Steelers Make More Cuts As They Work Towards Cap Compliance

The Steelers have trimmed more salary cap space today by releasing/waiving OT Levi Brown, CB Curtis Brown, and LB Larry Foote. These moves, along with the extensions of Troy and Heath, should have them just above the $133 Mil salary cap. It’s hard to say exactly, because we do not know Will Allen’s exact contract details, nor do we have the exact details of Troy’s extension.

Levi Brown

Levi Brown was acquired through trade during last season from the Arizona Cardinals. His contract was virtually risk free, and he was an easy choice for cutting. He injured his triceps muscle during pre-game warm ups last October, and never played a down in Pittsburgh. Cutting him cleared $6.25 Mil in cap space. He was listed as a “Failed Physical” designation on the official transaction sheet.

Curtis Brown

Curtis Brown was drafted by the Steelers in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft. He’s been injured frequently, and disappointing at times when he was on the field. His waiving cleared $645,000 in cap space, but added $130,300 in dead money. He was listed as waived with the “Failed Physical” designation, as well. He underwent ACL surgery in January, so that would make sense.

Larry Foote

Larry Foote signed a 3 year deal with Pittsburgh in 2013. He had two years remaining, but his relatively low signing bonus made him an easy candidate for a cap savings cut. That, his age, and his September biceps surgery that is. Foote was set to count $1,833,333 towards the 2014 cap, and releasing him cleared $1,166,666 in cap space. Cutting him added $666,667 in dead money. Don’t be too surprised if he’s back at some point down the road. I’m not saying he’ll be back, but don’t be shocked if he is.

Steelers Place C. Brown On IR, Make Other Roster Moves

The team has placed CB Curtis Brown on Injured Reserve today. Brown suffered an ACL injury on Sunday, and Coach Tomlin announced yesterday that he was done for the season. To fill the available roster spot, the team has promoted CB Isaiah Green from the practice squad as I expected.

CB Devin Smith has been signed to the available practice squad opening. Smith was brought in by the team during training camp and has been on and off the practice squad this season. You can see more about his comings and goings here: http://thesteelersfans.com/?s=Devin+Smith.

[Audio] Coach Tomlin’s Week 13 Press Conference

Coach Tomlin addressed the media earlier today a day early due to the short week. Tomlin spoke about the Browns game, gave injury updates, the upcoming Ravens game, and took questions from reporters.

On the injury front:

Curtis Brown is out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Steve McLendon will be out this week with a sprained ankle.

Ramon Foster is ‘no worse for the wear’ after returning from his ankle injury.

Brett Keisel, Shamarko Thomas, and LaMarr Woodley are expected to work this week with an eye towards participation. How they respond in practice will decide if they proceed through the week. Stevenson Sylvester isn’t as far along as they are according to Tomlin.

Here is the audio from Mike Tomlin’s press conference.

Steelers Vs Bears Injury Report

The injury report for the Bears game is out, and based on reports, it’s looking more and more like Heath will play on Sunday. He may even start.

Out: Cortez Allen.

Questionable: Le’Veon Bell. Bell practiced again today, and isn’t ruling out playing on Sunday. How his foot responds to today’s practice will be a big deciding factor.

Probable: Curtis Brown, Jarvis Jones, Brett Keisel, Steve McLendon, & Heath Miller.

For the Bears:

Probable: Brandon Marshall, Kyle Long, and Martellus Bennet.

Questionable: Charles Tillman.

Curtis Brown Returns To Practice

CB Curtis Brown, who hurt his ankle last Monday, returned to practice today for the first time since the injury. This is welcome news considering the amount of injuries at the Cornerback position. Hopefully for Brown, he will be able to participate in Monday’s game versus the Redskins. He missed the first preseason game due to the ankle injury.

Steelers Training Camp Injury Report 8/5

The team got some players back today, the most notable being Alameda Ta’amu, who was activated from the PUP list. Also returning to full participation today were Matt Spaeth, Nick Williams, Larry Foote, and Le’Veon Bell.

The following players did not practice today: Troy Polamalu, Larod Stephens-Howling, Plaxico Burress, Ross Ventrone, Terry Hawthorne, Jarvis Jones, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Cortez Allen, Steve McLendon, and Lawrence Timmons.

There was one new injury today during practice. Curtis Brown suffered an “ankle injury of some description” according to Coach Tomlin. Reports from practice were that he hurt his ankle while breaking up a pass during a two-minute drill. He was carted off the field and later seen using crutches.

Today, the team practiced in shorts, and tomorrow is a day off. Mike Tomlin said that he expects the number of men returning to participate in practice will increase on Wednesday.

Cortez Allen To Miss Time After Knee Surgery

Cotez Allen had minor surgery on his right knee this morning, and will miss at least a couple weeks. In a release earlier today, Mike Tomlin also said:

“We wanted him to get the surgery done now so he can begin rehabilitating immediately. This surgery was a minor procedure and will have no long-term effects on his return to the field. We look forward to his rehabilitation process and having him back on the field in a couple of weeks.”

William Gay will cover the left corner spot until Allen is able to return. Curtis Brown says he looks forward to getting the extra reps while Allen is sidelined, and I’d wager Josh Victorian feels the same way.

The Steelers signed CB Buddy Jackson off the waiver wire yesterday, in an effort to add depth to the secondary.
