Heard today on Sirius NFL that Willie Colon was asked by the team to take a pay cut. His answer was no.

Now I'm no expert on the business side of football, but teams don't ask players to take a pay cut for the heck of it. They ask them with the intention of cutting them if the player refuses, at least normally. I will be surprised if Colon isn't cut at some point in the future

You're right. That was probably the WRONG answer on Willie's part.

Maybe yes, maybe no. I'm sure when the Stellers asked him to take a pay cut, his first question had to be "How much?" So Willie and his agent 'know' what the Steelers are willing to pay. They may have figured they could do just as well as free-agents. And if they're wrong, they can see talk to the Steelers again later. Not that I think Willie Colon will be hotly pursued free agent, but he is an experienced OL and there are lots of teams under the cap.

I guess it depended on how much of a pay cut they ask him to take. I'm not sure of his injury status but I don't believe they can cut him until he is fully healed. Cutting him may hurt the cap situation more then it will help. A better option if possible may be to reach an injury settlement and let him walk. I can't blame the guy for not wanting to take a pay cut.

Exactly...the OP said that it was a pay cut not a restructure...which are 2 different things. I mean yes technically you are taking a cut up front but are making the money back later (with a restructure) a flat out pay cut is just not making the money your loosing back at all.

Big deal, guy hasn't played in 2 years. It's not like the O-line could get any worse if he leaves. This is really not even news worth...what would be news is he played and didn't get called for holding--and as a bonus actually blocked somebody!

Since we don't know what the Steelers offered, it's tough to say whether Colon made the right decision or not. However, his market value is extremely low. He has zero chance of getting a multi-year deal with guaranteed money. If he's really lucky, someone will offer him a 1 year deal at a salary that's higher than the vet minimum, but minimal up front cash. Teams will be wary of a guy who hasn't really played in 2 seasons.

i know but the only way to take a pay cut is if they waive him sign a new cheaper contract right? so i just figured they asked him to restructure like they are doing with everyone

No offence, but 210 people so far have entered into this thread (including you) so it must be news. As far as I'm concerned, when one of our players is potentially going to be cut, it's news, no matter how good or bad that player is/has been. For hardcore fans like me who can't get enough, this is absolutely newsworthy.

A cut colon might result in a colostomy bag...

But seriously, Willie was never great when healthy so being injured the past 2 seasons has made him expendable. So long Willie Colon!

He's our third best OL, behind Pouncey and Gilbert, but with his injury history it's not unreasonable for the team to ask for a refund.

Yeah, the answer in his best interest would have been, "Oh totally, the only thing we have to decide is how much to cut! Omar, I'll be home in an hour. Call me, bro!"

It sucks that we paid him big money last year and he sat on the bench. I agree that we might look to restructure his deal at some point. And he might be willing to do it. If he was on the radio, it probably wasn't an official negotiation, so he has almost no choice but to give a stance. But the team is not in a position to say "give us your money or you're cut." We don't have the players. The line is barely improving as it is, and we are counting on Colon's return in order to actually have something. Without him, Gilbert can fill his shoes, but who fills Gilbert's? We're right back where we started, IF Gilbert is as good as Colon. I like Gilbert, and he might have that potential, and he's certainly more versitile, but there's no guarantee he'll make that huge step in year two that we're all hoping he will.

    With Colon:

    Gilbert - Rookie - Pouncey - Foster/Legursky - Colon ..... or
    Rookie - Gilbert - Pouncey - Foster/Legursky - Colon

    Without Colon:

    ? - Rookie - Pouncey - Foster/Legursky - Gilbert ..... or
    Gilbert - ? - Pouncey - Foster/Legursky - Rookie

Yes, we will likely draft someone this year who can help in the future, and possibly right now. There will likely be growing pains no matter who it is. The guard positions might not be much better this year, even with a premium draft pick spent. Starks is done, at least with us. To me those first two options above are pretty good compared to where we've been, and will be really good if the rookie turns out strong. The other two are a total mess. Even if we land a stud rookie, our line will not be better than last year, and possibly worse. Too many question marks. We lose Colon, and we are headed backwards. With him, we are still steadily improving. This is not a time do backslide. We need to extend Ben's career and get a freakin' running game.

as a guard maybe as a a tackle i preferred starks by far
to me gilbert is right tackle only and they will draft a left tackle and a guard in the first two rounds , or pick a free agent, we have lot of money to trim
