Steelers Practice Report: Bryant Sick, Gilbert Gets Hurt, McLendon Limited

The Steelers are getting some defensive players back into the fold this week as Ike Taylor, Ryan Shazier, Troy Polamalu, and Shamarko Thomas move towards playing this Sunday. Ike was a full participant in practice for the second day this week, so the arrow seems to be clearly pointing up for him to play on Sunday.

After practice, team Dr. James Bradley checked on Taylor. According to the veteran cornerback, Bradley was just checking on him. “I’m ready,” said Ike.

S Shamarko Thomas and CB Cortez Allen both participated fully in today’s practice. In his press conference yesterday, Coach Tomlin said that Allen broke his thumb during a practice before the Tennessee Titans game. The injury required pins to be inserted, and Allen is sporting a protective cast this week. His ability to play on Sunday will depend on how that hampers him this week.

Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier was also a full participant today- the first time since injuring his ankle on November 2nd. Shazier says his ankle is still a little sore, but it’s feeling a lot better via ESPN. “It’s a little sore but I’m just going to listen to whatever the trainers and doctors tell me and be ready.”

Nose Tackle Steve McLendon was limited during practice today due to his shoulder injury. RT Marcus Gilbert was also listed as limited on the injury report. According to Ramon Foster, the two got “tangled up” during a play in practice, and Gilbert took the worst of it.

If Gilbert can’t go on Sunday, Mike Adams will be his replacement.

S Troy Polamalu, DE Brett Keisel, and TE Heath Miller were all given veteran days off today. WR Martavis Bryant did not practice due to an illness.

Troy is recovering from a knee sprain, but is expected to play against the Saints this Sunday.

Monday Steelers Practice Injury Report

The list of Steelers who were limited in practice today is long. Here is the official list released by the Steelers-

Limited:

RB Dri Archer (ankle, knee), RB Le’Veon Bell (not injury related), WR Antonio Brown (not injury related), WR Martavis Bryant (shoulder), DE Brett Keisel (not injury related), CB Brice McCain (groin), DT Steve McLendon (stinger), TE Heath Miller (not injury related), WR Lance Moore (groin), S Troy Polamalu (not injury related), QB Ben Roethlisberger (not injury related), S Shamarko Thomas (achilles, ankle), C Cody Wallace (finger), WR Markus Wheaton (not injury related).

Coach Tomlin talked about the injuries today during his press conference. “We have some injuries to deal with. Dri Archer has an ankle sprain, which will make him questionable. Shamarko Thomas has an ankle-to-Achilles sprain of some kind that’s going to make him questionable. All of the guys who were out vs. the Browns – Lance Moore, Brice McCain, Martavis Bryant – will probably remain questionable. We’ll see where these guys are when we begin the preparation process tomorrow, but the guys who weren’t available against the Browns, the best you could list them as is questionable.”

The Steelers face the Ravens Thursday night at M & T stadium.

Several Players Ruled Out Or Questionable For Thursday’s Game

Coach Tomlin addressed the media this afternoon during his pregame press conference. The Steelers have been fortunate on the injury front so far this summer. Here’s a look at the players Coach Tomlin ruled out for Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

TE Eric Waters (Concussion)

CB Shaquille Richardson (Lateral Knee Injury)

OL Cody Wallace (Finger Fracture)

LB Jordan Zumwalt (Groin)

Tomlin also listed LS Greg Warren (Knee) and OG Bryant Browning (Dislocated Shoulder). Warren isn’t expected to return until mid-September and Browning was waived/injured yesterday. He has until 4:00 pm today to pass waivers.

Coach Tomlin said they’d leave the light on for the following players, some of whom will be an 11th hour decision.

S Will Allen (Hamstring)

RB Tauren Poole (Hamstring)

FB/TE Will Johnson (Hamstring)

CB Devin Smith (Hamstring)

There were some players whom Tomlin did not name, but said they’d hold “some other guys” out as they do during this time of year.

Le’Veon Bell Had MRI Tuesday, No Results Available Yet

The Steelers released a statement regarding Le’Veon Bell’s injury this morning. Coach Tomlin said in the statement that Bell did in fact have a MRI yesterday, but the team is still awaiting the diagnosis. Furthermore, the team is also waiting for the results of a second opinion.  Bell is already ruled out of Saturday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tomlin added in the statement that he will provide updates when they become available in the next couple days. You can draw your own conclusions, but generally minor sprains do not require second opinions.
