Steelers Activate Martavis Bryant, Release Ventrone

As expected, the Steelers have activated WR Martavis Bryant to the 53 man roster this afternoon.

The Steelers had a roster exemption for Bryant who just finished his suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy. The team had until 4:00 this afternoon to make a move on the 2nd year star receiver, and they took all the time they were given. Bryant only practiced with the team last Monday after coming back from Texas, and was ultimately kept out of the game in San Diego due to a minor knee injury.

To make room for the roster move, S Ross Ventrone has been released. Ventrone injured his hamstring during last night’s win over the Chargers. I imagine the special teams standout will back with the Steelers at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Report: Martavis Bryant Is Receiving Counseling In Texas

Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant has two weeks of his four week suspension remaining. The 2nd year standout failed multiple marijuana tests earlier in the year. It was recently reported that the Steelers approved Bryant’s request to work out out of state during his suspension.

As it turns out, Bryant is in Houston, Texas receiving counseling from renowned drug counselor and former NBA star John Lucas. Lucas abused cocaine while with the Houston Rockets, but saved his career after drug rehabilitation. Lucas has helped rehabilitate many athletes and celebrities at his facility in Houston. One of the most recent success stories was Tyrann Mathieu, who sought help from Lucas after he was dismissed from LSU.

Here’s an excerpt from an article on Lucas that was written a couple years ago.

He’s like Mike Tyson with the real, backing you into a corner until you can’t dance around it anymore. You’re forced to admit that you need help.

Help is a 12-step concept of each one helping one another to get back and no one is bigger than the whole. Lucas’ Miyagi mantra is simple: in order to beat drugs, alcohol and overcome any issue, you have to surrender to win. Thing is, you can’t just tell a professional athlete to surrender. It’s foreign, like Rick Ross’ MMG fleet. And to Lucas, no matter how many cheers you get when you tomahawk dunk in the lane, or how many dimepieces troll you on Twitter for groupie love, you’re just another Bozo on the bus. Your ‘Big Dog’ status doesn’t compute in his house. You’re just another guy that needs to improve, get better, overcome flaws and the best way to do it, is believing in a higher power, a spiritual being, someone greater than yourself.

Lucas hammers all of this home while adhering to his four tenets of coaching: motivating, mentoring, counseling and positive confrontation.

“I am the last house on the block in sports,” Lucas says. “When they come to see me, most of the time, they’re not coming on a winning streak. They’re just about a step away from it being over. And the few that we get that are coming like that, get what they want. And those that do the work, come back; and those that don’t, we’ll run you away. We call our gym ‘The Lab’ because we’re gonna put you back together.”

The Steelers hope that Bryant will get the help he needs and will be able to produce at the same level he did last season. It would seem Bryant is serious about taking the necessary steps to be able to do so.

Martavis Bryant’s 4 Game Suspension Will Stand

The NFL will not be reducing Martavis Bryant’s 4 game suspension. The league announced today that his appeal has been denied.

News broke of Bryant’s 4 game suspension last week. The 2nd year receiver was suspended after reportedly testing positive for marijuana multiple times. Kevin Colbert made a statement regarding his suspension today.

“We are disappointed in Martavis’ actions that has led to his four game suspension. It is a disappointment to our entire organization as well as our fans, but we will continue to support Martavis during his suspension.

“It is very unfortunate his actions have put our team in this situation to begin the year, but we are confident he will learn from his mistake and return in excellent shape in week 5.”

Report: Martavis Bryant Facing 4 Game Suspension

According to Adam Schefter, Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is facing a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He will appeal the suspension.

https://twitter.com/BCTBradford/status/636979102524833792

In 10 games last season Bryant caught 26 passes gaining 549 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2014, he averaged 21.1 yards per catch. The Steelers planned to utilize the ’14 4th round pick a lot more this season. The team is already starting the season without Le’Veon Bell and Maurkice Pouncey. Bell and Bryant accounted for 19 of the team’s touchdowns last season.

To draw a four game suspension, a player would have to fail 3 drug tests, or, have failed two tests and been deemed to not be following the corrective measures set forth by the league under the substance abuse policy.

Martavis Bryant Returns To Practice Today

Martavis Bryant expects to return to practice today in Latrobe according to Gerry Dulac of the Post-Gazette.

Bryant has been sidelined for the past week and a half after he underwent a minor procedure to remove an infection from his elbow. Seeing as how he went through pregame warmups in Canton, I expect that he’ll be able to get some reps against the Jaguars this Friday.

Steelers Sign QB Tajh Boyd To One Year Deal

The Steelers have signed former Clemson Tigers Quarterback Tajh Boyd to a one year deal today.

Boyd went from having a first round grade, to being picked in the 6th round by the Jets last year.

https://twitter.com/nfldraftscout/status/373960121845432320

The Jets cut him after training camp last summer.

The 6’1″, 225 lb QB threw for over 3,800 yards each year he started at Clemson, and threw at least 33 touchdowns each of those 3 years. Stats aside, Boyd is a project, and he’ll be battling for that 3rd QB spot this summer. You know, the one Landry Jones has held the past two seasons.

After getting cut by the Jets, he spent time playing in the FXFL last fall. One of Boyd’s former FXFL coaches, who works with NFL QB’s in the offseason, recently said he thinks Boyd could develop on an NFL roster. “He could be one of three, he could be one of four going into camp, and I think his skill set might allow him to win one of those jobs, whether it was a No. 3, and then with time he would grow. And I think he will if somebody has a chance to develop him.”

If nothing else, Boyd will get a chance to throw some balls to his old receiver Martavis Bryant in Latrobe this summer.

Did Not Practice: WR Martavis Bryant (shoulder), CB Brice McCain (groin), WR Lance Moore (groin), OL Cody Wallace (finger)

Full: TE Matt Spaeth (hamstring), LB Sean Spence (knee), LS Greg Warren (knee)

The biggest concern on the DNP list is Lance Moore. With Moore out, expect to see Justin Brown getting time in the slot. Brown played slot at Penn State before he transferred to Oklahoma State, where he was moved outside.

Martavis Bryant Only Player Sidelined With Injury

Coach Tomlin addressed the media this afternoon during his weekly press conference. During the presser, he gave updates on injuries and the outlook was good. The only player to have missed practice yesterday due to injury is WR Martavis Bryant, who is nursing an AC shoulder sprain. Tomlin said they’d ‘leave the light on for him’ to suit up on Sunday, but that seems pretty unlikely.

Tomlin also mentioned several other players who are coming back from injury. LB Sean Spence (knee), LS Greg Warren (knee), TE Matt Spaeth, WR Lance Moore, and CB Brice McCain (groin) are all likely to be available to face the Browns on Sunday.

The team will not have an official injury report until tomorrow afternoon.

Steelers Post Game Injury Updates

After tonight’s shut out against the Panthers, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media and gave some injury updates. There were two injuries of note according to Tomlin. WR Martavis Bryant has an AC (shoulder) sprain. Bryant left the game during the first quarter after getting shaken up on a play.

The other injured player Tomlin spoke of is CB Brice McCain. McCain left the game early with a groin injury. Mike Mitchell left the game with an apparent injury to his right leg. His return was described as probable, but he didn’t return to action after exiting with the injury.
