He's from a small school and he's slow, there are better prospects at CB they will have a chance to draft.

Listen I am not gonna sit here and try and say the Steelers are players in FA cause we all know they aren't. However we are getting better at it,
Yeah he is but he can play, my worry is the small school thing but not his speed. From the little I have watched he has very good reaction skills, watch his read the QB he sees things a lot quicker then the other CB's I have watched and that can make up for the lack of top notch speed. I am not saying this is our only answer at CB but I would be very happy if this kid is on our team next year.

This draft is loaded with defensive prospects and we need help defensively on all three levels. Especially in the secondary. It will be interesting to see if we use free agency to shore up the D-line depth. With Charles Johnson and a few other D-line players available, I'd like for that to happen which would allow Colbert to think less (because he can barely walk and chew bubble gum at the same time) and focus in on the secondary and finding another linebacker to replace Jarvis Jones (because Jones is a bust)

NY STEELERFAN, Today at 5:48 AM

yesterday I did some hopping around to see how some other boards viewed the CB situation. I was surprised to see a thread on Mackensie Alexander.

Some weeks ago I had seen posts saying he was overrated etc and several usually on target fans said they were not interested.

I stumbled across an article about the records of those well known draft guru's that do that Huddle Report each year. Quite a few had a very good record.

One guy, Nate Davis USA had 27 in rd1 with 10 matched to the team. Not bad, so out of curiosity I took a look to see if he also did any early mocks this year and found one. His pick was
    25. Pittsburgh Steelers - Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson: Pittsburgh ranked 30th in pass defense last season, and free agency will likely further weaken their already shaky depth at cornerback. Alexander would fill a need and provide toughness that's always appreciated in the Steel City.

    26. Seattle Seahawks - Jack Conklin, T, Michigan State: Seattle struggled with its blocking for much of 2015 and probably can't afford to re-sign free agent LT Russell Okung. Conklin needs some polish, but few are better at making the big uglies shine than assistant coach Tom Cable.

    27. Green Bay Packers - Noah Spence, DE, Eastern Kentucky: Substance abuse issues led to his demise at Ohio State, but Spence swears he's grown up now. There is no question about his ability, and he might be worth the roll of the dice for Green Bay's so-so defense.

    28. Kansas City Chiefs - Andrew Billings, DL, Baylor: The Chiefs need to restock their D-line, and Billings has the talent and versatility to be a nice fit.

    29. Arizona Cardinals - Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech: With Tyrann Mathieu suffering a late-season knee injury, and Jerraud Powers set to test the market, the Cards will likely be in the market for secondary help. And you know Virginia Tech alumBruce Arians has a soft spot for Hokies.

    30. Carolina Panthers - Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson: Carolina is imposing up the middle but needs to be in the market to replace aging DEs Charles Johnson and Jared Allen.

What was interesting was most fans did not like the pick but some liked just about every one of the next 4 or 5 taken after Mac. That is good and shows that there is a lot of value at that spot in this draft. Just get the right one. Billings seemed to be the favorite.

Both Todd McShay ESPN and Dane Brugler CBS had 28 in rd1 land 10 team matches. Of course those are their final mocks for the Huddle Report shortly before the draft. But I thought it might be interesting to see how they are thinking now.

Holy ------! I'll go with Toledo today. There are a gazillion fits there.

Anyway I just googled this and it is McShay's post combine mock Holy ______! WTF

    25. Pittsburgh Steelers

    Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson
Tight end is a need, and we have a first-round grade on Hunter Henry, but you have to think the Steelers are going to spend this pick on a defender. Quick-twitched, instinctive and capable versus the run, Alexander is a really good all-around player. But he finished college with zero interceptions and lacks ideal length; he measured 5-foot-10 with arms less than 31½ inches at the combine. Houston CB William Jackson III, who had an impressive combine workout and has really underrated tape, is another possibility here.

The fact McShay brings up Williams Jackson III is interesting, as his combine workout certainly helped his case to be a legitimate first round draft pick; however, he doesn't have the pedigree of Alexander coming out of one of the best NCAA programs in the country in Clemson.

He's from Clemson? I hadn't noticed. And I liked Green who is projected rd4-5 better.

Is it possible this is a conspiracy?:smiley1:

I hope McShay is wrong. But I like the idea of adding Rahim Moore if the price is right.

Glad someone is looking out for Steeler's interests.

I used to always link to that site and rave about it. Then something really stupid happened.

A poster on another site was pasting articles from the depot completely. The guy that runs it complained. Then he banned the site from printing any of his stuff. This made no sense to me as only one person was not linking to his site and he went off an penalized the entire site. I thought that was stupid and have not gone back or linked any of their articles since. Too bad it really is a informative site.

---Mac, he did mention that Moore was also a FS and that might require a change for Mitchell. But for the right price and in the event of FA losses it makes sense.

    Check out Phil Savage's thoughts:

    #1 Harlan Miller/SE Louisiana (SOUTH) 6000/182 30 7/8” Arm | 8 3/8” Hand
Size/Outside: This small school gem of a prospect only needs to gain about 10lbs to become a legitimate pro corner. He has height, quick feet and can play man-to-man. As a senior at SELA, he recorded 49 total tackles, 10 pass breakups and 4 interceptions.
    1-on-1 Pass Coverage: Wins: 10 Losses: 7
Reese’s Senior Bowl Pieces: Harlan was named 2nd team FCS All-American by the AP and STATS for the 2015 season. He was selected as the Alabama Power Practice Award winner for the defensive backs by a panel of NFL scouts for his work during RSB week.

Also was listing to Movin The Chains and a Steeler fan called in to talk about our secondary and Pat Kirwin mentioned Miller as a guy we should be real interested in and that the Steelers like small school guys. Said 3rd - 4th round on this kid, I am all over that in the 3rd.

as the steelers have always said, every safety here can play either role at safety and it's not as defined as some teams are. i think as we play more cover two if thats what the plan is it would also make more sense with two FS type players to be back there as long as they tackle well too.

Cheap fit doesn't mean a good fit . Moore got benched early in the season by Houston, not interested.

I still think it would be a decent option. That Houston team was a dumpster fire the first half of the year... It's really can't believe they turned it around well enough to win the division (even if it's the AFC south lol). There could be plenty of reason for his poor play. Besides just because he was bad in one spot, doesn't mean he will be bad in another.

I'm sure their going to look at Moore on the tape and see what the problem was in Houston. Sure are a lot of options this year in free agency.

Why Moore did make some poor plays and took some poor angles , he is still better than any Safety that is on the Steelers roster .

 Yeah right Moore isn't a better safety than Mitchell, who had a good season for the Steelers.

OK he has not lived up to the hype as of yet .. So at this point Mitchell has played better , but he projects higher and is as good as any other Safety that we have..

While we're on these CB's/S a lot of top sites and analysts are out with their post combine mocks. They are pretty much in line with earlier ideas. This one by Zierlein was interesting. Notice several of the players taken after his pick and I bet some are saying dammit Cinci.

    1. 24
      [IMG]
      DARRON LEE
      OLB
      OHIO ST.

Lee's combine could dictate an earlier draft slotting than here, but the Bengals would have a hard time letting him pass by if he were still on the board.
    2. PICK NO.
      25
      [IMG]
      KEANU NEAL
      SS
      FLORIDA

Neal is a grown man who posted a solid 40 time and tremendous explosion numbers. Every once in a while you see safeties and say "He's a Steeler." Neal fits that mold.
    3. PICK NO.
      26
      [IMG]
      TAYLOR DECKER
      OT
      OHIO ST.

Decker has some holes in his pass protection, which would worry me if I were the Seahawks, but he's also a dominant run blocker with enough length to get his hands on speed rushers around the corner.
    4. PICK NO.
      27
      [IMG]
      HUNTER HENRY
      TE
      ARKANSAS

Henry is a combination tight end with outstanding hands and the ability to help out as an in-line blocker or as go-to target on third downs. There are very few true tight ends in this class, and Green Bay grabs the top tight end.
    5. PICK NO.
      28
      [IMG]
      CODY WHITEHAIR
      OG
      KANSAS ST.

While the Chiefs could use a tackle, Whitehair might be too good a talent to pass up for the Chiefs, who could boast one of the top, young interior lines in football within a year or two.
    6. PICK NO.
      29
      [IMG]
      WILLIAM JACKSON III
      CB
      HOUSTON

Let's see. Size (check). Speed (check). Ball skills (check). Arizona needs immediate cover help and Jackson's combine has him on the radar for everyone now. [Yeah, here also and on most Steeler boards. But there is some concern over his general physicality.]
This is the link to the nfl.com article. There are 4 analysts mocks and all are interesting.

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/mock-drafts

Jeremiah's pick is a bit of a shocker!

TBH I really don't care much for these mocks. I could care less who anyone other than the Steelers are picking. But they do give some inclinations as to how the draft is shaping up. But like last year Shazier, he was far from a household name in mocks leading up to the draft. I didn't even know who he was since I don't get to watch much college football wow, what a pleasant surprise.

But if anyone likes this sort of thing a simple Google search has post combine mocks from usa, cbs, si and a couple of lesser known sites.

To bad truthful, we really can't predict anything until after the first wave of free agency. Teams will fill needs that way and then re-prioritize their draft needs. We all pretty much agree that we need to upgrade the secondary. And we pretty much know that our team doesn't do big things in general in free agency.

The teams that are ahead of us in the draft who use free agency on corner backs and safeties will move those needs down the priority list once they sign the top free agents at those positions. THEN we can see just what is what as far as draft needs.
