Steelers Vs. Bills Inactives; Ryan Shazier To Play

The team has released their list of “inactives” for the Bills game. The following players are not playing tonight for the Steelers.

S W. Allen, CB D. Smith, CB S. Richardson, FB W. Johnson, LB J. Zumwalt, LS G. Warren, TE M. Spaeth and LB J. Jones.

LB Chris Carter is expected to start in place of injured Jarvis Jones. Ryan Shazier is also expected to play tonight, which is a nice surprise, as he’s been nursing a bruised knee and hasn’t fully practiced since sustaining the injury.

Being inactive tonight really doesn’t bode well for Shaq Richardson and Jordan Zumwalt.

The following players are inactive for the Bills:

K D. Hopkins, CB L. McKelvin, S J. Meeks, LB T. Powell, G C. Williams, TE T. Moeaki, and WR M. Goodwin.

Several Sitting Out For Last Practice At Latrobe

The Steelers are holding their second joint practice with the Buffalo Bills tonight at St. Vincent, and the final practice of training camp. Several players are sitting out the joint practice tonight.

Will Allen, Will Johnson, Matt Spaeth, Jarvis Jones, Jordan Zumwalt, Maurkice Pouncey and Ramon Foster are all sidelined this evening. The two Wills are nursing hamstring strains they suffered in practice yesterday. Spaeth has missed the last couple practices for undisclosed reasons. Jarvis Jones and Jordan Zumwalt have been battling with groin injuries, and Ramon Foster has been out with knee swelling. There’s no information available about why Pouncey is sitting out tonight.

Ryan Shazier is nursing a bruised knee according to Coach Tomlin. He is practicing today, but probably only in a limited capacity as has been the case for the past couple days.

Earlier today, Mike Tomlin characterized Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier as questionable for Saturday night’s game against the Bills. Vince Williams, who has been sidelined with concussion symptoms, is suited up and will participate in some fashion tonight.

Jarvis Jones And Ryan Shazier Questionable For Saturday

During his press conference today, Coach Tomlin labelled linebackers Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier as questionable for Saturday’s game against the Bills at Heinz Field.

“We have some guys who are potentially questionable in terms of their participation in the game against the Bills, but like the preseason opener we’re going to hold out until the 11th hour to make a decision whether they’re available or not,” said Tomlin. “We want to try to give everybody an opportunity to play in this game. Jarvis Jones is nursing a groin and Ryan Shazier is nursing a knee bruise.”

Jarvis Jones has been hampered by a nagging groin injury on and off for the past couple weeks. He participated with the first team defense during last Saturday’s preseason opener, and recorded a sack, but his practice participation has been up and down. Ryan Shazier has only recently returned to practice in a limited capacity since suffering a knee bruise in practice a week and a half ago.

Tomlin went on to mention that a couple players who are recovering from injuries have a chance to play Saturday. “Rob Blanchflower is working his way back, he has worked extensively in the past couple of days and we expect him to participate in the game. Vince Williams has a possibility of playing, and we’ll see what he looks like from the ImPACT test standpoint.”

Blanchflower has been recovering from an ankle sprain he suffered early in training camp. Vince Williams suffered a concussion earlier this week.

Greg Warren Has A Torn Meniscus

Steelers long snapper Greg Warren suffered a leg injury during practice yesterday, an injury which coach Tomlin later described as a potentially serious one.

In his press conference today, Tomlin gave an update on Warren’s injury revealing that the long snapper has a torn meniscus in his knee, and is expected to be out for four weeks. Warren, who will be 33 in October, has already had multiple ACL tears throughout his NFL career. He has been injury free for the past few seasons however, as he’s started at long snapper for the past 64 consecutive games.

While Warren is out, Bryce Davis will handle long snapper duties. Davis has never played in a regular season game, so there is always the possibility that the team could bring in another long snapper at some point if they deem it to be necessary.

Vince Williams May Have A Concussion

Linebacker Vince Williams was carted off the field during practice today. When it happened, most reports indicated that it didn’t look serious, and that Williams was able to walk under his own power.

After practice, coach Mike Tomlin revealed that the injury to Williams was a potential concussion. According to Tomlin, there is no news at this time as he is being evaluated.

Ryan Shazier Expects To Play Saturday Night

Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier told reporters today that he expects to play Saturday night in the Steelers 2nd preseason game. Shazier suffered what coach Tomlin referred to as “just a little boo-boo” to his right knee over a week ago, and hasn’t resumed practicing since.

In an interview this afternoon, fellow linebacker Lawrence Timmons said that Shazier is expected back by the end of the week. While wearing a big band aid of sorts on his knee, Shazier confirmed that he expected to play against the Bills Saturday night, but couldn’t say exactly when he’d return to practice this week.

The Steelers have regular practice today and tomorrow, then host the Buffalo Bills for joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday.

Preseason Week One: Steelers Inactives Versus Giants

The Steelers have announced their inactives for tonight’s matchup against the NY Giants. The list isn’t as long as it could have been based on the status of some of the players on Thursday. Here’s the list:

LB Ryan Shazier (knee)

NT Steve McLendon (concussion)

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion)

TE Michael Palmer (undisclosed)

With McLendon sitting out, Stephon Tuitt should be in the starting lineup tonight at DE. Shazier’s absence could give Sean Spence extended reps at ILB. With Palmer out, TE’s like Eric Waters will get a chance to shine.

It appears that there haven’t been any changes to the Giants inactive list since my post earlier. If there are, I’ll update accordingly. Steelers will be wearing their white road jerseys tonight.

Shazier, Zumwalt, Jarvis Jones And Others Unlikely To Play Saturday

The Steelers have a number of players who are nursing some type of minor injury or another. During coach Tomlin’s press conference this afternoon, he somewhat cryptically addressed the injuries and who would play.

“Everyone who’s healthy will participate in the football game. We have a number of guys who aren’t healthy right now, but we’re going to leave the light on for those guys. We’re going to wait until the 11th hour before making decisions whether to play some of them. But our goal is to get full participation to get those guys off to a good start and show what they’re capable of and move forward with the developmental process of our team.”

The players who are considered questionable for Saturday are:

LB Ryan Shazier (knee boo-boo)
NT Steve McLendon (concussion)
LB Jordan Zumwalt (groin)
LB Jarvis Jones (groin)
TE Rob Blanchflower (ankle)
WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion)

If history is any indicator, the first string players who are active Saturday will likely only see 10-15 snaps. With Shazier out, this will mean Vince Williams will get the start, and we’ll get an extended look at Sean Spence. The 2nd stringers are usually in for somewhere between 20-30 plays depending on the flow of the game, depth at the position, and Tomlin’s mood. LB Howard Jones and DE Josh Mauro are a couple other guys who should see additional playing time against the Giants.

Coach Tomlin added that the team will continue to monitor the players who are recovering from injury. “Some of those guys have participated (in practice) in some form or fashion, partially in some instances,” said Tomlin. “We’ll just continue to monitor some of those guys. Our intention is to play those guys if it’s at all possible, but we’ll wait until the last minute to make those judgments.”

Heyward-Bey Returns To Practice, Shazier Still Out

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has returned to practice today for the first time since sustaining a concussion on July 31st.  LB Ryan Shazier is still sidelined with his knee “boo boo” as Tomlin called it.

OG Ramon Foster and WR Lance Moore are getting maintenance days today. NT Steve McLendon is still out with his concussion and LB Jarvis Jones is out again due to his groin injury. Hopefully Coach Tomlin will shed more light on a couple absences later today.

Report: Steve McLendon Has A Concussion

Steve McLendon has missed the last three practices with no explanation given by the coaching staff. Turns out, according to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, the veteran nose tackle is recovering from a concussion.

McLendon spoke with reporters earlier today about his absence at practice. “I’m OK. It’s Coach Tomlin’s call. It’s up to him. It’s his call,” said McLendon. With McLendon out, Cam Thomas has gotten reps as the first team NT and Stephon Tuitt has gotten lots of looks at first team defensive end.

There has been a wide range of speculations regarding McLendon’s absence. Groins and hamstrings being the most obvious guesses, with “Tomlin’s doghouse” being a distant 3rd. Steve isn’t the only player missing time from a concussion. Darrius Heyward-Bey is still out from his concussion, which he suffered July 31st. According to Heyward-Bey, his symptoms are different from McLendon’s. DHB says this is the 5th concussion of his career.

Concussions effect people differently. One person might recover quickly, while another may need much more time to return to 100%. From here it’s anyone’s guess when either of the two might return.
