Well people just need to be realistic about Howard, they didnt take Allar in the 3rd round to back up Howard who they took in the 6th round last year. If they seriously thought Howard was going to be a starter they just wouldnt spend a 3rd round pick this year on a QB.

I don't really know how the team feels about Howard. I think they are going to give him a legitimate look, but Allar is the more physically gifted, so they will obviously want to see how quickly he can learn and develop.

Well I suppose if you have 3 picks in the third round you can afford to take a HUGE gamble on a guy that has a strong arm and nothing else. But we have Howard who is going to save the team. Good thing we have Rodgers coming back

I think this is mostly correct. The issue is going to be that we now have 2QBs that have zero NFL snaps. There is no point of reference to be realistic about other than draft position. Howard has the better college career hands down. Doesn't make him the better NFL QB, just another measuring stick.

Fans will choose a side because that's what people do. We rank everything. Especially in sports.

If Tomlin was coaching 40-7 ass beating in the WC game would be a guarantee.

It’s so funny there are people still in denial about the level of control a 20 year coach had here :lolol:

I saw the same choke at the end of big games and not just OSU, Notre Dame, Oregon and Michigan. Not only did he lose but came up short in the biggest drives. Versus Notre Dame and Oregon his decision making and ball placement cost State the games. He has the size and arm strength but upstairs I don’t know ih he possesses the it factor.

When Beck went off the board with the 1st pick in the 3rd round the Steelers had to make their move. (Beck, Allar, and Simpson were your 2nd tier QBs)

If both Beck and Allar are on the board at 76, I believe the Steelers would have passed on a QB at 76. Beck and Allar were the QBs that back in 2025 everyone was talking about when they said the 2026 QB class was going to be a great one.

What does it say about our current QBs if we draft another one from this draft today?

Has any of those receivers Allar had at Penn State made it to the NFL?

The Penn State offense has been a joke. He has had several OC's and offenses to learn, and literally almost no wide receivers that can play a lick in four years of college.

Also, some of the bad plays you talk about aren't on him. I know you may not be close to the situation there, but a few of those plays are breakdowns by others on the team. He's nowhere near a perfect prospect, but he got zero help at Penn State from the coaching staff or his receivers. His offensive line has also been terrible for long stretches, even with Ioane at guard. The other players on the offensive line have been very inconsistent and downright awful at times.

No weapons and poor blocking in front of a quarterback is a recipe for disaster.

All I know is that Allar had 61 TD passes and 13 interceptions over his career and a ton of physical skills playing in the best conference in college football. I want to see what he can do with real coaching and some talent around him.

When is a QB ready, years ago you put the QB in and he learned or he sank. QB's went in, sometimes they got pulled but in todays world of a shattered confidence we don't do that anymore. When is a QB ready?

I have not been impressed the few times I watched Allar play. But even I can see the physical tools and abilities. I do not know how else to describe it, but sometimes he looks like he just found out he was playing QB that morning.

Smarter people than me are saying that comes from mechanical issues and needing better offensive coaching.

Well....I have many not nice things to say about MM, but I have always admitted that he can coach QB mechanics. I do not think that is really debatable.

Maybe Allar cleans up his mechanics and you have a big strong kid with an absolute thunderbolt of an arm. It is hard to not support the thinking behind the selection.

And...for me...it bumps up my opinion of MM a measurable amount. He is putting his money where his mouth is with the Allar pick.

IF Allar had "produced" big numbers, he'd have been a top 5 pick and not on our radar.

I am BIG on picking offensive players in bad systems or with crappy coaches (think Steelers OC the past 7 or 8 years), because the talent can be there, but production is that of a 5th or 6th round pick.

    It's called VALUE.

Remeber all the Air Raid QBs with MEGA-EYE-POPPING stats that actually sucked in the pros, over and over again?

Stats are a SMALL part of the picture.

Allar has flaws, but was a 5 star prospect out of high school for a reason. The reason would could draft him in round 3, the offense at Penn State has been garbage for most of my lifetime. Some of it is talent, most of it was schemes/coaching/playcalling (think conservative crap way too often, which won't win big games).

I wanted them to take a Beck/Allar type round 3 or 4 and maybe another dart throw if one of those upside/low floor QBs are there in round 7 (Arkansas or NDSU QB comes to mind...or Aguilar).

We need full competition. We know Rudolph isn't an NFL starter. Howard, Allar and QB-to-be-picked, competing in July/August and feel much better about a good QB shaking loose, with potentil to be a top 10 NFL starter by 2027, than I do NOT picking a QB until round 7 and having Howard, Rudolph and low-floor/potential dart throw in round 7 (or UDFA).

Like someone eles posted, UNTIL we have our next franchise type QB, we HAVE to pick a QB each year, preferably before round 4 or 5 (i.e. someone with some potential and NFL-translatable passing/progression skills).

    Yes, very.

His footwork is a mess. Fix that and a lot of his inaccuracies will get cleaned up. He has other things to work on, his decision making is probably the most challenging flaw to fix but most of his issues are mechanical, thats right up McCarthys alley.

Dont know if they can make a QB out of him but man if they do, his traits can make him special.

you know what it says. It says we have no starting QB at this point. they already know Rodgers is coming back so I guess he's that guy one more time. Good times

This thread should be re-visited after Allar or Howard actually throw a pass in the NFL.
