You’re sounding more like Art by the day.

I saw a stat that the Patriots in the last 3 weeks have won as many playoff games as the Steelers in the last 15 years. You actually think we are contending? Really??

You act like the negativity is unwarranted. You are wrong. Why were no other teams going after Mike McCarthy? He’s a washed up has been that’s why. Omar is his buddy and Art should be in a nursing home.

I just don’t understand running it back with a team that clearly can’t compete for a championship.

I like the McCarthy hire for one simple reason; contrary to what many are saying it's not business as usual with this hire.
    1. Offensive minded HC
    2. Proven track record as opposed to an unknown from the ranks of the NFL
    3. Older, experienced coach that's has developed assistants with some success
Rooney went outside of SOP on this hire. But the question is why? Two very good reasons:
    • No clear #1 QB on the roster; would you trust a defensive HC to find and develop the next one? And before you say Cowher did I will tell you that is not how it went initially. Cowher and Roethlisberger were at odds early on because of the way he played.
    • Steelers lacking staff. No apparent DC or OC; they will need a bright mind to focus on getting the most out of the defense in the next couple years. Makes sense that Mccarthy can mentor the guy while letting him do his thing with the eventual idea if this DC works out he takes over at the end of McCarthy's contract.
I won't say that this was all Rooney's thinking. It could very well have been DanII (who reportedly sat in on all the interviews) and Kahn who were the thinkers on it. ArtII only needed to give the thumbs up (which is something he seems good at).

    Now, tell me I'm wrong.

Completely agree. McCarthy is an average coach at best IMO. His claim to fame is the SB against us in 2011. He had a prime Rodgers. Maybe he helped develop Rodgers I do not know. I do NOT like the hire.

I gave a C but it's too early to grade anything until we see the results from the hire.

There were no grade A's among the new hires. We are done with the Tomlin problem which lasted nine years of no playoff wins. We unloaded a grade C head coach and upgraded to a B
    .
McCarty was not my #1 pick, but he was a top 3 candidate in my book. He is a good OC with plenty of experience working with and developing hall of fame QB's and a solid head coach.

I wish he was 5 years younger as being a head coach is a grind.

I have an open mind and I'm hoping for the best. But the hire feels average to me. Safe. Not aggressive. Average= C. Hope it proves out to be an A.

Fun Fact: Mike Tomlin never drafted a WR in the 1st round. Mike McCarthy drafted Cee Dee Lamb in the 1st round his first year in Dallas.

For those of us that have had it with Khan trying to bring in a Free Agent WR to take over the WR #2 position for the last 2 years, this may be a step in the right direction.

I firmly believe that the Steelers are going to attempt another run with Aaron Rodgers at QB. Assuming that's true, hiring McCarthy makes sense. The 2025 Steelers showed some legitimate promise at times. If they can address the secondary issues, and add some NFL calibur WRs to the team, the Steelers will again compete for a playoff spot.

And unfortunately, that's the issue. Do you want a team that is a contender for a playoff spot? Or do you want to build a team that is a contender for a Super Bowl spot? Those are entirely different things.

I voted this hire a D. I see the Steelers hovering around 10 wins and a wild card birth next season. The Steelers aren't building anything, just looking for ways to keep treading water.

At least they didn’t listen to Tomlin, he recommended Flores.

It depends on the long term plan. If he was hired to be the next 20 year Steelers HC, then an F. If he is being viewed more as an interim coach, then c+ to B area.

Here’s the thing. A lot of comments about how Rooney lives in the past and do it the Steelers way regardless.

Well they Steelers way was hiring young defensive coaches and instead hired an experienced offensive coach.

    Can’t have it both ways.

None of you have any idea how the hiring is until he is midway through the season. I will keep my mind open until then.

I would take Rodgers back, but only if the offense gets some help. I look at it like this......what are Rodger's pitfalls from 2025? Fragility, he is in his 40s. Mobility, he is in his 40s and has spent a long time being smashed by defensive players trying to take his head off. The run game was not there against the good teams. The offensive line was terrible early on, but did improve. The play calling seemed poor all too often. And finally, you don't have a WR threat when you have exactly 1 guy that is going to stretch the field.

So, lets say he comes back. Get legitimate help at WR. That alone will help fix a lot of problems. It makes the run better, it opens up your play book more and it takes pressure off of the QB. It won't fix everything, but if the help is good enough, it can help some in almost all areas. Work with Mount Washington to not submarine his way into defenders. Trade Jonnu and get some cap back, as well as take a guy that underperformed for high pay. Work on that O line. Stop throwing short of the sticks on 3rd and long. Stop throwing 40 yard passes on 3rd and short. Improve those pieces around Rodgers and his experience can really make a difference.

However, if you are not going to get him the help on offense that he needs (or any other QB for that matter), you are just ensuring bad QB play.
