No Reason For Steelers to Panic

http://gty.im/461058280

The Pittsburgh Steelers got awful news when they learned that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tore his meniscus. He underwent surgery on Monday to repair the damage to his knee, and the timetable for his return is not yet clear. He may miss four to six weeks, but he could heal quickly and be back in a couple of weeks. The only game that he has been ruled out for so far is the game this Sunday against New England. If the Steelers can take things in stride, they should have no reason to panic while they wait for Big Ben to come back.

The Next Few Weeks Are Favorable
Even if Roethlisberger was healthy, the odds would likely be against the Steelers being able to win this Sunday against New England. The Patriots look like a team on a mission since Brady came back from his Deflategate suspension, and so losing this Sunday doesn’t really hurt them. They also get a bye next week, which is perfect timing with this injury to their starting quarterback. The bye means that Roethlisberger has until November 6 to heal up, which is when Pittsburgh travels to play Baltimore.

If Big Ben can somehow come back in time for the Baltimore game, then it will be as if the injury didn’t really affect the team at all. On the other hand, the team has no reason to panic even if Roethlisberger misses additional time. It is not as if the team is not capable of winning without Big Ben.

Lots of Talent on Offense
Roethlisberger is not the only reason that the Steelers record is 4-2. They have plenty of other offensive weapons to lean on. Le’Veon Bell is one of the best running backs in the league, and the Steelers offensive line does an excellent job of opening big holes for him. As long as they can continue to do that, the Pittsburgh offense should be able to keep the team in games even if Roethlisberger remains sidelined for an extended period of time.

The other big weapon on offense is wide receiver Antonio Brown. He will now be catching passes from Landry Jones rather than Roethlisberger, but a change in quarterback won’t slow him down. Brown can gain separation from almost any corner unfortunate enough to draw the assignment of covering him.

While Jones may not be a stellar replacement at quarterback, he is a serviceable one. If he can manage the offense and avoid mistakes, he should be able to lead the Steelers to some victories. He has already shown great leadership by urging his teammates not to panic. If he can show the same poise on the field, the Steelers will handle Big Ben’s absence well.

After all, the Steelers went 2-2 in the four games that Roethlisberger missed with injuries last season. If they can stay around .500 again without Big Ben, they should be in fine shape to make a run at the playoffs when his knee heals up.

Roethlisberger Resumes Practice, Doesn’t Do Any Throwing

Ben Roethlisberger has returned to practice today after suffering an AC joint sprain during Saturday night’s victory over the Bengals. “I am not going to do any throwing,” Roethlisberger told reporters today just before practice. “I will do some hand off work and stuff like that.”

Roethlisberger told the media yesterday that he hasn’t thrown a football since Saturday. He was limited to watching practicing while doing ‘mental reps’ yesterday, and describes his status for Sunday as ‘hour to hour’.

Landry Jones has had a heavy work load this week in practice. The journeyman quarterback will get his first career playoff start if Big Ben isn’t ready to go against the Broncos.

Report: Roethlisberger To Miss 4-6 Weeks With MCL Sprain

Ben Roethlisberger left the Rams game in the 3rd quarter today after suffering an injury to his left knee. It didn’t look good. No flag was thrown.

After the game Coach Tomlin said he would receive an MRI tonight to determine the severity of his injury. According to Adam Schefter, the MRI revealed an MCL sprain and a bone bruise. A team source said that the Steelers expect him to miss 4-6 weeks. Pretty good news all things considered. If you were watching the game, it seemed like Roethlisberger’s season might be over.

[Audio] Ben Roethlisberger On The Win Over The 49ers

Ben Roethlisberger was on 93.7 The Fan this morning talking about a variety of topics, but mostly about different aspects of the win over San Francisco on Sunday.

During the 15 minute interview, Ben talked about what they could have done better during their win on Sunday. The quarterback said that while they’re coming off of a fun win, they still look at it with a critical eye as they strive for perfection.

“There were some penalties that hurt us, and ‘3 and outs that shouldn’t have been'”, he said. “I made a bad call in the no huddle that resulted in a 1 yard run, that would have resulted in more if I checked out of the play. I missed Markus (Wheaton) on the sideline one time…that frustrates me.”

Big Ben went into some of the decision making that goes into the no huddle offense and the two point conversions. The quarterback also had lots of praise for Darrius Heyward-Bey, calling him “a selfless player”.

Tomlin: Healthy Vets Will Play Friday

The Steelers head to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars Friday night. Coach Tomlin said in a brief press conference earlier today that the game will feature veteran players who are healthy enough to play. “Our intentions are that all healthy men will play in the football game,” said Tomlin.

This is a marked contrast from the Hall of Fame game, which had several vets watching from the sideline. As you’d expect for the real preseason opener, many of the veteran headliners won’t get a lot of playing time. Ben Roethlisberger will get somewhere around 10-12 snaps, and the other QB’s, Jones, Murphy, and Boyd, will share the remaining playing time.

Tomlin also ruled out some players for Friday’s match up. Aside from the players still on PUP, Vince Williams (hamstring), McCullers (hamstring), Ventrone (ankle), and Golden (knee) will all be sidelined due to their respective injuries.

Roethlisberger’s New Deal Is 5 Years, $99 Mil

The Steelers signed Ben Roethlisberger to a new contract yesterday. The financial details are starting to surface, and the total value is reportedly $99 Mil, and could reach $108 Mil after escalators.

If these numbers are correct, it makes Ben the second highest paid player behind Aaron Rodgers. In terms of new money, Rodgers’ contract sits at $22 Mil and Ben’s is $21.85 Mil. According to Albert Breer, Roethlisberger’s new deal pays $65 Mil over the first three years (’15,’16, and ’17) which is a record.

It’s difficult to say how his new deal will change his impact on the 2015 salary cap. His 2015 base salary was $11.6 Mil, and his cap hit was $18.395. I have a hard time imagining his 2015 cap hit will go up very much, if at all. The deal can be structured in lots of ways, and it’s even possible that it could go down slightly.

As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk points out, Friday afternoon is generally reserved for teams and agents to drive by slowly while throwing bad news at the media’s doorstep, in hopes it won’t get the attention it normally would. So, it is a little odd that the deal was announced when it was, without any hint of financials. Florio suggests that this indicates that it was a team friendly deal, but that’s a bit of a deductive leap.

“It’s kind of hard to contain my smile when I’m excited to be at a place like this, to be home, and to be able to be here for my whole career,” said Roethlisberger via Steelers.com. “I know most of you have heard me say for a long time that this is where I have always wanted to be and where I have wanted to spend my whole career. This organization has given me an opportunity to do that. I just feel very blessed to have the opportunity to play for such a great franchise, with great coaches, great teammates, and the best fans in the world. I’m extremely happy that we got a deal done. It’s incredibly fair for both sides. We are just excited to move forward and get some more Lombardi trophies in that room next door.”

Roethlisberger added that he believed it was a fair deal. “I think it was an easy deal to get done from what I have heard from my representatives and then talking to the Steelers,” said Roethlisberger. “Easy deals that get done quickly are fair deals.

Steelers Hope To Extend Roethlisberger “The Sooner The Better”

Staying true to what he said last year, Steelers team president Art Rooney II confirmed his plans to extend QB Ben Roethlisberger during this off-season. While the Steelers have been known to extend their quarterbacks typically two years before their contracts expire, Art Rooney II told Ben Roethlisberger last year that they planned to extend him after the 2014 season.

“The sooner the better,” said Rooney in a meeting with local media this morning when asked when they wanted to extend Roethlisberger. While making it clear that it was a priority, Rooney refused to put a time table on the new deal.

“Obviously we would like to get it done this offseason, and I think it’s fair to say the sooner the better,” said Rooney via Bob Labriola, “but I’m not going to put any particular time frame on these things.

It’s kind of hard to predict how long it takes to get something done, but we certainly want to get something done this offseason. That’s for sure. It takes two to tango when it comes to contract negotiations. I’m not expecting a problem, but again, I hate to put predictions on those kinds of things.”

Last year, the Steelers believed the cap would go up in 2015 (which it will), and that played a large part in their decision to hold off on extending Roethlisberger.

“We believe the cap will go up again next year,” said Art II last year, “and so from a cap planning standpoint, next year will be a better situation for us to address a franchise quarterback type of contract.”

It’s hard to say exactly how Ben’s new deal will be structured. After having coming off a career season, his value definitely went up. I wouldn’t expect his 2015 cap number to change dramatically one way or the other, though. Roethlisberger’s slated to carry a cap number of $18,395,000 in 2015.

Ben Roethlisberger Will Miss The Pro Bowl, Won’t Require Surgery

Ben Roethlisberger will not be playing in the Pro Bowl in Arizona later this month. According to the New Orleans Saints website, Drew Brees will be taking his place.

This is the third time in Ben’s career that he has been voted to the Pro Bowl. Somewhat ironically, Brees is tied with Roethlisberger for the league high of 4,952 passing yards. In a statement from Roethlisberger’s agent (via ESPN), the Steelers quarterback is being kept out as a precaution, but will not require offseason surgery.

“Ben was instructed by team doctors to avoid strenuous activity due to inflammation in his knee, thus he will not play in the Pro Bowl,” Ryan Tollner wrote to ESPN. “His knee will not require surgery and he looks forward to an otherwise healthy offseason to improve with his teammates.”

Ben Roethlisberger Is Battling A Stomach Bug

According to NBC’s Michele Tafoya, Ben Roethlisberger is battling a stomach bug tonight. The Steelers starting quarterback was not on the field for warmups. Landry Jones is inactive tonight, and Bruce Gradkowski was the only QB on the field for warmups.

The Steelers are calling it a minor stomach virus, and plan to start Roethlisberger. Hopefully, he’s taken as much Imodium as physically possible.

Ben Roethlisberger Named AFC Offensive Player Of The Week Again

Ben Roethlisberger has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row. Roethlisberger threw 6 touchdowns and 340 yards during Sunday’s routing of the Baltimore Ravens. Over the past two games, Big Ben has thrown for 862 yards and 12 touchdowns. On his stellar performances from the past two weeks, Roethlisberger said, “For right now, there is no time to look back, we have to always look forward.”

This is the first time the Steelers quarterback has been named AFC OPOTW for back to back weeks. The last Steelers player to receive the AFC player of the week nod twice in a row was Troy Polamalu in 2010, for his performances in weeks 13 and 14.
