Steelers Sign WR Lance Moore To 2 Year Deal

The Steelers have announced that they have agreed to terms with former Saints wide receiver Lance Moore. This is a good addition to a depleted wide receiver corps.

Moore is coming off a down year, but has been very productive in the past. 2012 was a huge year for him, where he averaged 16 YPC. Various factors led to his drop in production in 2013 including a nagging wrist injury and being behind names like Colston, Sproles, and Jimmy Graham on the roster. I think Steelers fans will be happy about this signing in the fall.

Steelers Sign DT Cam Thomas To 2 Year Deal

According to his agent, the Steelers have signed DT Cam Thomas to a 2 year deal today. Thomas hit free agency this year after playing 547 snaps for the Chargers last year. San Diego drafted him in the 5th round of the 2010 draft, but he didn’t really see a starting role until last year. He lost the starting job in week ten to Sean Lissemore.

The details of the deal are obviously not yet known, but don’t expect it to break the bank. Try to resist the urge to draw too many conclusions from this signing. After the loss of Ziggy Hood and Al Woods, the team is very thin on the defensive line. More visits will be in the team’s future.

Steelers Re-Sign Greg Warren And Cody Wallace

The Steelers announce that they have re-signed LS Greg Warren and OL Cody Wallace. The Steelers originally signed Warren as an UDFA in 2005, and he has been with the team ever since. His signing is for 1 year, most likely for the veteran minimum and apx. a $65,000 signing bonus.

Cody Wallace has been signed to a 3 year deal. Don’t expect this contract to break the bank either. Wallace played in 9 games for the Steelers in 2013. He’s shown versatility as a swing man, who can play both guard and center. Wallace was originally drafted by the 49ers in the 4th round of the 2008 draft, and spent 2 years there. After that, he bounced around on practice squads for a couple seasons before ultimately being signed by the Steelers last year.

He’s described as a soft spoken man who plays with a mean streak. No doubt most of Steeler Nation remembers the play that made him famous last year.

Steelers To Sign FA Safety Mike Mitchell

According to league sources, the Steelers are signing former Panthers safety Mike Mitchell. Mitchell confirms this on Twitter.

Mitchell is listed as a strong safety, but played most of 2013 at free safety after Charles Godfrey suffered an achilles injury. Mitchell was drafted by the Raiders in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft. He signed a one year deal with the Panthers last year for $1 Mil, with $250 K guaranteed.

Last year, Mitchell totaled 4 interceptions, 3 sacks, and 45 solo tackles. According to ProFootballFocus, Mitchell was tied at the top of the list of safeties with the most missed tackles at 18, though he also is considered one of the best blitzing safeties, and his coverage skills are pretty good. Last year, 1 touchdown was allowed in his coverage area.

According to Adam Schefter, Mitchell’s contract is for 5 years, and totals $25 Mil.

Steelers Sign WR Danny Coale To Futures Contract

The Steelers have signed WR Danny Coale to a reserve/futures contract. Coale, 6′ 0″, 190 lbs, was originally drafted by the Cowboys in the 5th round of the 2012 draft. The former Virginia Tech receiver spent time on the Cowboys and Colts’ practice squads last year.

Scouts touted Coale abilities as a possession receiver coming out of college, with his route understanding being one of his strong points. Blocking was one of his weaknesses, particularly in the run game. He’s had a couple years to work on that in the NFL though, so we’ll see how he’s come along in that regard.

Steelers Sign LB So’oto And RB Poole To Futures Contracts

The Steelers announced a couple roster moves today. LB Vic So’oto and RB Tauren Poole have been signed to reserve/futures contracts.

So’oto played college ball at BYU, and was signed in 2011 as an undrafted free agent by the Green Bay Packers. The 6’3″, 263 linebacker was released by the Packers a year later, and went on to spend time on practice squads with the Raiders, Packers, and Redskins. He was with the Cardinals last season before being sent to IR after suffering from a chest injury.

Tauren Poole was originally signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Poole measures in at 5’11” and 213 pounds. He spent the 2012 season on the Panthers IR due to a rib injury. The former Vols running back was released by the Panthers after an underwhelming 2013 training camp, and was later signed to the Colts practice squad.

Steelers Sign WR Jasper Collins, S Jordan Dangerfield

The Steelers have signed wide receiver Jasper Collins and safety Jordan Dangerfield to reserve/futures contracts.

Jasper Collins is a 5’10”, 190 lb receiver out of Mount Union college. The same small school that produced Pierre Garcon. Collins was undrafted and signed by the Dolphins last spring, though he was waived/injured during training camp. Later he was signed to the Browns practice squad before going back to join the Dolphins on their scout team.

I watched some of Collins tape last year. He is undersized, and will mainly see activity in the slot. He has fluid hips and is capable of explosiveness, though as with many undersized receivers, he struggles in press coverage.

Jordan Dangerfield is 5’11”, 199. Dangerfield also went undrafted last year. He was signed by the Bills and was released at the end of their training camp.

Steelers Reportedly Sign DL Al Lapuaho To Futures Contract

While not officially announced, the Steelers have reportedly added another player to a reserve/futures deal. Al Lapuaho has been signed after visiting for a work out with the team according to a source. The defensive lineman is listed as 6’3″, 297 lbs. He is an undrafted second year player out of Utah State, who was signed by the Rams last year, but waived during training camp cuts. He was most recently on the Dolphins roster.

*Edited to add- the team has officially announced his signing.

Steelers Sign RB Miguel Maysonet and WR Lanear Sampson

On top of the Reserve/Futures signings I posted this morning, the Steelers have also signed RB Miguel Maysonet and WR Lanear Sampson to reserve/futures contracts.

RB Miguel Maysonet was an UDFA out of Stony Brook who has bounced around on various practice squads this year. He’s a guy who I touted to pick up as an UDFA last spring, as I thought he would be a great candidate to excel in a ZBS. He is 5’9″, 209 lbs and ran a 4.6 40 at his pro day. Some draft scouts compared him to Alfred Morris.

WR Lanear Sampson was signed by the Colts as an UDFA out of  Baylor. He’s 5’11”, 204 lbs and ran a 4.40 40 yard dash. He was cut by the Colts when they made their final roster selections, but was later added to the Cowboys practice squad. He’s very fast, but some scouts noted he’ll need coaching in his routes.
