X Factor: The DeCastro Saga

Sometimes events are not what they seem.

Coming off of a 2015 First Team All Pro selection, David DeCastro was expected to showcase more of the same in 2016. To further add hopeful credibility to his resume.. players like Geno Atkins, Trent Murphy and Fletcher Cox were waiting for his arrvial within the coming NFL regular season. As such… the time to see if DeCastro’s 2015 All Pro season was not an anomaly came quickly.

Four weeks in however, it sure does feel like one.

According to PFF, DeCastro already has two sacks and two penalties on the year already. Last season.. he had been only credited with 2.5 sacks along with 2 penalties for the entire year. Granted… while some may conceive the notion that players like Geno Atkins and Fletcher Cox give many offensive lineman problems.. this is quite disappointing. It is not like he has lost his All Pro abilities either.

Week 1 was his best performance this far of the season; his dominance against the likes of a rising star in Preston Smith and Trent Murphy no less. Zero sacks.. zero penalties. However, after week one, DeCastro’s level of play fell off a cliff.. literally. Against the Bengals, DeCastro was credited with giving up 1/2 a sack per SteelersDepot; Alejandro Villanueva the same. However.. looking back at the All 22 film showcases DeCastro more than giving up said sack. He had his hands full against Geno and even looked overwhelmed at times. Even though the Steelers would end up winning that bout, DeCastro’s performance left me anxious as a bigger test in Fletcher Cox, arguably the best defensive lineman not named J.J. Watt, awaited him.

Sadly for me, Steelers Nation no less, things did not turn out well for him nor the team.

A 34-3 beatdown of the Eagles was bad enough. A slaughterfest between DeCastro and Cox though confirmed my fears. Throughout the entire game, seldom have I watched an offensive lineman of the talent, caliber and pedigree that DeCastro possess get throughly beat so effortlessly. It was almost as if, by the third quarter, Cox had already won the psychological aspect of the game and purely used his athletic talent and brute force to smash DeCastro to dust. He had displayed great technique, footwork and hand placement the entire game. However, due to Fletcher’s usage of mind games, this affected the timing of his first step out of his stances when engaging considering how wavered he must have been. This was easily the worst performance Steelers Nation has ever seen out of the Stanford Product. After the loss.., I had concluded that maybe DeCastro was ironing out some rust and we would see the 2015 All Pro version in the Sunday Night game against the Chiefs. As a result, he was creditied with giving up 1.5 sacks, two for the season.

Again.. I was wrong.

Yes.. the Steelers did win 43-14.. but for much of the early part of the game, I had noticed that DeCastro was yet again struggling against the likes of Allen Bailey and Dontari Poe. This game would ultimately lead to his second penalty of the season, matching what he had all of last year. He did settle down… but the fact remains is that DeCastro’s first quarter season performance has to have some of you worried as he accounted for two penalties in one game.

This leads to DeCastro being this weeks X Factor.

Again, as odd as it is to place such a player on a list, DeCastro’s level of play has been suspect. To make matters worse, he will be going up against a defensive line that is ominously parallel to what he faced against the Eagles in week three. To start, one could argue that Leonard Williams is not only the best defensive player on the Jets, but possibly the best overall. Already exceeding his rookie total of sacks from three to four, Williams has been a monster upfront for the Jets defense. While his 15 tackles are not too much to write about.. teams generally avoid running in his direction as he is equally stout against the run. To say he is a budding superstar is an understatement and it will not surprise me in the least if he obtains his first Pro Bowl selection.

While Leonard is their best player… this does not mean he is without friends for David and the Steelers offensive line to face. While he has not been on the stat sheet as I thought he would be, Muhammad Wilkerson is still a reputable force in the NFL. Quick as he is powerful.. Wilkerson is able to generate heat from the outside as he is from the inside. Much like Wilkerson though, Richardson is also a player worth watching out for. His sack total is not that impressive at only 1/2 a sack to his name… but do not let that number fool you. Like Wilkerson, Richardson is able to penetrate to wreak havoc against his opposition if left unchecked. Sheldon and Muhammed may not have the stats.. but those two are as good as bookends asnyou are going to find.

One final adversary of DeCastro’s will be in the form of his old friend in Steve McClendon. His nine tackles and two sacks will not amaze you.. but this is his statistically best start to his career. Much of the traits he showed in Pittsburgh’s Okie and Eagle Schemes are now being deployed in Bowles under and over 4-3 fronts along with Bowles unique 4-1-6 looks. While no one will mistake him for Damon Harrison, McClendon is still a quality role player who can get the job done.

While this Steelers team can easily win this Jets game.. they can also lose this game. This game will be decided in the tried and true “battle in the trenches.” Considering that Marcus Gilbert is out and the uncertain status of Ryan Harris, look for Jets Defensive Coordinator Kacy Rodgers to overload both Wilkerson and Richardson on the right side and have Williams along with either Lorenzo Mauldin or Freddie Bishop gunning on the right; McClendon being a plug on rushing situations.

Ultimately, while it will take the entire offensive line to win the game… it will be DeCastro who may ultimately decide the winner of the game.

David Decastro contract

Steelers Pick Up David DeCastro’s 5th Year Option

The Steelers have exercised the 5th year option of David DeCastro’s contract according to Albert Breer of NFL Network.

https://twitter.com/AlbertBreer/status/586210494316470274

This move is pretty much a no brainer. The option gives the team the ability to retain rights to the player, and gives them time to work on a long term deal. For the player, the option amount is guaranteed upon injury.

The guarantee goes into effect March 8 of next year. If the team does not reach a long term deal with DeCastro before then, his 2016 cap number will be $8,070,000. That salary is determined by the average of the third through twenty-fifth highest salaries of offensive linemen.

Adam Schein Thinks David DeCastro Played Poorly in 2013

In an article cleverly titled “The Schein Nine” on NFL.com, Adam Schein lists 9 guys who he thinks need to “put up or shut up” this year. The list goes as follows: 1) Robert Griffin III, 2) Mike Wallace, 3) Trent Richardson, 4) Sam Bradford, 5) Matthew Stafford, 6) Jay Cutler, 7) Morris Claiborne, 8) Dom Capers, and 9) David DeCastro.

Here’s what Schein had to say about DeCastro:

“Everyone once called DeCastro — a steady, sturdy offensive guard from Stanford — one of the safest picks of the 2012 NFL Draft. Well, a knee injury claimed his first season and poor play marred 2013.

Pittsburgh hired O-line guru Mike Munchak this offseason. DeCastro must live up to the billing.”

Poor play marred 2013? Subtract a poorly placed cut block that arguably shouldn’t have been in the playbook on week 1, and DeCastro played like an All Pro for much of the season.

Of the guards who played all their games at right guard last season, ProFootballFocus had David DeCastro ranked 5th. Not that PFF is the end all be all, but it’s not without merit. Aside from that, I don’t know how anyone who was paying close attention last year could suggest that DeCastro “underachieved”. The second year right guard lived up to his reputation of being a technician. Putting DeCastro on the same list as Mike Wallace just adds insult to injury. Mike Wallace- the former Steelers wide receiver who the Dolphins signed to a $60 Mil contract last year, who was hardly a factor for them.

I have to be honest, I struggled with the title of this article. Alternate headlines I considered were “Adam Schein Doesn’t Watch Football- Proof Inside” and “Adam Schein Knows That Schein Rhymes With Nine”. In the end, I figured it best to keep it professional.

Ben Roethlisberger Blows Off Steam In Georgia With His Line

Ben Roethlisberger is working on some male bonding with his starting offensive linemen in Georgia this week. Ben, Maurkice Pouncey, Marcus Gilbert, Kelvin Beachum, Mike Adams, Ramon Foster, and David DeCastro flew down in a private jet yesterday. While the exact location wasn’t disclosed, I can only presume that they are visiting Lake Oconee, GA, where the quarterback owns a lake home.

Thanks to Ramon Foster via Twitter, we get to have a personal look at their excursion.

The team will reconvene on Tuesday, May 27th for OTA’s, so this week is the last hurrah to get some R&R and bonding in before workouts get more serious.

David DeCastro Makes NFL.com’s ‘Under 25 Team’

NFL.com has published a list of their “All Under 25” team. The list is made up of the top 26 rising stars who are under 25. Essentially, it’s a fantasy team who’s members are all under 25. It’s nice to see DeCastro get recognition for his performance this year.

Here’s what the NFL writer had to say about the addition of DeCastro:

“DeCastro, who beat out Cincy’s Kevin Zeitler for this spot, allowed a grand total of 1.25 sacks in 15 starts and was flagged just twice. Pittsburgh ran the ball to his side more effectively, too.”

DeCastro, despite having a bad start to the season, really was a shining star on the line for the Steelers in 2013. ProFootballFocus had the right guard graded as the 5th best starting right guard. (Ramon Foster ranked 6th on the list of starting left guards).

The Steelers selected the Stanford standout with the 24th pick of the 2012 draft.  That August, he suffered injuries to his ACL and MCL in a preseason game against the Bills. He returned to the active roster at the end of November, starting in 2 of the last 3 games.

While he did have a very good season, there were some lows, and there is room for improvement. Mike Munchak will no doubt be able to get the most out of his talents.

Steelers Injury News Is Pretty Good This Week

Coach Tomlin gave his weekly injury updates today, and the news was positive. Kelvin Beachum has an opportunity to get back this week, though he’ll probably be limited during the early portion of the week. Brett Keisel, who is working his way back from a foot injury, also has a chance to get back this week, and will also likely be limited early in the week. He had an extended workout yesterday. The team will watch him closely and monitor his progress throughout the week according to Tomlin.

Tomlin said that the players who worked their way back last week- David DeCastroSteve McLendon, and LaMarr Woodley-  may be limited in practice, but aren’t expected to take steps backward this week. Ziggy Hood suffered an ankle injury in the game but was able to return. He may be limited early in the week. The same can be said for Jerricho Cotchery, who sustained a shoulder contusion during the loss to the Dolphins.

Steelers Thursday Practice Participation Report

It’s looking more and more like Mike Adams will be starting at left tackle this Sunday, as Kelvin Beachum did not practice again today. Steve McLendon also did not participate in practice today due to his ankle injury. David DeCastro was limited in practice today. According to Bob Labriola, there seems to be some hope that DeCastro will be able to play on Sunday. We’ll have a better idea tomorrow of course.

Le’Veon Bell participated fully again today in practice. In regards to Bell, the Steelers PR man Burt Lauten had this to say this afternoon:

Le’Veon Bell has been cleared for full practice, but not to play until passing tests through the weekend. The Steelers medical staff will continue to monitor Le’Veon Bell’s status through the week to make sure he continues without symptoms.”

Bell has passed concussion tests up until this point, but will need to pass medical evaluations this weekend before being cleared to play.

More good injury news: LaMarr Woodley was also a full participant today, coming back from his calf injury. Mike Adams participated fully as well today.

Most Of O-Line Back To Full Practice And Other Injury News

Most of the offensive line returned to full participation today during practice. Mike Adams (ribs), Kelvin Beachum (hip), David DeCastro (ankle), Marcus Gilbert (ankle) and Fernando Velasco (knee) were all full participants today. Ramon Foster however, did not participate again today. Guy Whimper told media that he has been practicing at left guard, and is preparing to start against the Lions. He did add however that, “ I prepare to start every week because you never know. It’s the NFL. Guys get banged up.”

Brett Keisel (foot) and  LaMarr Woodley (calf) also did not participate in practice for the second day in a row.

Steelers Appear To Have Dodged Serious Injury Bullet

Coach Tomlin gave injury updates to the media during his press conference earlier, and the news sounded pretty promising.

Ramon Foster, who left the Raiders game with a concussion, has been cleared to practice. Coach Tomlin said, “We’ll let that practice participation dictate where we go with him. Obviously, with that concussion, we’ll do what’s appropriate like we always do.”

David DeCastro will be limited early in the week, maybe with an opportunity to play with his ankle injury.

Guy Whimper could be limited in the early portion of the week with his hyper-extended knee, but he’s expected to be available for the game and to practice at some point.

Steve McLendon was ill yesterday and was sent home.

Markus Wheaton’s finger fracture is being evaluated to see what his availability will be for the game this week, and for practice.

Lawrence Timmons continues to work through his hand injury, but it didn’t effect his availability during the Raiders game, and it’s not expected to for the Patriots game either.

David DeCastro: “I’ll Do My Best To Get Back ASAP”

David DeCastro was on 97.3 The Fan this morning for his weekly radio interview. When asked about his injury, DeCastro said “I’ll do my best to get back as soon as possible”. He wouldn’t get into the specific details of his injury or how long he expected to be sidelined, but it did not sound like he expected to be available to return this week.

The injury happened in the 3rd quarter when Raiders CB Tracy Porter was blocked into the back of DeCastro’s lower leg. He attempted to play through it with a very noticeable limp on the next play, but subsequently stayed out for the remainder of the game. We’ll know more about his injury in the next couple hours.
