Lions Cut Drew Butler, Cardinals Cut Max Starks

While teams have until 4:00 pm tomorrow to trim their rosters down to 75, many are already doing so. In today’s cuts, some former Steelers are finding pink slips in their lockers.

Aside from Dennis Dixon, former Steelers punter Drew Butler and long time Steelers tackle Max Starks were waived/released. Starks was battling for a backup position on the Cardinals’ offensive line, but like last year with the Chargers and Rams, he couldn’t find a spot on the team.

Butler made the Steelers 53 man roster last year, but was waived a few days later when the team signed his replacement. The Bears cut him in May, and he was with the Lions throughout training camp. I imagine many Steelers fans will ask “will the Steelers sign Drew Butler?” and I can’t imagine the answer being anything but no.

According to Indianapolis Star reporter Stephen Holder, the move was conduct related.

Without knowing the details, one would have to think it was something fairly serious. The Colts just lost running back Vick Ballard to a season ending injury and Colts coach Chuck Pagano was just talking Rainey up a couple days ago.

The Steelers drafted Rainey in the 5th round of 2012 draft. The team released Rainey last January after he allegedly slapped his girlfriend in the face. Rainey was arrested for aggravated stalking in 2010, when he infamously texted “time to die” to his then girlfriend.

In other former Steelers news, P Drew Butler was signed by the Detroit Lions on Friday. Butler was waived by the Steelers last September after making the final roster cuts.

Lastly, the Browns signed LB Jamaal Westerman last week. Westerman was signed by the Steelers last December, but never wore a helmet on Sunday.

Bears To Release Former Steelers Punter Drew Butler

The Chicago Bears are set to cut punter Drew Butler, according to the Chicago Tribune. The cut could come as soon as today according to a team source. Butler was signed to a futures contract in December, but the Bears drafted former Miami punter Pat O’Donnell in the 6th round of this year’s draft. The team was carrying 3 punters on their roster, so someone had to go.

Butler was All-American, an All-Southeastern Conference selection and a Ray Guy Award winner at the University of Georgia. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Steelers after the 2012 draft. He kicked a total of 77 punts for the Steelers that year, 6 of which were touchbacks, and 26 were inside the 20.

Butler, the son of former Bears kicker Kevin Butler, was waived by the Steelers last September. He won the position battle in camp last year, beating out veteran Brian Moorman, but the team signed former Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko in the end.

Steelers Waive Drew Butler

The Steelers have officially waived Drew Butler and signed Zoltan Mesko. Drew Butler won the battle against veteran punter Brian Moorman, but the team apparently wanted to wait to find a different veteran punter via the waiver wire. Out of 77 attempts for Butler last year, 6 were touchbacks and 26 were inside the 20.

Since Mesko cleared waivers, his salary is negotiable.

Report: Zoltan Mesko To Sign With Steelers

According to multiple media sources, Punter Zoltan Mesko will sign with the Steelers today.  Zoltan was set to make $1.323 Million before being released by the Patriots on Saturday. Zoltan is 27 years old and spent the entire 3 years of his career with New England. In those 3 years, he had a 39.5 net average, with 71 punts inside the 20, and 14 touchbacks. I’ll post more details when they become available.
