NFL Practice Squads Have Increased To Ten- Eligibility Rules Change

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed to expand practice squads for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The current rules will be reinstated in 2016 if an extension to the new agreement is not made.

Starting at noon on August 31st, teams will be allowed to add up to 10 players to their practice squads, up from 8 in previous years. Here’s a breakdown of the NFL practice squad eligibility rules under the current system from the collective bargaining agreement.

  • To be eligible, a player can not have been on the practice squad for more than 2 seasons.
    • A player may qualify for a third practice squad season if their team maintains no less than 53 players on the active/inactive list at all times.
  • Serving on the practice squad for three or more regular season or post season games constitutes a practice squad season.
  • A player cannot have an accrued NFL season. An accrued season is comprised of having been on the active list during 9 or more games in a season.

The expanded practice squads add a couple new eligibility rules. First, what constitutes a practice squad season has changed. Instead of the 3 game requirement, it’s now 6. Secondly, the additional 2 players who can be added to the practice squad, may have 2 accrued seasons. This is great news obviously, as it allows so many more players to be added to a practice squad who were not previously eligible.

Practice squad players earn a minimum of $6,300 a week in 2014. That’s $107,100 for a player on the practice squad for the full 17 weeks.
Don’t forget- for a player to be placed on a practice squad, he must first clear waivers.

Chargers Sign CB Brandon Flowers To One Year Deal

The Chargers have signed cornerback Brandon Flowers to a one year deal. The specific terms of the deal haven’t been made publicly available, but the deal is reportedly worth up to $5 Mil. Early reports of the financial details indicate that the contract included a guaranteed base salary of $1.5 Mil, a guaranteed signing bonus of $1.5 Mil, and up to $2 Mil in potential incentives.

The Steelers were reportedly “interested” in Flowers, but the report never really passed the sniff test to me. Sure, the Steelers were going to keep their eye on the situation, but certainly they weren’t going to be one of the cornerback’s active suitors. Flowers had a substantial drop in his production last year. Many referenced Ike Taylor in the Flowers discussion, but based on his play last year, William Gay is the closer comparison.

With just under $6.5 Mil in cap space, the Steelers have ample room to shop for value free agents. Spending up to $5 Mil for a zone nickel corner (which Flowers looks destined to be) is not on the Steelers fiduciary to do list this summer.

Bears To Release Former Steelers Punter Drew Butler

The Chicago Bears are set to cut punter Drew Butler, according to the Chicago Tribune. The cut could come as soon as today according to a team source. Butler was signed to a futures contract in December, but the Bears drafted former Miami punter Pat O’Donnell in the 6th round of this year’s draft. The team was carrying 3 punters on their roster, so someone had to go.

Butler was All-American, an All-Southeastern Conference selection and a Ray Guy Award winner at the University of Georgia. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Steelers after the 2012 draft. He kicked a total of 77 punts for the Steelers that year, 6 of which were touchbacks, and 26 were inside the 20.

Butler, the son of former Bears kicker Kevin Butler, was waived by the Steelers last September. He won the position battle in camp last year, beating out veteran Brian Moorman, but the team signed former Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko in the end.

NFL Hopes To Extend The Draft

The NFL is hoping to extend the draft from 3 days to 4 days sometime in the future. In an interview with NFL reporter Jeff Darlington, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell revealed the league’s goal of stretching the draft coverage.

“We’re looking at a lot of options with respect to the draft to create even more excitement around the draft,” Goodell said in the interview. It begs the question- How much draft day coverage would most people want to watch? I can’t imagine waiting an extra day for the last round or two would be considered “must see tv” for the average fan.

Goodell also said he was unsure if the draft would return to April, or if it would remain in May. Ironically, the Rockettes show that supposedly caused the scheduling issue at Radio City Music Hall was postponed.

49ers Have No Intention Of Trading RB LaMichael James

San Fransisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke told the San Francisco Chronicle today that the team has no intention of trading LaMichael James.

How is this relevant to the Steelers? Some people have suggested that the team should trade with the 49ers on draft day. The notion stemmed from an article published last week…on the Sacramento Bee. Coincidentally, the author is the same writer who, in my opinion, flat out made up how much Mike Wallace was demanding from the Steelers when he was a free agent, but I digress.

According to the article, a source said that the team was shopping the running back for a possible trade. In February, when asked about the possibility of trading James, Baalke said, “No discussions. LaMichael is a 49er. He’ll continue to be a 49er.”

Rumors of a possible trade escalated when James did not attend voluntary workouts earlier this week. When questioned about his absence, the 49ers GM said his understanding is that LaMichael James is working out in Texas due to the recent birth of his child. He reiterated that there were no plans to trade the running back.
