Report: Bell And Blount Cited For Marijuana Possession, Bell DUI

It is being reported that LeGarrette Blount and Le’Veon Bell were arrested for possession of marijuana today after a traffic stop. Colin Dunlap reports that the two were pulled over by Ross Township police today, and that police found 20 grams of marijuana in their possession. Bell was also cited with DUI according to Dunlap.

The two were in a black camaro with an unidentified woman who was also charged. According to police, they were cooperative. According to AP reporter Will Graves, they were pulled over around 1:30 PM. Police detected marijuana smoke from the camaro, which was operated by Bell. All three in the vehicle claimed possession of the marijuana. Charges will be filed against them through the mail, as the charges are misdemeanors. Bell was taken to the hospital, where he had blood drawn and tested for DUI.

Steelers Training Camp: Day 6- Friday Night Lights Recap

If you would have asked me a week ago who was going to be involved in the first fight of training camp, my answer would have likely contained the names of an offensive and defensive lineman. I would have been very wrong. Tonight’s skirmish took place during a feisty round of backs on backers.

The initial tussle wasn’t very newsworthy. Little fights break out all the time during these drills and throughout training camp. Heck, there were more fights in OTA’s than there have been so far in camp. Le’veon Bell was back in pads tonight and he was first up to defend the quarterback. The role of quarterback was once again played by Joey Porter. Porter was reportedly jumping and giving chest bumps to the linebackers when they’d get the better of a running back.

Back to the fight…Bell was going head to head with LB Vince Williams. The 2nd year RB beat Williams on the first match-up. On the second, Williams drove Bell to the ground. One reporter said that Williams was pinned on top of Bell, and was grinding his facemask into his. Another reporter said that Williams’ facemask had so much force applied to it, that it was pulled through two of the retaining clips.

Here’s where it starts to get interesting. The other half of the double LB backfield didn’t like what he saw. Even though he wasn’t practicing tonight, and was only wearing shorts and a shirt, LeGarrette Blount came running over and dove on Vince Williams shoving him off of Bell. From there a large scuffle broke out, which involved many of the linebackers, running backs, and tight ends. The highlight of it all was arguably when none other than Joey Porter went in and pulled Blount out of the pile. Various reporters said that the two were face to face jawing. A couple thought that Porter and Blount were going to throw down, but the two went their separate ways. Afterwards, Blount and Williams continued to express their grievances at each other from across the field.

It’s awesome that Blount, a guy who is new to the team, is sticking up for his teammate. Blount has been known to have a bit of a temper though, so that’s something he’ll want to keep in check.

Bell was involved in the team drills tonight, and was a target of at least a few passes. Chris Carter filled in at ROLB for Jarvis Jones who was out tonight. Jones had his leg wrapped in a way that suggested he had a groin injury, and coach Tomlin later confirmed it saying it was nothing serious, and the team was just being cautious with him. There sure is an abundance of groin problems this summer. Jordan Zumwalt was seen doing sprints tonight, so hopefully he’ll return to action soon.

Referees were at practice again, and they weren’t conservative about letting the yellow hankies fly. Several flags were thrown tonight. Shaq Richardson, Antone Blake, and Ike Taylor were all reportedly called for interference. Taylor’s came while trying to stop Antonio Brown from making a big play. Several defensive holding calls were made as well. The offensive line units were reportedly much more prone to drawing flags, as multiple flags were thrown for what were mostly false starts.  Mike Munchak must have loved that.

Big Daniel McCullers was used as the special teams wedge tonight. He reportedly made his block on the first attempt, but got his feet caught up on the second, and went to the ground. DE Nick Williams has been hasn’t garnered very much talk so far, but he had a couple nice run stops tonight, and followed them up by pressuring the quarterback. Speaking of quarterbacks, I’m looking forward to seeing Jones and Kay during preseason games, because both have warts. I keep hearing how slow Landry is to get rid of the ball. That’s going to be a problem for him against real opponents. One throw of Ben Roethlsiberge’s had fans cheering tonight. He overthrew his intended target and Troy Polamalu made a awe inspiring interception by getting his fingers under it just before it hit the ground. Fans were also cheering when a pass found Markus Wheaton, who made a fingertip grab while dragging his toes to stay in bounds.

The Steelers resume practices tomorrow afternoon. The ever exciting goal line drills might take place, or they might wait until Sunday depending on how Mike Tomlin feels about tonight.

Le’Veon Bell Returns To Practice And Other Participation News

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell has returned to practice today.

https://twitter.com/DVEMike/status/494928273013342209

Bell missed the last two practices due to what coaches described as “hamstring tightness”.

LB Jordan Zumwalt is still out with a groin injury, and TE Rob Blanchflower of course is out with a high ankle sprain.

TE Michael Palmer isn’t practicing today. TE Matt Spaeth and RB LeGarrette Blount are also sitting out. It wasn’t immediately known why those three were sidelined today.

WR CJ Goodwin has returned to practice today for the first time since injuring his shoulder on the 27th. S Mike Mitchell was doing zig-zag sprints with trainers earlier. It certainly looks like he’ll be making his return soon if he doesn’t have a set back. Stay tuned for more injury updates later today.

Contract Details For LeGarrette Blount And Brice McCain

The Steelers signed CB Brice McCain today. The deal was for one year at the vet minimum, including a $65,000 signing bonus. I can also give you the specific contract details for LeGarrette Blount, who signed with the Steelers last week, as well as a salary cap update that you likely won’t get anywhere else.
Player, Year, Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Salary Cap Number

“McCain, Brice”, 2014, “$730,000”, “$65,000”, “$635,000”
McCain’s contract qualifies for the veteran minimum salary benefit, so his base salary will only count against the cap the same as a 2nd year player’s minimum salary would- $570,000. After displacement on the top 51, his addition will only move the salary cap needle by $140,000.

LeGarrette Blount’s 2 year deal can be seen below. His 2014 cap number is $1.375 Mil.
Player, Year, Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Salary Cap Number

“Blount, LeGarrette”, 2014, “$900,000”, “$475,000”, “$1,375,000”

“Blount, LeGarrette”, 2015, “$2,000,000”, “$475,000”, “$2,475,000”
His signing displaced the top 51 cap number by $880,000. The Steelers had approximately $1.4 Mil in salary cap space before signing Blount on Friday. I know…you’re probably saying, “Steve, you’re wrong. So and so said it was $1 million!” The number that most people are using is from the NFLPA’s public spreadsheet. That number hasn’t been accurate for a while.

The NFL and NFLPA often don’t have matching salary cap numbers, and the NFLPA’s is not official. One major discrepancy is the way in which the NFLPA accounts for players who are designated June 1st cuts. With that out of the way, let’s wrap this up. After the signing of Blount and McClain, the team should be sitting roughly $380,000 under the cap by my calculations.

As you’ve likely realized, the team has enough cap room to sign another veteran for the minimum if they want to, without having to make moves to clear space. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to share with your friends.

A Look At LeGarrette Blount’s Contract Details

The general details of newly signed Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount’s contract have been released. The two year deal is for $3.85 Mil, including a guaranteed signing bonus of $950,000.  The deal also includes a performance incentive of $150,000, which Blount can earn if he gains 800 yards in the upcoming season.

While I do not know the specifics yet, it’s possible that his signing could move the salary cap needle as little as $785,000, leaving the Steelers with over $600,000 in salary cap space (ball park). Here’s a look at how it could likely be set up, and an explanation of the cap estimate.
Player, Year, Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Salary Cap Number

“Blount, LeGarrette”, 2014, “$730,000”, “$475,000”, “$1,205,000”

“Blount, LeGarrette”, 2015, “$2,170,000”, “$475,000”, “$2,645,000”
While I can’t promise his 2014 base salary will be quite that low, you can be certain it will be structured similarly. Using this model, after displacing a low minimum salary from the top 51 (420 K), the salary cap impact  right now would only be $785,000. The Steelers are currently sitting at a little over $1.4 Mil in salary cap space. So, the signing of LeGarrette Blount could leave the Steelers with just under $700,000. I’ll update this when this year’s base salary number is available. However you cut it, this was a good signing at a good price.

LeGarrette Blount Signs Two Year Deal With Steelers

The Steelers have signed former Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount to a 2 year deal today. The veteran running back flew into Pittsburgh last night, and had his visit with the team today. Blount is 6’0″, 241 lbs and rushed for a total of 772 yards with 7 touchdowns last season. He had a tremendous game against the Colts during the playoffs, running for 166 yards and totalling 4 touchdowns.

The terms of the deal aren’t yet known of course, but the Steelers weren’t the only team interested in Blount. The Patriots were interested in re-signing him, and the Ravens were said to be interested before the news of Ray Rice’s indictment yesterday. Earlier today, there were reports of other unnamed teams expressing interest in the running back as well.

One Patriots beat writer reported that the Patriots wanted to retain him, but not at the price the Steelers were willing to go. Obviously, that doesn’t make a lot of sense as the Steelers have little cap room to work with. The Patriots aren’t exactly swimming in dough, but they have more room to play. Another Patriots beat writer reported that New England only offered him a one year deal.

Blount has rushed for 2,711 yards and 20 touchdowns, while averaging 4.7 yards per carry over his four NFL seasons. Blount is a sledge hammer of a back, and a good blocker, but won’t be a part of the passing game. He also brings experience as a kick returner, as some of you might recall from last year’s game in New England. One very interesting note: Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports that Mike Tomlin recruited Blount personally, and was instrumental in his signing.

Report: LeGarrette Blount’s Visit Rescheduled

LeGarrette Blount was scheduled to visit the Steelers on Sunday night and Monday. According to the National Football Post, that visit has been rescheduled to Friday, after the league meetings have concluded.

Coach Tomlin and Kevin Colbert will be at the meetings this week, so Blount would not be able to meet with either of them if the visit wasn’t rescheduled. The Ravens are also rumored to be interested in the running back, as are the Patriots, but I can’t see Baltimore having a legitimate interest in him.
