Steelers Injury News Is Pretty Good This Week

Coach Tomlin gave his weekly injury updates today, and the news was positive. Kelvin Beachum has an opportunity to get back this week, though he’ll probably be limited during the early portion of the week. Brett Keisel, who is working his way back from a foot injury, also has a chance to get back this week, and will also likely be limited early in the week. He had an extended workout yesterday. The team will watch him closely and monitor his progress throughout the week according to Tomlin.

Tomlin said that the players who worked their way back last week- David DeCastroSteve McLendon, and LaMarr Woodley-  may be limited in practice, but aren’t expected to take steps backward this week. Ziggy Hood suffered an ankle injury in the game but was able to return. He may be limited early in the week. The same can be said for Jerricho Cotchery, who sustained a shoulder contusion during the loss to the Dolphins.

Woodley, Bell, And DeCastro All Probable For Sunday

Good news on the Steelers injury front today- LaMarr Woodley (calf), Le’Veon Bell (concussion), and David DeCastro (foot) are all listed as probable for the Dolphins game this Sunday.

Woodley spoke about starting after practice, “I’ll be starting. It will be based on how I feel. You don’t want to fatigue it and reinjure it. We’ll be smart about it.” Right guard David DeCastro also plans on starting. “Yeah, I’m gonna go.”, said DeCastro after practice.

LT Kelvin Beachum (knee) is doubtful and NT Steve McLendon (ankle) is questionable. Brett Keisel (foot) has been officially ruled out, though coach Tomlin said as much earlier in the week.

Steelers Thursday Practice Participation Report

It’s looking more and more like Mike Adams will be starting at left tackle this Sunday, as Kelvin Beachum did not practice again today. Steve McLendon also did not participate in practice today due to his ankle injury. David DeCastro was limited in practice today. According to Bob Labriola, there seems to be some hope that DeCastro will be able to play on Sunday. We’ll have a better idea tomorrow of course.

Le’Veon Bell participated fully again today in practice. In regards to Bell, the Steelers PR man Burt Lauten had this to say this afternoon:

Le’Veon Bell has been cleared for full practice, but not to play until passing tests through the weekend. The Steelers medical staff will continue to monitor Le’Veon Bell’s status through the week to make sure he continues without symptoms.”

Bell has passed concussion tests up until this point, but will need to pass medical evaluations this weekend before being cleared to play.

More good injury news: LaMarr Woodley was also a full participant today, coming back from his calf injury. Mike Adams participated fully as well today.

Bell Was A Full Participant In Practice Today And Other News

RB Le’Veon Bell was back to full participation today, just 6 days out of suffering that devastating hit on Thanksgiving night. OT (TE) Mike Adams was also a full participant today, which is good news considering the OL depth. He’s coming back from an ankle sprain.

In other injury news LT Kelvin Beachum (knee), G David DeCastro (foot), and NT Steve McLendon (ankle) did not practice today. LB LaMarr Woodley (calf) was limited today.

Keisel Ruled Out And Other Injury News

Coach Tomlin gave his weekly injury updates earlier today, and the news was mixed. Here is a rundown of what he had to say on the injury front. First, Brett Keisel can be considered out this week due to a setback with his plantar fasciitis. Kelvin Beachum won’t practice in the earlier portion of the week due to his right knee sprain. He can be characterized as questionable this week according to coach Tomlin. David DeCastro has a left foot sprain, he will be limited earlier in the week and should be characterized as questionable as well.

Mike Adams has a left ankle sprain and he will practice in some capacity. Le’Veon Bell practiced in a limited capacity yesterday, and they’ll continue to march him back to health. ‘Of course we’ll go through the necessary checkpoints in terms of his concussion’, said Tomlin. “Thus far it’s been very positive with him”.

Steve McLendon with his left ankle sprain will work in a limited capacity, and we’ll see where the week’s work takes him. The same goes for LaMarr Woodley. He worked partially yesterday and he’ll work partially again on Wednesday.

[Audio] Le’Veon Bell: ‘I’m Just Glad To Be OK’

Le’Veon Bell spoke to local media today after practice. Bell looks and sounds much better than you’d expect somebody would after taking such a devastating hit just a few days ago.

Le'Veon Bell Helmet Hit Ravens

“I started feeling better the next day. I kept progressively feeling better.”, Bell said about his recovery. When asked what he thought after seeing a replay of the hit he said, “I’m happy, I’m surprised. It was a bad hit…I mean, I just got lucky. I’m happy nothing serious happened. I’m just glad to be OK.”

What did you think about the touchdown being taken back?

“It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.”

Bell participated on a limited basis in practice today. In terms of how much he could do today he said, “just what I could do”. You can listen here:

Velasco To IR, Two Offensive Linemen Signed

The Steelers announced that they have placed C Fernando Velasco on the Reserved/Injured list. Velasco suffered an achilles injury during the loss to the Ravens on Thanksgiving night. The team also announced that they have signed OT Rashard Butler as well as C Eric Olsen. Lastly, CB DeMarcus Van Dyke has been released to make room for the signings.

Eric Olsen is a 6′ 3″, 305 lb center who was drafted by the Broncos in the 2010 draft. Most recently, the 25 year old played with the New Orleans Saints before being released back in September.

Rashad Butler was drafted out of Miami in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft. Butler is listed as 6’4″, 317 lbs, but he suffers from ulcerative colitis, which caused him problems maintaining weight early in his career. The 30 year old tackle spent 4 years with the Texans, and was recently released by the Browns.

Keisel Probable, Woodley Doubtful For Thursday

Brett Keisel, who has been battling with plantar fasciitis for the past two weeks, is listed as probable for tomorrow night’s game in Baltimore. Keisel has been working his way back and practiced fully yesterday. LaMarr Woodley is listed as doubtful for tomorrow. He was only a limited participant in practice yesterday.

The team has placed CB Curtis Brown on Injured Reserve today. Brown suffered an ACL injury on Sunday, and Coach Tomlin announced yesterday that he was done for the season. To fill the available roster spot, the team has promoted CB Isaiah Green from the practice squad as I expected.

CB Devin Smith has been signed to the available practice squad opening. Smith was brought in by the team during training camp and has been on and off the practice squad this season. You can see more about his comings and goings here: http://thesteelersfans.com/?s=Devin+Smith.
