Steelers Select CB Shaquille Richardson With The 157th Pick

With the first of their two fifth round picks, the Steelers select Arizona cornerback Shaquille Richardson. Richardson is 6’4″ and weighs 194 lbs. He ran a 4.43 40 yard dash at his pro day, which would have been one of the top few at the combine. He also had a vertical jump of 38.5″, which would have been one of the highest at the combine.

In his 13 games last season, Richardson had 16 pass breakups, 58 tackles, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and one interception. In 2012, he had 15 passes defended. Steelers defensive backs coach Carnell Lake recruited Richardson to UCLA while he was coaching there, so he has a very good idea of what he thinks Richardson is capable of.

Richardson did have an off field issue that may have been a concern for teams. In 2010, he was dismissed from UCLA after a felony arrest involving a stolen purse. The charges were dropped, but Richardson moved on to Arizona. Coach Lake said that Richardson has good size and speed, and is good in coverage. He also reiterated what Coach LeBeau said yesterday: cornerback wasn’t as big a need as it was perceived to be.

Steelers Select WR Martavis Bryant With 4th Round Pick

With the 118th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select former Clemson WR Martavis Bryant. Bryant is just shy of 6’4″ and weighs in at 211 lbs. Bryant played opposite Sammy Watkins in the Tigers offense. In 2013, he totaled 828 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has great top end speed for his size, which allows him to separate himself from defenders. Last year, he had 17 receptions for 20 yards or more.

Bryant wasn’t asked to run a full route tree at Clemson, so he has some developing to do in that regard. While he has drawn criticism for having a high amount of drops, I can tell you it’s overblown. While I did see some tough drops and double catches in the games I watched, he has decent hands and will make the “wow” catches look easy. He’ll need to develop, but he could develop into a legitimate number two receiver.

Wide receivers coach Richard Mann said that Bryant will be a great red zone threat. He also said that he believes Bryant would have been a first round pick had he stayed in school another year. The Steelers reportedly had their eye on him yesterday. The team issued a bio sheet to the media today, and it had him listed as their third round pick.

As we move into the final day of the 2014 NFL Draft, let’s take a look at who’s off the board, and who the Steelers may target with their remaining 6 picks.

I fully expect a run on CB’s early today, and I have to think the Steelers 4th round target is going to be a CB or LB. Here are the corners I see as a good value for the Steelers earlier on today, in no particular order. Here are the prospects who have been selected in the first 3 teams. I’ll update this post throughout the day.

Steelers Draft Speedster RB Dri Archer With 3rd Round Comp Pick

With the 97th pick in the 2014 draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Kent State RB Dri Archer. This pick shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise. Todd Haley has a penchant for small, quick play makers, and Dri Archer is as quick and small as they come. Archer ran an official 4.26 at the combine, and one scout unofficially clocked him in at 4.18. His 10 yard split was also faster than any other back at the combine.

Aside from his ridiculous speed and ability to line up in a variety of spots on the LOS, he’s also a return threat. Archer has a career average of 26.7 yards per KR and four career scores. He’ll line up in the back field, on the edge or in the slot. With any back of his type, durability in the NFL is a concern. At 5′ 7″ and a half, 173 lbs, he’ll need to make guys miss.

Archer was incredibly productive at Kent State in 2012, amassing 1,429 yards from scrimmage. His 2013 numbers were much lower though, mainly due to a nagging ankle injury early in the season. Some analysts have compared Archer to Dexter McCluster and Darren Sproles. What do you think of the pick? Love it, hate it, or indifferent? Let us know in the comments or the forum.

Steelers Select DE Stephon Tuitt With Their 2nd Round Pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected former Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Tuitt with the 46th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. With the lack of depth on the defensive line, this pick was almost a no brainer. The team was said to have wasted no time submitting their pick. Many analysts projected Tuitt to go sooner, and I also thought he would have gone earlier.

Tuitt discovered that he had a Jones fracture in his left foot in February that required surgery. He should be fully recovered from that surgery now. Tuitt’s production in college was impressive for a 3-4 defensive end. He had 11 sacks in 2012, and 7.5 in 2013, including nine tackles for loss. Tuitt is 6-foot-5½, and weighed 299 at his pro day. One of his criticisms was how his performance dipped after gaining weight, but he said he was able to drop the weight after he left school. “I was able to transform my body when I had one-on-one time with professionals,” Tuitt told reporters at Notre Dame’s pro day.

Steelers Select LB Ryan Shazier With Their First Round Pick

With the 15th pick of the first round, the Steelers select former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier. Shazier will likely play the Mack inside linebacker role, and Timmons will man the buck position. It seems that most of Steelers Nation didn’t see this coming. To that I’ll be that guy I hate and say, ‘you should read here more often‘.

Shazier is the linebacker Dick LeBeau has been waiting for. He’s dynamically fast (4.38 40 yd dash), and has a nose for the ball. He’s a high character young man, who’s father has been the Miami Dolphins team chaplin for the past five years. Mike Tomlin was asked about his speed tonight after the selection.  “Fast. Real fast,” was his response. “Sub 4.5 is rare.”

Many people are up in arms about the Steelers not taking cornerback in the first round, but rest assured, they’ll take at least one from the deep crop in the next couple rounds. Many people don’t realize how much of an issue linebacker play was last season. The front seven made the secondary look bad. Shazier should be a difference maker on this team for years to come.

Shazier was named First-team All-American, First-team All-Big Ten, and finished with 144 tackles, seven sacks, 23.5 tackles for a loss, six QB hurries, and four forced fumbles in 2013. Tomlin said he played a lot of football in Ohio, and “They asked him to do a lot of things we envision him doing here in the base as well as in sub-package football.”

From the gist of Tomlin’s interview tonight, Timmons will take on play calling duties at the Buck position, and Shazier will be in the mix with Moats at the Mack position.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing on the web. I’ll leave you with the Shazier Suplex.

Buzz Building Around The Steelers Picking TE Eric Ebron

While I’m not a fan of the pre-draft gossip that gets churned out, I have to pass it along to you. Buzz around the Steelers selecting North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron is building this evening. Draft analyst Tony Pauline and Ian Rapoport are indicating that the Steelers are expressing interest in the tight end.
https://twitter.com/TonyPauline/status/464513605984321536
https://twitter.com/TonyPauline/status/464519740153942016
https://twitter.com/RapSheet/statuses/464528737309294593

While I wouldn’t put too much stock in this, it is interesting. Mike Mayock suggested the plausibility of the Ebron/Steelers match last week. Personally, I don’t think it’s very likely. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Steelers organization is doing a little fishing through the media, in hopes that if he is available, a team who is desperate for him will be an eager trade partner.

Either way, we’ll know shortly.

Final 7 Round Steelers Mock Draft

Just in the nick of time on draft day, here is my 7 round Steelers mock draft. There are two here actually. The first one involves a trade with the Miami Dolphins. These might not be fan candy type mocks, but I think they are very plausible. Feel free to disect them. This is posted in the forum as well: http://thesteelersfans.com/forums/showthread.php?9184-TTF-s-Cloudy-Crystal-Ball-Mock(s)

1 (19) CB Bradley Roby
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN
Ohio State, 4JR, 5112, 194, “4.35 (1.52)”, “31 1/2”, “10 1/4”, “75 1/2”
Roby is not my favorite CB in this class, but I think the team covets him. He’s an aggressive, willing tackler, has perhaps the most experience in zone coverage, and fits their scheme perfectly. I don’t think his recent legal snafu is enough to hurt his stock much in the team’s eyes.

2 LB Scott Crichton
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Oregon State, 4JR, 6027, 273, 4.85 (1.68), 32 3/4, 10 1/8, 79 1/8
The Steelers need depth at OLB, and Crichton is the answer. He’ll need to lose a little weight, which shouldn’t be hard for him to do. He totaled 51.0 tackles for a loss and 22.5 sacks over his career at Oregon State. It’s possible the team could ask him to bulk up and have him play 5 tech, but I think he’ll be much more effective as a pass rusher.

3 (from Dolphins) OG Joel Bitonio
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Nevada, 5SR, 6042, 302, 4.96 (1.78), 33 7/8, 09 5/8, 81
Bitonio is a nimble footed blocker who plays with a mean streak. He finishes his blocks to the end, and plays best in a phone booth. Another good character prospect, Bitonio is known as a leader in the locker room. He played tackle in college, but he’ll have to move inside in the NFL. He’d be a great developmental prospect for Munchak to mold.

3c CB Walt Aikens
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Liberty, 5SR, 6005, 203, 4.49 (1.59), 32 1/4, 09 3/8, 79 1/2
Aikens is a physical CB who could develop into a productive DB here. He’s played a variety of coverage schemes, he’s good in run support, and is an effective special teamer. He’s got experience at safety, so he could transition there potentially if necessary. He has a character flag that effected his college career, but I don’t see it as an issue and think he could develop into a solid contributor.

4 LB Jordan Zumwalt
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

UCLA, 4SR, 6040, 235, 4.68 (1.63), 31 1/4, 08 3/4, 75 1/8
Zumwalt is a high motor, energetic, violent hitting inside linebacker. He’ll blitz or drop into coverage. He’d need to add weight and work his way onto the roster via special teams, but his versatility is a plus in that regard.

5 DE Brent Urban
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Virginia, 5SR, 6065, 295, – ,34 1/4, 09 3/4, 80 3/4
Urban is one of my favorite DE prospects in this class. It’s very possible that he goes earlier, but I think his ankle surgery effects his stock enough to make him last until the 5th. I really think Urban would fit perfectly here. He’d need to develop, but he’s a hard worker who will quietly have an excellent game that few will notice. He really fits the mold of Aaron Smith in my opinion.

5c RB Jerick Mckinnon
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Georgia Southern, 4SR, 5087, 209, 4.38 (1.55), 30 1/4, 08 5/8, 72 5/8
I could see the team taking a more “feature” back if he falls, but the roster is missing a potentially explosive back. He ran 4.38 40 at the combine, and could be dynamite when he finds a lane in a stretch scheme. He played QB for much of his college career, and isn’t a traditional running back. Georgia Southern ran the Triple Option most of the time and he rarely lined up as a HB in the I. His hands are a question mark as he was a passing target only 10 times throughout his college career.

6 WR John Brown
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Pittsburg State, 5SR, 5110, 179, 4.37 (1.56), 30 1/2, 08 1/2, 72 5/8
Brown is small, but he’s dynamic. Smart, good vision, runs good routes and is dangerous in space. Great character guy who was a 3 time team captain. His biggest asset perhaps is his return capabilities. He has 5 career returns for a touchdown (3P,2K)

6c NT Beau Allen
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Wisconsin, 4SR, 6024, 333, -, 32 1/4, 09 3/4, 79 5/8
He only switched to nose last year, but he’s very durable (played every game in his career). He wasn’t invited to the combine, but impressed at his Pro Day. Allen could develop into a solid contributor.

7 WR Quincy Enunwa
SCHOOL, YEAR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, 40-YD (10-YD), ARMS, HANDS, WINGSPAN

Nebraska, 4SR, 6020, 225, 4.46 (1.57), 32 5/8, 09 1/2, 78
To save myself time here, I’m just going to c/p what I wrote about him last month.

The 6’2″, 225 lb wide out ran a 4.45 40 yard dash at the combine. The former captain tied for the most touchdowns scored by a WR in the Big Ten last year with 12. He is a good blocker, a good route runner, and uses his hands well to go after the ball.

Enunwa’s 78″ wingspan helps him extend and bring in the tougher grabs, though, his ball control after the catch can be a little suspect at times. Some analysts have said that he has focus issues and gets easily frustrated when plays don’t go his way. Durability may also be a concern, as he’s had recent hand and hamstring injuries.

Here is my other mock that doesn’t involve a trade scenario.

1 CB Kyle Fuller
2 WR Kelvin Benjamin
3c WR Bruce Ellington
4 LB Jordan Zumwalt
5 C/G/T Wesley Johnson
5c RB Jerick McKinnon
6 DE Jackson Jeffcoat
6c TE Rob Blanchflower
7 LB Shaquil Barrett

Enjoy, and by all means, feel free to pick it apart.

The Steelers Don’t Use The Draft Trade Value Chart

During their pre-draft press conference today, coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert covered a wide range of topics. Most of the focus, as you might expect, was on the draft which begins Thursday night. While most of the answers were par for the course in terms of generality, some did shed light on the thought process behind some of the organization’s choices.

When a reporter asked if the Steelers use the trade value chart when making trades, Colbert revealed that the Steelers do not use the trade value chart. “We don’t use it for our own purposes, we do it to try to see what the other team is thinking. We won’t ever make a trade based on the chart. If we want a player we’ll go and get that player,” said Colbert.

The Steelers GM continued, “We always talk about trading up, when we did it with Troy [Polamalu], it was a 3 and a 6, when we did it with Santonio Holmes], it was a 3 and a 4. People will argue we gave up too much, and I’ll argue- ‘how much is a super bowl worth?’ So, when you want to make that trade, you do it on what you want to do, but you have to know what the other person is thinking when they say, ‘well my chart doesn’t allow this’, so we have to know what they’re thinking, and they’ll throw it on us, but if we want to do it, we’ll do it.”

Colbert said he believes that there will be less trading in the first round. Though, regardless of other teams moving around, the Steelers are going to sit there at 15 and wait for the 14 other teams to do what they’re going to do. “You never trade away until you know what you’re trading away from,” said Colbert. He added that he believes quarterbacks will be the one position that teams will trade around for.
