Former Steelers RB Isaac Redman Done With Football Due To Neck Injury

After the news of Le’veon Bell’s and LeGarrette Blount’s marijuana charges broke the other day, many people were calling for Isaac Redman to return. No really, they were. Anyway, the calls for his return on social media must have prompted him to reveal that he can no longer play football due to a spinal injury. Here’s what he had to say about it via his Twitter account.

“To those who are wondering why I am not playing anymore. Last season I tried my best to play through a neck injury but I wasn’t myself on the field. After being released I wen Cali to see Dr. Watkins. (donctor who did Payton Manning’s neck surgery) after 2 MRI’s and a cat scan he then told me I had suffered a career ending injury to my spinal cord. Various teams have called but as you can see I was unable to go. I would like to thank all my fans for the tremendous support throughout my career.”

Redman was named starter last year, but was waived by the team on October 21st.

Steelers Waive Isaac Redman, Sign LB Wilson

The Steelers have announced that they have waived Isaac Redman today. Kion Wilson has been re-signed to fill the available roster spot. Redman was named starter over Jonathan Dwyer after hardly playing this preseason. The release of Redman doesn’t really come as a surprise, or it shouldn’t anyway. The writing has been on the wall. He hasn’t been active on gameday since week 3, and has battled with injury/concussion issues during the first few games. Wilson was added to the practice squad October 11th shortly after being released to sign Sylvester.

Isaac Redman Was The Starting RB At Practice Today

As expected, Isaac Redman was the starting Tailback in practice today. Redman, who was named starter until Bell returns from his foot injury, said he will try to make it hard for the team to go with anyone else. Bell told media today that he hopes to be back by week two, but can’t make any promises. According to Redman, the coaching staff doesn’t want to do “running back by committee” this year, and he wants to give them reason not to.

Redman suffered a stinger early in preseason and didn’t make an appearance during the remainder of the games. When asked about being injured during preseason, Redman said:

‘I could have played in the final two preseason games but I was held out by coaches.’

When asked if he was surprised about Dwyer being cut, he said, “I can’t say I was surprised…I knew somebody had to go.”

Coach Tomlin Rules Out 4 For Preseason Finale

During his press conference earlier today, Coach Tomlin ruled out the following players for Thursday’s game against the Panthers:

Jarvis Jones, Isaac Redman, Le’Veon Bell, and Heath Miller.

Jarvis Jones is recovering from an AC sprain in his chest that he suffered during the game against the Chiefs.

Redman is being held out for precautionary measures. He suffered a stinger on the 15th in practice and hasn’t seen game time since , but the team wants to see more from Stephens-Howling, Dywer, and Felix Jones.

Bell and Miller aren’t expected to return in the immediate future, so ruling them out of this week’s game was certain.

Isaac Redman Expected To Practice Today

Redman will practice today after leaving Monday night’s game early with a “stinger”. Assuming he’s good to go, Redman should be getting lots of carries Saturday night against the Chiefs. He is listed as co-starter on the depth chart again this week. When asked about Bell being hurt today, Redman said,

“I prepare week in and week out like I’m the No. 1 guy. Now, with Le’Veon down, I’ve got to step up.”

It will be interesting to get a good look at Redman Saturday night, and beyond that, to see who fills the starting role while Bell is sidelined.

Le’Veon Bell And Isaac Redman Hurt During Practice

Both Le’veon Bell and Isaac Redman were hurt during practice today. Redman took a big hit by Larry Foote, Lawrence Timmons, or the back of a linemen (depending who you ask), during the first play of 11 on 11 drills. Tomlin said it was a stinger. Redman said the same and that he’d be fine.

Bell was finishing a 15 yard run to the outside during a non-contact drill when he was brought down by various members of the defense. Coach Tomlin said he was being evaluated and that he aggravated his left knee that caused him to miss the first preseason game last week. Bell said that he ‘just fell wrong’ and that he would ‘try his best to play’ on Monday. Though his injury was related to contact, the drill was not supposed to be a live one.

Jarvis Jones was also said to have ‘tweaked his groin’ today, but it didn’t appear to be serious. He wasn’t mentioned by Coach Tomlin when he addressed the media.
