Mike Tomlin

Steve McLendon Was The Only Injury Of Note Tonight

Coach Tomlin addressed the media tonight after the loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Aside from some bumps and bruises, and a shoulder injury to Steve McLendon, there were no major injuries according to Tomlin.

“A bunch of bumps and bruises. Steve McLendon had a shoulder and wasn’t able to return. I’ll have an update for you at the appropriate time. I don’t have anything other than that,” said Tomlin. Lawrence Timmons looked to be in a lot of pain after one play late in the game, and when asked about him, Tomlin replied, “He went back into the game.” I guess he was one of the bumped and bruised.

Antonio Brown Fined For Kicking Browns Punter’s Face

Antonio Brown has been fined for kicking Punter Spencer Lanning’s face during last Sunday’s victory over the Browns. According to Ian Rapoport, the fine is $8,200. I can’t imagine that there’s anyone out there that didn’t see a fine coming for the hurdle that wasn’t.

The NFL lists the minimum fine for first offenses of kicking/striking/kneeing other players at $8,268, so I imagine that Ian’s number is an approximation.

Breaking Down Cortez Allen’s Contract Extension

The Steelers signed CB Cortez Allen to a contract extension last Saturday. The new deal was for five years, and totaled $26.031 Mil. He was set to make $1.431 Mil this year, so after factoring that in, you can see that the deal includes $24.6 Mil in new money over the extended 4 years.

Here is the breakdown of his contract by year. $6.75 Mil is guaranteed.
Year, Base Salary, Prorated Bonus, Roster Bonus, Cap Hit, Dead Money

2014, “$650,000″,”$1,447,875″,”$0″,”$2,097,875”, “$6,847,875”

2015, “$2,631,000″,”$1,350,000″,”$3,000,000″,”$6,981,000”, “$5,400,000”

2016, “$4,400,000″,”$1,350,000″,”$0″,”$5,750,000”, “$4,050,000”

2017, “$4,300,000″,”$1,350,000″,”$0″,”$5,650,000”, “$2,700,000”

2018, “$4,300,000″,”$1,350,000″,”$0″,”$5,650,000”, “$1,350,000”
As you can see, Allen’s contract includes a $3 Mil roster bonus in 2015, which will be due on the 5th day of the league year if he is on the roster. Currently, Allen is the 17th highest paid corner back in the league behind Alterraun Verner.

Monday Steelers Practice Injury Report

The list of Steelers who were limited in practice today is long. Here is the official list released by the Steelers-

Limited:

RB Dri Archer (ankle, knee), RB Le’Veon Bell (not injury related), WR Antonio Brown (not injury related), WR Martavis Bryant (shoulder), DE Brett Keisel (not injury related), CB Brice McCain (groin), DT Steve McLendon (stinger), TE Heath Miller (not injury related), WR Lance Moore (groin), S Troy Polamalu (not injury related), QB Ben Roethlisberger (not injury related), S Shamarko Thomas (achilles, ankle), C Cody Wallace (finger), WR Markus Wheaton (not injury related).

Coach Tomlin talked about the injuries today during his press conference. “We have some injuries to deal with. Dri Archer has an ankle sprain, which will make him questionable. Shamarko Thomas has an ankle-to-Achilles sprain of some kind that’s going to make him questionable. All of the guys who were out vs. the Browns – Lance Moore, Brice McCain, Martavis Bryant – will probably remain questionable. We’ll see where these guys are when we begin the preparation process tomorrow, but the guys who weren’t available against the Browns, the best you could list them as is questionable.”

The Steelers face the Ravens Thursday night at M & T stadium.

Shamarko Thomas And Dri Archer Injured During Browns Game

After the win against the Browns today, Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media and gave updates on some injuries. According to Tomlin, Shamarko Thomas suffered an achilles injury of some type. “A couple of injuries: Shamarko Thomas wasn’t able to come back into the game, he’s got an Achilles injury of some kind. He’ll be evaluated.”

Dri Archer was the other player Tomlin mentioned. Archer was hurt late in the game and didn’t return. “Dri Archer had an ankle injury. He’ll likely be evaluated as well. He was unable to continue,” said Tomlin.

The Steelers have a short week as they play the Ravens in Baltimore on Thursday.

Cortez Allen contract

Steelers Sign Cortez Allen To Contract Extension

On the eve of the home opener, the Steelers have signed Cortez Allen to a contract extension. The 25 year old cornerback is now under contract through 2018. According to Jason LaCanfora, the deal is worth $26 Mil.

https://twitter.com/JasonLaCanfora/status/508407797806297088

It’s no secret that the Steelers don’t negotiate new contracts during the season, and while they’ve maintained that, they certainly pushed it to the wire tonight. I’ll have a breakdown of his new deal and the cap implications posted soon. His cap number this year (the last year of his rookie deal) was just over $1.5 Mil before the extension.

Band-aid

The Steelers have released their end of week injury report and, with the exception of Lance Moore, things look pretty good. Here’s the injury report:

OUT: CB Brice McCain (groin), WR Lance Moore (groin)

DOUBTFUL: WR Martavis Bryant (shoulder)

QUESTIONABLE: OL Cody Wallace (finger)

PROBABLE: Matt Spaeth (hammstring), Sean Spence (knee), Greg Warren (knee)

With Lance Moore out, expect to see Justin Brown get some snaps in the slot.

Did Not Practice: WR Martavis Bryant (shoulder), CB Brice McCain (groin), WR Lance Moore (groin), OL Cody Wallace (finger)

Full: TE Matt Spaeth (hamstring), LB Sean Spence (knee), LS Greg Warren (knee)

The biggest concern on the DNP list is Lance Moore. With Moore out, expect to see Justin Brown getting time in the slot. Brown played slot at Penn State before he transferred to Oklahoma State, where he was moved outside.
