Will Allen Will Be The Starting SS Against The Patriots

Veteran Safety Will Allen will reportedly be getting the starting nod over Shamarko Thomas on Thursday. This comes from Shamarko Thomas via Dale Lolley of the Observer-Reporter.

While Allen isn’t exactly young and quick, he’s seldom out of position. Thomas on the other hand had difficulty at times in the Cover 2 this preseason, which resulted in some big offensive plays.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shamarko on the field and being worked into the fold in different looks, but it appears that the Steelers don’t think that the 3rd year safety is quite ready to cover the deep half of the field against Tom Brady.

Steelers news

Several Sitting Out For Last Practice At Latrobe

The Steelers are holding their second joint practice with the Buffalo Bills tonight at St. Vincent, and the final practice of training camp. Several players are sitting out the joint practice tonight.

Will Allen, Will Johnson, Matt Spaeth, Jarvis Jones, Jordan Zumwalt, Maurkice Pouncey and Ramon Foster are all sidelined this evening. The two Wills are nursing hamstring strains they suffered in practice yesterday. Spaeth has missed the last couple practices for undisclosed reasons. Jarvis Jones and Jordan Zumwalt have been battling with groin injuries, and Ramon Foster has been out with knee swelling. There’s no information available about why Pouncey is sitting out tonight.

Ryan Shazier is nursing a bruised knee according to Coach Tomlin. He is practicing today, but probably only in a limited capacity as has been the case for the past couple days.

Earlier today, Mike Tomlin characterized Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier as questionable for Saturday night’s game against the Bills. Vince Williams, who has been sidelined with concussion symptoms, is suited up and will participate in some fashion tonight.

Will Allen’s Contract Details And Steelers Salary Cap Update

The Steelers re-signed veteran free agent safety Will Allen on Wednesday, but the contract details were not available.  According to reports, his deal was indeed what I expected, a one year dear for the veteran minimum, with no signing bonus. The minimum for Allen this year is $955,000.

Knowing this, I can give you a pretty accurate update on the Steelers salary cap situation. Allen’s $955,000 base salary will displace $420,000 from the current Top 51, making his signing effectively count for only $535,000. Factoring that in to the numbers I provided yesterday after the restructure of Antonio Brown, the Steelers should have a hair under $2.5 Mil in available cap space at the time of this writing.

Going into free agency, the team is going to want to have more money to play with than that. As you’d expect, we should be hearing news on Ike Taylor very soon. Either a reduction in his 2014 salary, or his release. I would imagine he will agree to some form of contract renegotiation that frees up a minimum somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 Mil. The restructure of Lawrence Timmons’ contract is also an easy option for the team to clear more cap space. While they may go for a full restructure to free up almost $4 Mil, I’m expecting that they won’t want to do that right now.

Steelers Reportedly Re-Sign Safety Will Allen

According to his agent, the Steelers have agreed to terms with veteran Safety Will Allen. There has not been an official announcement from the team, but one should come later today. The terms have not been disclosed yet of course, but I expect this to be a minimum deal, with perhaps a small guaranteed signing bonus. That would be the case even if the Steelers hadn’t used the transition tag on Jason Worilds.

The Steelers re-signed Allen in October after he was cut by the Cowboys. The timing of his release really worked to the Steelers favor, as Damon Cromartie-Smith had injured his hip flexor and was unable to play. Allen turns 32 this spring.

DaMon Cromartie-Smith Waived Injured

With the signing of S Will Allen, the Steelers have announced that DaMon Cromartie-Smith has been waived/injured. Cromartie-Smith suffered an injury to his hip flexor during the loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London. Will Allen’s release by the Cowboys couldn’t have been timed better, as he is more familiar with this defense than any active safety not currently on the roster.

Steelers Sign Will Allen

Gerry Dulac of the Post-Gazette reports  that the team has signed S Will Allen. Allen was in for a workout with the Steelers yesterday, after being released by the Cowboys earlier this week. Allen has seen less and less playing time with the Cowboys each week, mostly because they are pretty loaded at the safety position. This signing likely means that Damon Cromartie-Smith’s hip flexor injury would hinder him for a long period of time, and he’ll likely be released.

Will Allen’s signing will be for the veteran minimum. Since he’s played with the Cowboys for the first 5 weeks, the Steelers will only be responsible for the prorated portion of his salar which is $620,000.
