Steelers Waive C David Snow, Sign RB Josh Harris

The Steelers have waived offensive lineman David Snow injured today. Snow fractured his foot in practice on Saturday, which will require corrective surgery. The way that the waived/injured list works is that the player will go on waivers. If no team claims him in 24 hours, he will either go on injured reserve or the team will reach an injury settlement with him, leaving him free to find a landing spot with another team. The injury settlement is the more likely scenario for Snow in my opinion.

To fill the available roster spot, the Steelers have signed former Wake Forest running back Josh Harris. Harris is listed at 5’11, 210 lbs in the Wake Forest media guide. He was with the Wake Forest track and field team for 3 years. According to Harris, there was some confusion about his 4o time at the Wake Forest Pro Day. “Several scouts had me running the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds, but the NFL Network reported me at a 4.46. So I was upset about that.” He did the bench press 28 times, had a broad jump of 9’11”, a 35.5″ vertical, and a 1.57 10 yard split.

Harris finished his college career with 489 carries, 2,230 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. He also has some very limited experience with kick returns. While not really the best way to evaluate a player, here is a highlight reel to see him in action.

Steelers Cut LB Kion Wilson, Sign DB Lew Toler

The Steelers have made a couple roster moves on the eve of training camp. According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, the team has cut linebacker Kion Wilson. Wilson saw a helmet for 7 games last season, and spent time on the practice squad as well.

The Steelers have added cornerback Lew Toler to fill the available roster spot. Toler was with the team for tryouts during rookie mini-camp. The 5’11”, 190 lb defensive back ran a 4.61 40 at his pro day workout, and recorded a 31.5″ vertical and 9’11” broad jump.

Second Round Pick Stephon Tuitt Signs Rookie Contract

The Steelers last remaining unsigned rookie has signed his contract this morning. Second round pick DE Stephon Tuitt is now under contract. I figured the front office was going to push to finalize this deal before everyone goes on summer vacation when mini-camp breaks.

While the specifics of the deal are not available yet, I can give you a pretty accurate projection. Here are the estimates I made a month or so ago.
Player, Total Value, Signing Bonus, 2014 Cap Hit

Stephon Tuitt, “$4,607,953”, “$1,733,000”, “$853,250”
Since then, all but four 2nd round picks have signed their deals. I can say that Tuitt’s signing bonus estimate might be a tad high, and his cap number may end up being a little lower than the $853K I originally predicted.

Steelers Announce Dri Archer Signing

The Steelers officially announce what I reported yesterday– 3rd round pick Dri Archer has been signed.
https://twitter.com/steelers/status/477461988801409025

With Archer now under contract, Stephon Tuitt is the only remaining unsigned draft pick. While the CBA makes rookie signings much easier than they used to be, there is some wiggle room in his contract, which is what is likely causing the delay in his signing.

According to the National Football Post, the total value of Archer’s four year deal is $2,748,000, with a signing bonus of $506,016. My estimates from last month were a little off. The signing bonus money was a couple hundred dollars off, and the total value was less. Here is how Archer’s contract effects 2014.
Base Salary, Prorated Bonus, 2014 Cap Hit

“$420,000”, “$126,504”, “$546,504”
After displacement, his signing should only move the 2014 salary cap needle by $51,504.

Report: Dri Archer Signs Rookie Contract

The Steelers have signed their 3rd round pick Dri Archer today, according to ESPN reporter Field Yates. The team has not made an official announcement yet.

https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/477184715556806656

With the signing of the speedy running back, the team only has one draft pick who remains unsigned, and I imagine Stephon Tuitt will be doing so in the near future. Here is a look at the salary cap numbers I’ve projected for Archer.
Player, Total Value, Signing Bonus, 2014 Cap Hit

Dri Archer, “$2,906,784”, “$506,376”, “$546,594”
As you can see, Archer’s 2014 salary cap impact is minimal. After displacement of the top 51, he should only move the 2014 Steelers salary cap needle by $51,594 (give or take) by my estimation. I’ll update when the specific numbers are available.

Steelers Agree To 5 Year Extension With Maurkice Pouncey

According to various media reports this morning, the Steelers and center Maurkice Pouncey have agreed in principle to a five year extension.
https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/status/477078744230666240

The exact contract details obviously aren’t available yet, but the initial numbers point towards Pouncey becoming the highest paid center in the NFL, in terms of new money. Preliminary reports indicate that the 5 year extension is worth just over $44 Mil, and includes a $13 Mil signing bonus. With the last year of his rookie deal remaining, it’s six years for just over $48 Mil.

The Browns signed Alex Mack to a 5 year, $42 Mil contract last year matching the Jacksonville Jaguars offer sheet. The Steelers are obviously happy with Pouncey’s knee recovery, and wanted to lock up their star center before he became a free agent next year.

Steelers Announce Signing Of Martavis Bryant

Confirming the report from earlier today, the Steelers announce that 4th round pick Martavis Bryant has been signed.
https://twitter.com/steelers/status/476098949644701697

While the exact details of the deal haven’t been announced, I can tell you with a great amount of certainty that the details of the 4 year deal will look like this:
Player, Total Value, Signing Bonus, 2014 Cap Hit

Martavis Bryant, “$2,723,198”, “$439,220”, “$529,805”
After displacement, his signing should only move the 2014 salary cap needle by approximately $34,805. Now that Bryant is signed, there are only two remaining picks left to get under contract. Second round pick Stephon Tuitt and 3rd round pick Dri Archer should be signing their contracts in the very near future.

Report: Martavis Bryant Expected To Sign Contract Today

According to Yahoo Sports reporter Rand Getlin, Steelers rookie receiver Martavis Bryant is expected to sign his contract today.
https://twitter.com/Rand_Getlin/status/476060155029626880

While these kinds of reports often don’t prove to be accurate, and should only be taken with a grain of salt, it’s not surprising. I’d expect any of the team’s remaining draft picks to sign at any time now. As I projected a few week’s back, Bryant’s four year contract should have a total value of roughly $2,723,198, and carry a 2014 cap number of $529,805. That will barely impact the salary cap due to displacement of the top 51.

Bryant, who was signed with the team’s fourth round pick, is accompanied by Stephon Tuitt and Dri Archer as the remaining unsigned draft picks. You can see their projected contract values here: http://thesteelersfans.com/2599/breaking-rookie-salaries-cap-implications/

Steelers Sign First Round Pick Ryan Shazier

The Steelers announce that they have signed first round draft pick Ryan Shazier today.
[xyz-ihs snippet=”ShazierInstagramsigning”]

The signing of Shazier means that 6 of the 9 members of this year’s draft class are now under contract. Shazier’s contract will be for four years, with the option for a fifth year. The terms of the deal will look essentially like this-
Player, Total Value, Signing Bonus, 2014 Cap Hit
Ryan Shazier, “$9,507,198”, “$5,234,328”, “$1,728,582”
Expect the team to sign Tuitt, Archer, and Bryant (not necessarily in that order) in the very near future. If you’re curious about their salary cap numbers, I laid out the estimates for their contracts a few weeks ago. Steelers Waive WR Jasper Collins, Sign WR CJ Goodwin

The Steelers make it official this morning and announce that they have signed former California University WR CJ Goodwin.
https://twitter.com/steelers/status/474191412162875392

WR Jasper Collins has been waived to make room on the roster. Collins was a small, small school receiver who saw time with the Dolphins and Browns last year, before being signed to a futures contract by the Steelers in January.
