L.J. Fort Claimed Off Waivers, Zumwalt Waived

The Steelers waived/injured LB Jordan Zumwalt today. Zumwalt has battled the injury bug since last summer. The former UCLA linebacker spent last season on injured reserve. With the open roster spot, the Steelers claimed linebacker L.J. Fort off of waivers from New England.

Fort debuted with the Cleveland Browns in 2012 and played in every game that season. Since then, the veteran linebacker has only seen action in one game, and has been with several different teams. The Patriots waived Fort on Tuesday. He was with the team for 2 weeks.

Steelers Claim CB B.W. Webb Off Waivers, Jordan Zumwalt To IR

The Steelers have claimed former Cowboys cornerback B.W. Webb off of waivers. Webb was waived yesterday by Dallas. The 5’11” cornerback was drafted by the Cowboys in the 4th round of the 2013 draft. This move is very likely related to Brice McCain getting injured last night. McCain left the game early with a groin injury. Webb is a capable special teamer. The Steelers are familiar with Webb. They hosted him for a pre-draft visit last year.

To make room on the 75 man roster, the Steelers have placed LB Jordan Zumwalt on injured reserve. This move doesn’t come as a surprise, in fact, I thought the team was going to do it last week. Zumwalt was sidelined throughout the summer with a groin injury and only appeared in the first of the 4 preseason matches.

Jordan Zumwalt And Shaq Richardson Not Playing Tonight

The Steelers are just about to kickoff against the Carolina Panthers at Heinz Field. Draft picks Jordan Zumwalt and Shaq Richardson will not be playing tonight. Zumwalt (groin) and Richardson (knee) have hardly played during preseason, and the Steelers may likely not want to give other teams more film on the two if they hope to stash them on the practice squad next week.

Cortez Allen and Cody Wallace are also out. Both have finger injuries. With Wallace out, expect Wes Johnson to get lots of snaps at center tonight.

Several Sitting Out For Last Practice At Latrobe

The Steelers are holding their second joint practice with the Buffalo Bills tonight at St. Vincent, and the final practice of training camp. Several players are sitting out the joint practice tonight.

Will Allen, Will Johnson, Matt Spaeth, Jarvis Jones, Jordan Zumwalt, Maurkice Pouncey and Ramon Foster are all sidelined this evening. The two Wills are nursing hamstring strains they suffered in practice yesterday. Spaeth has missed the last couple practices for undisclosed reasons. Jarvis Jones and Jordan Zumwalt have been battling with groin injuries, and Ramon Foster has been out with knee swelling. There’s no information available about why Pouncey is sitting out tonight.

Ryan Shazier is nursing a bruised knee according to Coach Tomlin. He is practicing today, but probably only in a limited capacity as has been the case for the past couple days.

Earlier today, Mike Tomlin characterized Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier as questionable for Saturday night’s game against the Bills. Vince Williams, who has been sidelined with concussion symptoms, is suited up and will participate in some fashion tonight.

Mike Tomlin

Shazier, Zumwalt, Jarvis Jones And Others Unlikely To Play Saturday

The Steelers have a number of players who are nursing some type of minor injury or another. During coach Tomlin’s press conference this afternoon, he somewhat cryptically addressed the injuries and who would play.

“Everyone who’s healthy will participate in the football game. We have a number of guys who aren’t healthy right now, but we’re going to leave the light on for those guys. We’re going to wait until the 11th hour before making decisions whether to play some of them. But our goal is to get full participation to get those guys off to a good start and show what they’re capable of and move forward with the developmental process of our team.”

The players who are considered questionable for Saturday are:

LB Ryan Shazier (knee boo-boo)
NT Steve McLendon (concussion)
LB Jordan Zumwalt (groin)
LB Jarvis Jones (groin)
TE Rob Blanchflower (ankle)
WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion)

If history is any indicator, the first string players who are active Saturday will likely only see 10-15 snaps. With Shazier out, this will mean Vince Williams will get the start, and we’ll get an extended look at Sean Spence. The 2nd stringers are usually in for somewhere between 20-30 plays depending on the flow of the game, depth at the position, and Tomlin’s mood. LB Howard Jones and DE Josh Mauro are a couple other guys who should see additional playing time against the Giants.

Coach Tomlin added that the team will continue to monitor the players who are recovering from injury. “Some of those guys have participated (in practice) in some form or fashion, partially in some instances,” said Tomlin. “We’ll just continue to monitor some of those guys. Our intention is to play those guys if it’s at all possible, but we’ll wait until the last minute to make those judgments.”

Shazier Gets A “Little Boo Boo” And Other Injury Notes

Steelers rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier got a little banged up during a red zone drill today. After a big hit on Le’Veon Bell, Shazier limped off the field where trainers attended to him, and wrapped his right knee in ice. Afterward, Shazier was standing and walking on the sideline, and didn’t go to the lockers.

After practice, Coach Tomlin told reporters that there were no significant injuries today- just bumps and bruises. When asked about Ryan Shazier, Mike Tomlin said he got “a little boo-boo”. Apparently Tomlin isn’t concerned about it.

For the defense, Troy Polamalu, Steve McLendon, Jordan Zumwalt, and Hebron Fangupo were in shorts and didn’t participate. Mike Mitchell of course is still out on the PUP list.

On offense, Ben Roethlisberger and Rob Blanchflower were out for today’s activities. According to Tomlin, there is no update on punter Adam Podlesh.

Le'Veon Bell

Le’Veon Bell Returns To Practice And Other Participation News

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell has returned to practice today.

https://twitter.com/DVEMike/status/494928273013342209

Bell missed the last two practices due to what coaches described as “hamstring tightness”.

LB Jordan Zumwalt is still out with a groin injury, and TE Rob Blanchflower of course is out with a high ankle sprain.

TE Michael Palmer isn’t practicing today. TE Matt Spaeth and RB LeGarrette Blount are also sitting out. It wasn’t immediately known why those three were sidelined today.

WR CJ Goodwin has returned to practice today for the first time since injuring his shoulder on the 27th. S Mike Mitchell was doing zig-zag sprints with trainers earlier. It certainly looks like he’ll be making his return soon if he doesn’t have a set back. Stay tuned for more injury updates later today.

Rob Blanchflower

Rob Blanchflower Has Foot In Boot And Other Injury Notes

Rookie Tight End Rob Blanchflower is sidelined today. He has his left foot in a walking boot.

RB Le’Veon Bell is still recovering from his hamstring “tightness”. He was warming up with the running backs at the beginning of practice, but was not in pads and is not participating today. WR CJ Goodwin is not participating due to his shoulder injury.

LB Jordan Zumwalt is also out due to his groin injury. Ramon Foster has returned from bereavement leave, but Punter Adam Podlesh is still out. His wife is expecting a baby.

I’m sure we’ll get some updates on the injuries from Coach Tomlin later this afternoon. Stay tuned.

Jordan Zuwalt Injures Groin And Other Practice Participation Notes

Jordan Zumwalt sat out for the conclusion of practice today with his upper leg wrapped. According to Mike Tomlin, he was experiencing some tightness in his groin which will be evaluated. With the heavy rains in the area today, the field conditions were more conducive to potential groin pulls.

Martavis Bryant, who was sidelined yesterday with a groin injury, returned to full participation today. Le’Veon Bell sat out today due to tightness in his hamstring. With backs on backers out of the way, it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to return soon. CJ Goodwin also missed practice today due to a shoulder injury he sustained yesterday.

Coach Tomlin said the other men who are sidelined are working to get back soon. Alvester Alexander and Mike Mitchell had a good run with trainers this morning according to Tomlin.

Ramon Foster was expected to join the team today, but he did not attend practice today.

Polamalu, Taylor, And Zumwalt Present Today; One Rookie Absent

The Steelers wrapped up day 1 of mandatory mini-camp today. The men who missed all or most of voluntary OTA’s were in attendance today as expected. S Troy Polamalu, CB Ike Taylor, and LB Jordan Zumwalt were all present and accounted for. There was one rookie however who wasn’t present- Martavis Bryant.

Martavis Bryant, the Steelers 4th round selection, was reportedly home sick today after coming down with a virus yesterday. Markus Wheaton missed some of the final OTA practices, but participated fully today. Dri Archer, however, was sidelined about halfway through today’s practice with a bag of ice on his knee.

Hopefully Bryant’s illness doesn’t sideline him for the entire mini-camp. Rookies need every minute they can get, and as Coach Haley said earlier today, “he’s got a long way to go”.

“[Bryant’s] another rookie, so we’re not anointing him. He’s got a long way to go, because at the receiver position, there are a lot of subtle things that go on, but he’s big and fast and what sets him apart and should give him a chance to succeed is that he gets to top speed fast for a guy that big,” Haley said in an interview earlier today.

Mini-camp continues tomorrow and concludes on Thursday. The team then breaks until training camp begins July 25th.
