Ike Taylor Announces Retirement

Another Steelers veteran has hung up his cleats. This time, it’s Ike Taylor.

Taylor was drafted by the Steelers in the 4th round of the 2003 draft. Over his 12 year career, he started in 135 games. During that time, he amassed 632 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles, and 14 interceptions.

Ike had a kind of loyalty to Pittsburgh that you just don’t see in modern day athletes. “From the time I walked in the door until the time I left, this is where I wanted to be,” said Taylor via Steelers.com. “How the organization is, the locker room, you see why we win. When I became a free agent twice it made my decision easy.”

After taking a pay cut to stay on the team last season, he suffered a gruesome arm injury that sidelined him for most of the season. Shortly after the season concluded, he said there was no other jersey he wanted to wear.

“I can’t explain it, what the Steelers have meant,” he said. “I understand the business. But they gave me loyalty. They let me play my whole contract out.

“I’m going to miss all of it. I will miss the camaraderie, the personalities. Different people from different walks of life, all in one setting, having the same goal trying to be the best. It’s not like that in the regular world, but it was like that with the Steelers.”

Ike says he plans on returning to the Steelers for a coaching internship. He said it’s not official, but after he talks to Mike Tomlin soon, they’ll make plans and iron out the details. The internship should start during OTA’s next month. Taylor also plans on becoming a broadcaster.

Ike Taylor Is Doubtful; James Harrison Questionable For Falcons Game

The Steelers have released the Friday injury report and veteran cornerback Ike Taylor is listed as doubtful. Taylor has been battling a shoulder injury this week, on top of the forearm injury that had him out for most of the season. It seems pretty unlikely that he’ll play this Sunday.

James Harrison is questionable for Sunday. He missed practice early in the week due to a knee injury, and was limited yesterday.

CB William Gay (quad), RT Marcus Gilbert, DE Cam Heyward (not injury related), TE Heath Miller (not injury related), C Maurkice Pouncey (ankle) and QB Ben Roethlisberger (not injury related) are all listed as probable.

The veteran cornerback hasn’t played since suffering a gruesome forearm injury during the week 3 win over the Carolina Panthers.

Regardless of how you feel about Ike’s play this year, his return to the secondary is most welcome.

Steelers Preseason

Shamarko Thomas Ruled Out, Ryan Shazier Likely To Return Sunday

Not much in the way of surprises for the Steelers injury report today. NT Steve McLendon (shoulder), CB Ike Taylor (forearm) and S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring) have all been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Heinz Field.

OT Marcus Gilbert (concussion) is listed as doubtful. Mike Adams will get the start at RT with Gilbert being out. There is no backup OT currently on the 53 man roster, so the coaching staff will have to get creative on the line should one of the two tackles go down. The team used Ramon Foster as an emergency tackle in the past, and I would expect them to slide him over if the need arose.

DE Brett Keisel, S Mike Mitchell, S Troy Polamalu and LB Ryan Shazier (knee) are all listed as probable. This will be the rookie linebacker’s 1st game since spraining his knee 4 weeks ago.

Ryan Shazier Was A Full Participant In Practice Thursday

The chances of Ryan Shazier playing this Sunday appear to be very good. The rookie linebacker returned to full participation in practice today after being limited yesterday.

NT Steve McLendon (shoulder) and OT Marcus Gilbert (concussion) were both out again today. DE Brett Keisel (not injury related) and S Troy Polamalu (not injury related) were given vet days again today.

CB Ike Taylor (forearm) and S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring) were limited again. It would seem that the arrow is pointing down for Thomas’ return to game action this week.

Shazier And Ike Limited, McLendon And Gilbert Did Not Practice Today

The Steelers resumed practice activities today as they prepare to host the Indianapolis Colts on a short week. Here’s a look at the injury/participation report:

Did Not Practice:

NT Steve McLendon (shoulder), OT Marcus Gilbert (concussion), DE Brett Keisel (not injury related), S Michael Mitchell (not injury related), S Troy Polamalu (not injury related).

Limited:

LB Ryan Shazier (knee), CB Ivan Taylor (forearm), S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring)

Earlier in the day, media members and Steelers staffers were erroneously reporting that Shazier had missed practice, but he was actually limited according to the official NFL injury report.

Another noteworthy item on the injury report is Ike Taylor’s return to practice. This is his first time back to practice (albeit in a limited capacity) since suffering that grotesque forearm break a month ago.

Taylor said he did individual drills and cardio today, and that he doesn’t have a timetable for his return. He went on to say, “I feel like I’m a mutant. I got two Wolverine plates in my arm. Just need a little Wolverine blood, I’ll be straight”

Shamarko Thomas And Ryan Shazier Ruled Out For Browns Game

The Steelers have released the injury report for Sunday’s game. S Shamarko Thomas, LB Ryan Shazier, and CB Ike Taylor (obviously) have all been ruled out.

Thomas is recovering from a hamstring injury and didn’t participate in practice with the team this week. Shazier ran in the pool on Wednesday, and participated in a limited capacity at the end of the week, but was ultimately ruled out. Hopefully he returns to the fold next week. Here is a look at the official injury report.

Report: Jarvis Jones Likely Needs Wrist Surgery

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, OLB Jarvis Jones will likely need wrist surgery and is sidelined indefinitely.

Arthur Moats looked good last night, but outside linebacker is one of the most depth poor positions on the Steelers roster.

Schefter also reports that Shazier has a sprained MCL and is waiting on an MRI. It’s difficult to speculate as to how long he could be sidelined without more information, but your average MCL sprain carries a 2-4 week recovery timeline.

With Ike Taylor being out of the picture, expect the Steelers to make a move for another CB.

Ike Taylor Broke His Forearm And Other Injury Updates

Coach Tomlin gave some injury updates during his post-game press conference after tonight’s 37-19 win over the Carolina Panthers. Ike Taylor broke his forearm. Jarvis Jones suffered a right wrist injury and Ryan Shazier suffered an injury to his right knee. Tomlin said that the two linebackers were still being evaluated.

“Obviously we have some adjustments to make,” said Tomlin. “We had some guys go down with significant injuries in this game. Ike Taylor broke his forearm.  Shazier has a knee injury that is being evaluated. Jarvis Jones has a wrist injury that is being evaluated. I’ll let you know more about that when we get back to Pittsburgh.”

According to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, Jarvis Jones says he’ll be back next week.

Here’s the replay of Ike Taylor’s injury. He caught some friendly fire from Lawrence Timmons.

Shazier Out, Zumwalt Returns, And Other Practice Participation Notes

The news on the injury front was mostly positive in Latrobe today. The Steelers got some guys back who have been out for a while. Mike Mitchell was activated from the PUP list, and LB Jordan Zumwalt returned for the first time since injuring his groin a week ago.

TE Rob Blanchflower also returned to practice today. The rookie tight end had suffered a high ankle sprain last week. I’m surprised he’s back so soon; that’s great news for him. LB Ryan Shazier was held out today for the knee injury he sustained yesterday. Hopefully that “little boo-boo”, as Tomlin put it yesterday, doesn’t keep him out for too long.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was out again today as he recovers from his concussion. C Maurkice Pouncey and CB Ike Taylor were both given maintenance days by Mike Tomlin. This is very unusual for Ike Taylor.

LB Jarvis Jones was out again today due to a groin injury. NT Steve McLendon was out for the third straight day. No specifics have been released about why McLendon has been out, but one reliable reporter said he had an illness.
