Rooney is the 5th person to receive the award. The previous winners were Peter Ueberroth, Billie Jean King, Paul Tagliabue, and Jerry Reinsdorf. “This is really something special,” Rooney said while accepting the award. His son John read some of his father’s statement saying, “The greatest team ever was the 1970’s Steelers.” The Chief appointed Dan Rooney team president in 1975, a position he would maintain for nearly three decades.
Aside from his many years of operating the greatest team in sports, he was deeply involved in core NFL decision making such as expansion, realignment, commissioner hires, rules, new stadiums and other important league matters. Dan Rooney co-chaired the committee that selected Roger Goodell in 2006.
