Preseason Week 2 Depth Chart Released

This week’s Steelers depth chart is out. Possibly the most notable change this week is Le’veon Bell being listed as co-starter with Isaac Redman. Brian Moorman is also listed as co-starter next to Drew Butler for punting duties. Other changes of note this week include  moving Beachum to the right, Shamarko Thomas at backup with Cromartie-Smith, L. Jones moving up ahead of John Parker Wilson, and Gilreath excluded from special teams this week.

Don’t put much stock into these early preseason depth charts. They’re often used as motivators and change quickly.

Plaxico Burress Placed on IR, WR Tyler Shaw Signed

The Steelers have officially placed Plaxico Burress on Injured Reserve today. Burress, who turned 36 yesterday, underwent surgery on his right shoulder to repair a torn rotator cuff.

The team has signed WR Tyler Shaw to add depth and fill the opening on the roster. Shaw went undrafted out of Northwest Missouri State this spring. He’s 6’0, 182 lbs and clocked a 40 low time of 4.37. He spent this summer with the Cardinals before being cut last week. Aside from impressing with his speed on the football field in college, he was also an accomplished hurdler on the track team.

Steelers Training Camp 8/12 Injury Report

Today’s injury report is a mixed bag. Starting with the good news, Terry Hawthorne dressed and participated in practice today. Hawthorne, the team’s 5th round pick, missed OTA’s and all of camp so far due to knee surgery. Nick Williams returned to practice, and Le’Veon Bell was also back today as expected.

Justin Cheadle (OL) was injured during practice. He was said to have suffered what looked like a right knee injury, and reportedly appeared to be in a lot of pain. He was carted away after trainers attended to him on the field.

Steve McLendon was given the day off for personal reasons according to Coach Tomlin. It was rumored to have been to be with his wife who was in labor.

Plaxico Burress had surgery today. It is his 36 birthday. Tomlin did not have a timetable for Burress’s or Spaeth’s recovery.

Mike Tomlin Post-Game Press Conference Notes

Mike Tomlin addressed the media after the loss to the Giants tonight, and here are summarized key points~

Coach Tomlin started by saying it was not an acceptable performance on a lot of levels. ‘Some really good efforts. Some positive, some negative…a lot to look at and learn from. We did some good things, particularly in the run game. Winning the line of scrimmage and running the ball consistently and efficiently. Just too many mistakes, penalties getting us behind the chains offensively. We gave them 30 yards in free real estate in the 2 minute drive prior to the half- that’s self inflicted wounds- and then obviously we have some poor judgment in the return game. From a kicking standpoint we got a punt blocked. We’ve got some young guys maybe in some instances being  overly aggressive and trying to impress. We’ll learn form this and move forward. It needs to improve and our focus will be putting together a winning performance for next week.’

‘On the injury front, we got through it relatively clean. ‘Stenvenson Sylvestor has an ankle. I don’t know the severity of it. I did see him walking in there, but we’ll see how he is.’ ‘Other guys have normal bumps and bruises.’ ‘It was my decision not to play Bell. He worked in a limited capacity late last week. Watched him in practice Friday and didn’t see enough to feel comfortable for him to start his career in less than ideal circumstances from a health standpoint. He’ll be back on the field the next day we practice.’

What was the story of the game for you?

‘Just the errors. Steelers defeating Steelers.’ Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it can be characterized as part of August football, but I’m not buying that…’

Anything you can do other than get healthy in regards to Tight Ends?

Just that and continue to work with the men that we’re working with. I’m not going to discount the guys that are working…we got quality work from David Paulson and others tonight. We’ve got guys down at the position we need to get back and we will when they’re healthy. In the meantime, we’ll focus on the ones that are working…that’s just football in the NFL.’

Any update on Spaeth?

‘I know he got a surgery preformed, as far as a timeline, I haven’t been privy to that information, but I’ll get an update within the next 24 hours…’

On draft picks taking time to develop historically. Will they’ll be pressed into action sooner this year?

‘They won’t be pressed. If they’re ready and capable to help, we’ll utilize them. If they’re not we won’t…’

On Jarvis Jones and Wheaton

‘Saw some positive things. We’re going to comb through it. We’re going to continue to challenge those guys to continue to improve… Nice start for those guys, but they need to continue to grow.’

Mike Tomlin Confirms Matt Spaeth Had Surgery

In the post-game press conference, Coach Tomlin was asked about Matt Spaeth’s status. In reply, Mike Tomlin said he had surgery preformed, but did not have an update at this time. This confirms the early reports that Spaeth would need surgery when he injured his foot in practice last week. This contradicts Gerry Dulac’s report that Spaeth simply had a linsfranc sprain.

Coach Tomlin said he would have an update on Spaeth tomorrow.

[Rumor] Matt Spaeth May Need Lisfranc Surgery

Reports are starting to surface, none confirmed yet, that Matt Spaeth may need Lisfranc surgery. If this is true, Spaeth will likely be out the majority, if not all of the season. The Lisfranc joint complex is a combination of bones and ligaments, which provide stability to the joint which lies in the middle of the foot. The severity of Lisfranc injuries varies greatly. Santonio Holmes for example suffered a Lisfranc injury last September and is still rehabilitating from it. His was the most severe kind.

The depth at the Tight End position is an area of concern on this team’s roster. If Spaeth does require surgery, this could be troubling news.

Sources Say Plaxico Burress Has Torn Rotator Cuff

Though no official announcement has been made by the team, Adam Schefter reports that Plaxico Burress has a torn rotator cuff.

Mike Garafalo also reported that a torn rotator cuff was what Plaxico suffered yesterday. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Plaxico-Burress-season-career-in-jeopardy-after-injury-080813

Garafalo says that sources told him surgery was likely in the Wide Receiver’s future. If these reports are true, this is not only the end of his chances of playing this season, but most likely the end of his career.

The injury happened yesterday while Burress was attempting to catch a pass that was being defended by Steed and Cromartie-Smith. He was said to have fallen on his right arm and needed to be carted from the practice field. Plaxico was no lock to make the roster, but he was showing signs of being the red zone threat many hoped he would be. This injury puts receivers like Justin Brown, David Gilreath, Kashif Moore, Derek Moye, and Reggie Dunn in greater contention for the last available Receiver spot.
