CJ Goodwin was the young virtually unknown WR that Mel Blount went to bat for, asking the steelers to give him a shot.

He hung around for a year on the PS I think but that was it.

This year the Falcons have him a tryout but not at WR but Cornerback..... And he made the 53 and is 1 of only 4 CB that they carried.

No way you can't convert a WR to CB in the NFL ...Just playing I watched him play the position and he is catching on quick, there are a couple of College QB'S playing DB'S as well in the NFL....And I think like 4 or 5 more WR'S converted to DB as well..It's like Coach T stated most of these guys are capable of playing multiple positions if they have the right mindset .....

We missed on him because we thought we had good CB'S that's my take..

My apologies sir, I didn't know there was a thread on him already started by you.

Tony Dungy was a college QB we turned into a DB way back when.

Richard Sherman was a failed WR. I hope CJ has a good career playing CB and if he does I'll blame the Steelers for not being able to think outside the box and evaluate hidden talent ...

    What had happened was......

We cut CJ last year and kept 1 DB and 2 WR on the PS.... The Falcons added him to their PS and during the year he tried to guard Julio Jones in practice, it caught the coaches eye, they thought " we might have something here because guarding Julio isn't the easiest thing in the world" so this year in rookie mini camp they moved him to CB and gave him an honest opportunity and it seems he has taken advantage of it.

I Love stories like this ! Underdogs overcoming and making it...... Just wish it had happened here...

nix was a D-lineman at kent. ike taylor was a RB/WR in college before moving to CB. good athletes with something upstairs can play a lot of positions. hines played multiple positions too.

Yep it is a great story and it speaks to the character of CJ ....A real Football player , he didn't care what position he played he just wanted to play ball and was willing to do whatever the coach needed ...I also hope CJ has a good career and I really wished it would have been here as well..

You're right Mac , Hines was a QB I think as was Antwan Randell El...... Don't forget Big Al either ........

Wasn't DHB a track star we've been trying to teach how to catch for a few years now???? Sorry!!! Couldn't resist the last one... LOL

If Goodwin has success, then the Steelers should make sure that Mel Blount is doing draft scouting.
Have him pick out WRs that he likes, and the team will know which players to draft as DBs. :towel:

That's awesome, good for him. A true position change in the NFL is incredibly rare, particularly to the other side of the ball.

From the story, it seems that nobody had considered playing him at CB until he got to Atlanta, so I doubt that came into it.

For me it makes sense that a QB could play DB from an "intellectual" standpoint anyway. I mean they have spent their whole lives watching them. However from an "athletic" standpoint in the NFL it seems like a stretch. I think it was Deion who said that CB is nothing but a WR that can't catch.

I agree with this ,but a true Athlete at QB can probably make the switch....I don't think your standard pocket QB can play DB ....As you stated they may have the brains but they lack the skills...
