The Steelers have restructed Woodley's deal which will cut about 6.5 mil off the salary cap, it also notes that if/when we restructure Timmon's contract we could save anywhere from 10-12 mil on our salary cap bringing it down anywhere from 13-15 mil over. This would make it less players we'd have to cut. Just thought you should know if you werent aware.

I mean, since we are so close to winning it all now, might as well restructure and hope we win another ring. This will make the future more difficult.

It`s always amazing to me how we can keep so much talent, and stay within the rules.
Seems to have improved since Omar Kuhn, got here, although, I`m not sure exactly how long ago that was.
I`m sure it also helps to have players that are willing to re-structure, for the betterment of the team.
I know Hines has said he is willing, although, I`m not sure how much of a chunk that can take out of the overall picture.
I would be willing to bet there is some magic we can work with Ben`s huge contract, too...
Glad to hear we are well on our way to getting under the cap, when we were projected about 30 million over, from most of what I had read...
Hampton, might lighten the load a bit too, if they don`t bring him back...
I remember when it seemed the Rooney`s wouldn`t (over)pay for ANYONE, no matter how talented.
For the last 15/20 years, I am happy, and amazed, at what they have been willing to pay, to get, and keep, talent on this team...
Great Job Steelers! Keep it Rollin!!!
    P.S. ...
I miss Delzjick(sp?).... He was the best at these matters!

yeah I really don't get the math of the whole cap thing. Does a "restructuring" just mean we get some cap relief this year but pay for it down the road? It can't just disappear entirely.

Diehard, I don`t entirely get the math, either...
I know we do "pay for it down the road"... But, I think with some contracts, like the ones we extend again, it eventually just gets spread out over more years...
So the Players still get their money, we just don`t wind up owing them huge chunks against the cap, in the particular year, that we originally said they wouls get it, when they signed the contract.
Then you get into stuff like "signing bonuses", which the player gets immedieately, and we cant "restructure...
Like i said, I miss Del.
He was awesome, at breaking all our contracts down, year by year, cap hit, by cap hit...

Thx for the info Bleedsteel. I guess we need to appoint a new salary cap czar who can decipher all the numbers. I have a feeling cap issues will be a fact of life from now on. Anyone want to volunteer?

Is it a case where the cap always goes up. So if we restructure and push a lot of a guys money to a later date, then we'll be owing him when the cap is higher?

    Good question, CokeOven.
I think that is the basis of what the front office is doing.
I know it(the cap) is tied to the CBA that was signed last offseason, but I don`t know the details.
I actually think it turned out to be LESS than our front office expected...
From here on out, I really don`t know if it is guaranteed to go up.
SOMEONE on here, has to have a head for this stuff, or at least a link, where the rest of us could educate ourselves?

Cap will go up when the new TV money kicks in so all teams will get relief at the point but the minimum will go up as well. Moves like this will be expected around the league as teams try to get under for next year knowing that in the future all the money they restructured for down the road will be able to fit in easier than if the cap stayed at what is is now.

Wow, that's great. You don't see too many contracts restructured after one year, and we're going for two.

It looks like the article says the money they save this year will be spread out over the remaining years. So it won't bite us in the ass hard, but it might nibble a bit. Still a great deal for us, especially if the salaray cap goes up over the next couple of years. If we're only over by $12-13 million after Woodley and Timmons, we've cut our problem in half without even getting to the predictable cuts. Salary cuts or more for Ward, Farrior, Hampton... maybe we can get creative with another vet like Ike Taylor or Troy. We might not be in such bad shape after all.

Still, I won't hold out hope for Carl Nicks.

You lost me on the Carl Nicks reference, but what I`m wondering, is...
Has Ben "re-structured", since his ten year/100 million contract?
I seem to remember it being talked about, just dunno if it has been done yet...
    If not....
Just seems, to me, there HAS to be some big money in there, to spread out...
And like you said, we`ve already got halfway to the 30 million dollar difference, ...

HIS, HAS to have 5 million or so that could be moved around, that HE wouldn`t notice, much, as far as his "quality of life", right?

Nicks is a FA this year and the top guard in the league. With our money issues, we still might not get a single FA of any kind, let alone a $50 million one.

Not positive, but I think Ben's has already been restructured once.

He restructured last offseason to help get under the cap, but I don't recall exactly how much it involved. Don't quote me, but I believe it just deferred what he was due to future roster bonuses.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't we hoping for a Ben restructuring this year too? I seem to remember reading it somewhere and thinking, great - he's pissed about BA being let go and now we're coming to him asking for a favor involving his contract. What incredibly bad timing!

    Thanks guys.
Don`t know who Nicks is, or who the top guard in the league, plays for,
    But...
I was thinking that Ben had restructured.
Wasn`t sure, just remembered it being talked about.
I doubt we would ask again, if he just did it last off-season.
    That was just me, speculating...
If we needed money... that`s the biggest contract on the team, and if he DIDn`t already give some back, even though he didn`t really give it back, because he still gets it eventually, that`s a big dollar amount to play with.
And all of a sudden, with the Woodley restructuring, and possible vets not coming back,...
Seemed like the biggest piggybank, to take a couple coins out of..
    ;)
    Again, thanks for the clarification.

Brings you down to earth about what's important to these guys. If any highly paid QB really wanted to win (Manning, Brees, Brady, Ben, whoever), then they could just say, "$100 million? Wow! How about $70 million, and you get me a kickass offensive line?"

That'd add a couple Super Bowls to his resume, and some years to his game (more money on the back end). For Ben's case in particular, he might want to think about it to add years to his life. Can anyone else envision him dying around age 62?

I guess $30 million is too much to give up, even if you're getting $70 million. But maybe they could take a 10% cut. Something. It could be contingent on where the money goes: "I'll give you $10 million back off my entire contract if all of it goes to the OL" ...actually, Ben would probably spend it on receivers. So never mind.

Dammit, just wasted a longwinded post about the value of free agents, by hitting the wrong button, when I went to post it...
    Point being...
Flozell helped us a bunch, on the line, when he wasn`t holding.
Other than that, Ryan Clark, and James Farrior, are the only free agents, I could think of, off the top of my head, in recent history, to really help us, and neither one was a lineman...
I also, still have vivid memories of Duce Staley standing on the sidelines, doing nothing, after I was so happy we got him in the offseason...
I say, Keep , and groom the talent we get in the draft, like we always do...
It`s led to more superbowls than any other team has, so far...
    ;)
