a tool for teaching current players to help them learn to deal with problems immediately. Porter was released on $1,100 cash bond.

Matt Spaeth Injured During Practice

Matt Spaeth was carted off the practice field today, after reportedly getting stepped on or stepping wrong. The details are not yet known. Spaeth, who had his knee drained last Friday, is first on the Steelers depth chart ahead of David Paulson. Paulson is having a good camp and has seen game experience. That cannot be said for any other healthy Tight End on the roster. More details of Spaeth’s injury should be available soon and I will update accordingly.

Steelers Sign RB Alvester Alexander & CB Devin Smith, Waive Curtis McNeal & Cordian Hagans

The Steelers announced today that they have signed Running Back Alvester Alexander and Cornerback Devin Smith. RB Curtis McNeal and DE Cordian Hagans were released to make room on the roster for them.

Devin Smith (5’10” 182) was released last week by the Cowboys, who signed him as an UDFA in April. Smith, who was not invited to the Combine, ran a 4.49 40 at his pro day at Wisconsin.  Smith was viewed as a Nickel Corner by scouts, and was said to be a strong Special Teams player who could fill in at Safety.

Alvester Alexander was originally signed by the Bears last year as an UDFA out of the University of Wyoming, and spent time on the Colts practice squad last season. He was released by the Titans in July. He declared for the draft a year early. His best season at Wyoming was his sophomore year, where he rushed for 792 yards, and 14 TD’s. Alexander by the numbers: 5’10”, 206, 4.39 40.

Steelers Training Camp Injury Report 8/5

The team got some players back today, the most notable being Alameda Ta’amu, who was activated from the PUP list. Also returning to full participation today were Matt Spaeth, Nick Williams, Larry Foote, and Le’Veon Bell.

The following players did not practice today: Troy Polamalu, Larod Stephens-Howling, Plaxico Burress, Ross Ventrone, Terry Hawthorne, Jarvis Jones, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Cortez Allen, Steve McLendon, and Lawrence Timmons.

There was one new injury today during practice. Curtis Brown suffered an “ankle injury of some description” according to Coach Tomlin. Reports from practice were that he hurt his ankle while breaking up a pass during a two-minute drill. He was carted off the field and later seen using crutches.

Today, the team practiced in shorts, and tomorrow is a day off. Mike Tomlin said that he expects the number of men returning to participate in practice will increase on Wednesday.

Alameda Ta’amu Activated From PUP List

Kevin Colbert told members of media at Steelers training camp today that Alameda Ta’amu has been activated off the PUP list and is returning to practice. This is great news for Ta’amu, who has missed all of training camp activities up to this point due to a hamstring injury.  Ta’amu’s return should add an interesting twist to the competition for the backup Nose Tackle position.

Steelers Training Camp- Day 10 Recap

The Steelers wrapped up the tenth day of camp today with a few more guys on the sideline than yesterday. Steve McLendon, Jason Worilds, Jarvis Jones, and Le’Veon Bell were back today, but on a limited basis. Curtis Brown was added to the list of DB’s who were not participating, along with already sidelined Cortez Allen, Terry Hawthorne and DeMarcus VanDyke.

The rest of the list of non-participants:

Troy Polamalu, Ross Ventrone, Curtis McNeil, Adrian Robinson, Matt Spaeth, Nick Williams, Larod Stephens-Howling, Larry Foote, and Lawrence Timmons were out today, as well. Timmons was out due to a death in the family. Coach Tomlin only commented on Troy’s absence saying, “He’s got a contusion to the birth certificate. He’ll be OK”.

The team started with a ‘get right morning’ AKA- the morning off. During afternoon practice, the team worked on various one on one drills, followed by 11 on 11’s. Today featured another day of live tackling, of which both Ben Roethlisberger and Baron Batch expressed the same sentiments during different interviews- ‘it will make the guys better in the long run’.

There were no changes to the first team offensive lines today. Mike Adams was at LT and Marcus Gilbert at RT for the third consecutive day. 2nd team looked like- Whimper, Cheadle, Malecki, Batiste, Beachum.

Ryan Clark had a scare today when he got his fingers caught in David Gilreath’s facemask. Fortunately, they were able to untangle before any significant harm was done.

While some people have raised alarms about Big Ben showing signs of a limp and getting it wrapped, he was said to be moving nimbly and scrambling about just fine during drills today.

The team reconvenes again tomorrow before having Tuesday off.

Training Camp Injury Report- Day 8

Here is a breakdown of the injuries and players who didn’t participate during today’s practice. Coach Tomlin didn’t provide any details or list the players who missed practice today, but these are the players who were listed through various reports.

Le’Veon Bell, Matt Spaeth, Brett Keisel, Jarvis Jones, Adrian Robinson, and Jason Worilds all did not practice today.

Le’Veon Bell had a wrap on his left knee.  He reportedly bruised it while running into another player at practice on Friday.
Matt Spaeth told reporters that he had his right knee drained on Friday, and said it was ‘no big deal’.

Brett Keisel said he was out on a vet vacation day. Jarvis Jones was out and the reason was undisclosed.

Adrian Robinson had his right knee wrapped. Jason Worilds was out again nursing his toe injury.

Ed Bouchette also mentioned Lawrence Timmons and Steve McLendon among the players who did not practice today.

In addition to those mentioned, Ben and Redman did not participate in the goal line drills today. Ben reportedly had his knee wrapped towards the latter part of practice.

CB Terry Hawthorne still out with his injured knee, but he was said to be able to jog around.
