This may be reading a lot into things, but does anyone else see a connection between an offense out of sync and a defense missing assignments, and the "butchering" of a team-oriented pre-game script? Other teams managed to organize themselves and include coaching staff and even owners. Our team doesn't communicate among themselves about what to do before the game, and it doesn't look like they do much communicating about what to do during the game, either.

Is this a symptom of an organizational structure out of sync with a good team-oriented approach? As fans we have complained for years that the team comes out "unprepared"; maybe they simply have not communicated with one another what they are supposed to be doing. This implies that the coaching staff has put into place an organizational structure that is not working. I have often wondered about Tomlin's frequent response to questions about his players when he says "I have not spoken to him about that". A team only has 53 guys - he's not running a thousand employee corporation! Couldn't he talk to his players about stuff?

    This team drives me crazy.

I'd have to look at the All 22 to make a guess if mistakes looked like communication, individual execution or playcall etc.

Tomlin usually does well at deflecting media questions, so I don't take his answers as an insight into how things are run.

That said, every team has a culture, and there are certain things we see on the field - the missed assignments on defense for example - that could well be symptomatic of that.

I'm more tempted to think the offense has specific things to fix, and defense also has things to fix, but these are largely different issues in the main.

It seems to be a problem, I would like Art II to be more hands on than he already might be.

Lot of things this old timer isn't liking what he continually sees.

I've watched the game twice and the all 22 once - at least as much of it as I could watch without game pass screwing up. I didn't see obvious communication issues. I saw:
    1. A number of poorly executed blocks, mainly by Hubbard, AV, Finney and James that impacted drives. They tried to block the right guys, but whiffed.
    2. A QB who (still) consistently turns his nose at the easy check down on 3rd and short, preferring to go for the low percentage splash play. This flat out killed drives that could have led to the winning field goal while the game was tied at 17.
    3. Missed tackles and bad angles taken by our LBs and safeties in run defense (like none of them have ever seen a cutback before Sunday).
    4. In general, on the bigger gains in the run game our defensive linemen failed to force the double team, and Bear's offensive linemen were free to engage linebackers on the second level.

The most important ones to me were 1 and 2 because, despite the steaming pile of poo left on the field in the 1st half, our offense was in position throughout the 2nd half to win the game in regulation. We had drive killling decisions by Ben and key missed blocks consistently kill our comeback.

I will also give Chicago some big props for their execution in the run game. It was quite good. When you watch the execution of the blocking assignments on the all 22, the design of the blocking was impressive. They almost always had their blockers engaging our defenders at angles that favored the blockers. Kudos.

In my mind, the number one thing we need to correct is for Ben to buy into the concept of taking what the defense is giving him. Someone will almost always be open, but it just may not be the guy he really, really wants to throw it to. A very easy to see example is the strip sack that killed a 1st half drive. We had a 3 WR set to the right, and they blitzed a LB and S from that area. This is Football 101. You attack the zone vacated by the defenders. On that play James flashed open between the zone defenders right at the first down marker, before the pass rush got to Ben. However, all Ben was doing was staring down AB who was running a slow-developing corner route to the left with double coverage. Rookie-dumb. I'd say that it's too late to correct this in Ben, but we've seen him correct that for stretches before. He was better at doing that earlier in Haley's tenure, but he seems to be regressing to BA bombs-away ball.

The Offense is out of sync the last 3 games. This is the biggest concern to me. I want to see a scaled down O and Ben not going for the homerun over and over. Dink and dunk, take the underneath stuff. We have the players to do this. This lies at the feet of Ben. Defenses have sniffed out Bell's running style. Time to get Conner more snaps. Going to be a long season if this Offense stays pedestrian.

The Defense has played well the first two games and if for not letting Chicago run it down their throats I feel this game could have been won. Like Elvis said, kudos to their run offense. It happens.

    On to the hated crows...

    This.

Fundementals and execution are essential. Not having either decreases ones chances of winning. Not having both equates to a loss.

Absolutely right in your last paragraph.......for some asinine reason he just seems determined to throw passes he has no business throwing whether the guy is open or not.....way too many forced throws. Makes no sense......
