Shazier Out, Zumwalt Returns, And Other Practice Participation Notes

The news on the injury front was mostly positive in Latrobe today. The Steelers got some guys back who have been out for a while. Mike Mitchell was activated from the PUP list, and LB Jordan Zumwalt returned for the first time since injuring his groin a week ago.

TE Rob Blanchflower also returned to practice today. The rookie tight end had suffered a high ankle sprain last week. I’m surprised he’s back so soon; that’s great news for him. LB Ryan Shazier was held out today for the knee injury he sustained yesterday. Hopefully that “little boo-boo”, as Tomlin put it yesterday, doesn’t keep him out for too long.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey was out again today as he recovers from his concussion. C Maurkice Pouncey and CB Ike Taylor were both given maintenance days by Mike Tomlin. This is very unusual for Ike Taylor.

LB Jarvis Jones was out again today due to a groin injury. NT Steve McLendon was out for the third straight day. No specifics have been released about why McLendon has been out, but one reliable reporter said he had an illness.

Steelers Activate Mike Mitchell From PUP

Safety Mike Mitchell passed his physical and has been activated from the Active/PUP list today. Mitchell will do an AM walk through and is expected to be in full pads for practice this afternoon.

Mitchell started camp on the Active/PUP list with a groin injury he suffered while training. He had been steadily improving, and the announcement of his return was expected any day.

With Mitchell’s return, Robert Golden and Shamarko Thomas will see time on the back up squads, as Mitchell will step in on first team.

Shazier Gets A “Little Boo Boo” And Other Injury Notes

Steelers rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier got a little banged up during a red zone drill today. After a big hit on Le’Veon Bell, Shazier limped off the field where trainers attended to him, and wrapped his right knee in ice. Afterward, Shazier was standing and walking on the sideline, and didn’t go to the lockers.

After practice, Coach Tomlin told reporters that there were no significant injuries today- just bumps and bruises. When asked about Ryan Shazier, Mike Tomlin said he got “a little boo-boo”. Apparently Tomlin isn’t concerned about it.

For the defense, Troy Polamalu, Steve McLendon, Jordan Zumwalt, and Hebron Fangupo were in shorts and didn’t participate. Mike Mitchell of course is still out on the PUP list.

On offense, Ben Roethlisberger and Rob Blanchflower were out for today’s activities. According to Tomlin, there is no update on punter Adam Podlesh.

No New Injuries At Steelers Camp Today

In a surprising turn of events, there are no new groin injuries to report today. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Seriously though, there are no new injuries, and according to Mike Tomlin, the players who have been out are getting closer to returning to action.

“No new injuries today. A lot of guys continue to work themselves back in some form or fashion,” said Tomlin. Coach T. did confirm what was speculated earlier in the week: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has a concussion. No timeline was given for his return.

Heath Miller and Steve McLendon both were given the day off today. Tomlin was forthright about the nature of their absence. “Sometimes I give guys off to see others. We’re just team building here and that’s part of the process,” Tomlin told reporters earlier. Tomlin said that Mike Mitchell had a good workout today, and they’d take a look and see what he looks like tomorrow.

Saturday Practice Participation Report

Steelers practice is underway at St. Vincent, and the highlight of the day will no doubt be the goal line drill. RB LeGarrette Blount, who has been out of practice for the past couple days, has returned to practice today. I can only imagine the violence at the goal line later.

The following players are out today: LB Jordan Zumwalt (groin), CB Shaq Richardson (undisclosed), TE Rob Blanchflower (ankle), TE Heath Miller (maintenance), Darrius Heyward-Bey (head) and NT Steve McLendon (undisclosed).

Dri Archer is back to practice today after missing yesterday with a wrap on his knee. We’ll follow up with injury details from coach Tomlin later.

Justin Brown Returns To Practice Today Despite Broken Nose

Steelers wide receiver Justin Brown says he will return to practice today despite having a broken nose. The second year wide receiver didn’t even realize it was broken until teammates told him so after Thursday’s practice. The injury occurred when safety Shamarko Thomas’ helmet collided with his during a blocked pass.

Brown says that his nose feels fine, and he’ll keep it taped and bandaged for a week. According to Steelers.com correspondent Missi Matthews, Brown has had surgery to repair the break.  Brown doesn’t have any hard feelings towards Thomas. “Everybody is trying to make their mark. It happens. We know what we signed up for.”

TE Eric Waters And WR Darrius Heyward-Bey Injured During Practice

Tight End Eric Waters and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey were both taken to the locker room today during practice. Waters was hurt during drills against outside linebackers. After being attended to by trainers, he was taken to the locker rooms. No formal word yet of course, but initial reports are that he injured his left shoulder.

There were conflicting accounts of Heyward-Bey’s injury, but the consensus seems to be that he took a knee to the head. One reporter said that he believed he was taken off for concussion like symptoms. That was just one reporters speculation. DHB was able to walk to the locker areas. Hopefully, Coach Tomlin’s update will shed a little more light on their situations.

Le’Veon Bell Returns To Practice And Other Participation News

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell has returned to practice today.

Bell missed the last two practices due to what coaches described as “hamstring tightness”.

LB Jordan Zumwalt is still out with a groin injury, and TE Rob Blanchflower of course is out with a high ankle sprain.

TE Michael Palmer isn’t practicing today. TE Matt Spaeth and RB LeGarrette Blount are also sitting out. It wasn’t immediately known why those three were sidelined today.

WR CJ Goodwin has returned to practice today for the first time since injuring his shoulder on the 27th. S Mike Mitchell was doing zig-zag sprints with trainers earlier. It certainly looks like he’ll be making his return soon if he doesn’t have a set back. Stay tuned for more injury updates later today.

Rob Blanchflower

Rob Blanchflower Has Foot In Boot And Other Injury Notes

RB Le’Veon Bell is still recovering from his hamstring “tightness”. He was warming up with the running backs at the beginning of practice, but was not in pads and is not participating today. WR CJ Goodwin is not participating due to his shoulder injury.

LB Jordan Zumwalt is also out due to his groin injury. Ramon Foster has returned from bereavement leave, but Punter Adam Podlesh is still out. His wife is expecting a baby.

I’m sure we’ll get some updates on the injuries from Coach Tomlin later this afternoon. Stay tuned.
